About Alfreda McDonald

Let me introduce myself, I am Alfreda McDonald but I prefer Eva my husband Robby, and I live in California on the coast between Monterey and Santa Cruz. In 2014 we decided to invest in our beautiful vacation home in a extraordinary location. We have enjoyed renting our lovely Hawaiian home for many years, and would be most delighted to have you and your family enjoy our wonderful House of Love by the Sea.

Alfreda McDonald purchased this house in 2004

Why Alfreda McDonald chose Keaau

I fell in love with the home in 2004 the location is unbelievably beautiful and the ocean can be seen from all rooms on the property. Our home is easy to get to from the Hilo International Airport and I can get our supplies and get home in 20 minutes after a tiring flight. The home is our retirement home which we are enjoying renting to travelers like yourself. Aloha.

What makes this house unique

This is beautiful home besides a place to sleep eat and clean up it has many amenities that can't be beat. Sitting out back in the morning having tea and watching the sun rise, or feeling the cool breeze in the afternoon heat. Oceanfront is very special few homes have this distinction, ocean views, the sound, and taste of salt on your lips. I love to take a night time swim in the salt pool or a morning swim to wake me up:) It's the ideal home for the family vacation staying in a safe, neighborhood setting close to shopping, restaurants and all kinds of recreation.

Beautiful large home!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay here! The view out the back are breathtaking, great sunrises!! We used this as our house to visit the volcano. Although the house is about 30minutes from most things as others have mentioned, you really won't find somewhere that is reasonably close to all the different parts of the park. It was about an hour to the visitor Centre, but only 30 minutes to the start of the hike/bike ride where you can watch the lava reach the sea. We also visited the hot pool which was great swimming and only 30 minutes away. Hilo wasn't far either. So really suited is. The Jodie was very big with heaps of room for everyone. We had no issues with water. Alfreda mentioned they had just filled tank and to call if we had issues, but we had no problems with 9 of us showering etc. thanks for having us!!!

Wonderful stay

  • 4 of 5

Eight of us, including 2 young children, stayed for a week at Alfreda's wonderful home. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the shower pressure in the huge master shower was low (other bathrooms were fine) and we had a hard time cooling down the kids' room. So, we just moved her plentiful fans around! Alfreda also warned us to use the water jug from the utility room for cooking water. Because of the cliffs, crashing waves, and pool, the children were under strict orders not to go outside without an adult. They loved the pool and joined us for the fabulous sunrises in the morning. The house was clean and the beds were comfy. The well-equipped kitchen was big enough for all of us to work in. This house is much bigger than you would think and gave us the ability to spread out. This home is about 30 minutes from anything, but we just planned ahead. I love the neighborhood and enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of tourist resorts. We really loved our stay and hope to do it again sometime! If you come, make sure you go to the Botanical Gardens and have the lunch/tour at the Hawaiian Vanilla Company.

Incredible house by the ocean

  • 5 of 5

We brought along a lot of family and friends to join us for our wedding in Hilo. We rented this house for a week, and 8 of us stayed there. While we were there, we hosted a few evenings of having the rest of our friends over to socialize.

The house was very clean and beautiful when we first got there. As we settled in, we also found it comfortable and homey. There was plenty of space to sit and talk, both inside and outside. We could just walk out the back door and enjoy the view of the ocean and the waves crashing on the rocks.

The house was well equipped with everything we would need in the kitchen, and a reasonable wifi setup. We also borrowed one of the coolers in the garage for our big outing to Kona one day. All in all, except for food and a few minor supplies, we had everything we needed.

We loved this place, and the memory of it will be a big part of the memories of our wedding. Thank you so much.

Peaceful

  • 4 of 5

What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the ocean. We saw turtles and dolphins from the back yard. The pool was very nice and there was plenty of room for 8 people, without feeling crowded.

Beautiful location and the views were incredible the home was quite run down.

  • 2 of 5

The views were incredible the location was great. The home was quite run down the doors and windows did not lock other than with wood in the jams, the screens on the doors were all pushed out, many of the mechanisms to operate the windows were rusted out and did not work I did wonder about our safety we were told to lock up at night and when we leave unable to securely do that. We did wash all the dishes prior to using we found a glass in the cupboard with what looked like blood on it. Also the pool was not clean outside furniture was torn and weathered we were given one bath towel and wash cloth each, along with one beach towel each, no extra linens at all. We did spend most of our time outside and like I stated the view was incredible.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Most important, the doors, windows, and sliding glass doors do lock. The wooden dowels are recommended by grandpa and the State of HI. One of our guest took the time to make plastic dowels, so he could leave the doors open at night to hear the sound of the ocean. The guest was honest in her experience. I told her I was sorry and let her know that I will be working on the maintenance and housekeeping in April. I was very sorry I lost her as a guest, but she replied back to me and said, "I didn't lose her as a guest," as a matter of fact she wanted to come back, and she just booked my house! I starting working on the issues the day her review was posted. I have all the hardware for the windows and I am ready to go! April , we are finished installing cranks the salt eaten away. This guest and family has been back several times since this review:) I have ongoing projects in our home to make it comfortable, clean, and safe for our guest. Mahalo

awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Howard and Kelly. This is our second time staying here and we again had a wonderful time. We spent a tremendous amount of time on the awesome back patio! We walked on the lava for hours and the waves crashing are as intimidating as they are awe inspiring! We are always on the lookout for whales and thrilled when we see them. The house is spacious and clean, which is great, nobody is tripping over anybody else! Not to far to drive for snorkeling, or to Hilo proper. There is a good farmers market, and on wed and sat some great souvenir shops across the street from there. And of course Uncle Roberts on Wednesdays, my guys absolute favorite for his shrimp scampi! We have recommended this house to several friends for their vacation and yes we are planning a trip back next Jan. We left cold and rain and flew into 70-80 degree weather and sunshine! Hoping our place back home doesn't float away while swimming in the pool and listening to the waves and whales while you sleep(I know not that worried huh?) Looking forward to Jan 2017!!
