About Marlene Ross

The house was designed and built (literally) by my late husband who taught structural engineering at the University of Michigan. The space is a joy and a delight to be in, comfortable and inviting.

Why Marlene Ross chose Northern Michigan

For several summers my family rented a house down the beach. We fell in love with the area as a perfect get away for parents, grandparents, kids and dogs. We were lucky to find this piece of land/sand with no rocks-on beach or in water-just sand. The house was completed about 11 years ago.

What makes this house unique

As I appreciate it when my dog is welcome on my travels, the house welcomes (well behaved) dogs, has a doggy door and a small fenced in area off front porch. The house is maintained in excellent condition-smoke free and shoe free.

Beautiful, relaxing, memorable

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Marlene’s house was a joy for our multigeneration family of 6. The situation on Lake Michigan was perfect - in the middle of the Sturgeon Bay shoreline. We spent 3 or 4 evenings watching beautiful sunsets. We cooked dinner all nights but one in the well applianced kitchen. The lake and water temperate were welcoming. Initially we had thought we would plan a few day trips but decided instead that we didn’t want to leave the beach and house. We were there during the time of the full moon. One very lovely, soft-air night I went outside about 4:30 am and spent time laying in Marlene’s hammock on the sand dune staring at the sky. It was a memorable vacation. I’m sure we’ll return. Did I mention Marlene’s house is host to many pieces of original art? - has lots of windows that open and comfortable beds? Also, Marlene was very easy to work with. I would definitely recommend this property.

Epic spot!

The property was clean and beautiful. The location was incredible with gorgeous views and a lovely soft sandy beach. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone who wanted a tranquil spot to get away from electronics and the demands of the modern world.

Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I went end of June for our anniversary. Knowing Michigan, the water is still cold at this time but we enjoyed Marlene's kayaks, walking the beach, and our dogs loved running and going for a swim. There's also a nice fenced portion by the house to use as a dog run. The water is shallow, crystal clear, and it seems you can walk out a ways before it gets deeper. I love how the top floor of the house is the living room/kitchen/dining as it has a spectacular view of the lake and distant lighthouses. Although we came at a time when the midge flies were still swarming, Marlene was very accommodating with us, and because the view is so great from the inside, it was still worth the stay! Especially when we saw the Northern Lights!

The location is great as it's only a half hour drive to Mackinaw City and the bridge, as well as a half hour in the other direction to Harbor Springs and Petoskey. It's a secluded location but there are beach houses on either side so you don't feel totally alone. We love Legg's Inn for a meal or drink in Cross Village, the gas station for snacks and ice cream, as well as taking the the Tunnel of Trees scenic drive to Good Hart for the crepe wagon, shops, and General Store (15 min away). Didn't care for the Cross Village Three Pines art studio (they will keep an eagle eye on you at anything you look at- makes for an uncomfortable experience and a great way to drive sales away). But we made sure we weren't gone too long as we wanted to enjoy the house, the views, and the access to the private beach. The house is very clean and there's a small TV for DVDs and a radio to listen to, as well as plenty of books and games to keep your attention. They have a washer/dryer too for laundry. The only detractor is that they didn't have a microwave, but they do have a toaster oven instead.

One note, to no fault of the owner, because this is more remote, if you have Verizon cell service, you will get absolutely no signal in this area unless you drive about 15 min closer to one of the larger towns. So be prepared to be totally cut off, but it does make for a peaceful vacation and we love the area. (Have heard ATT gets a signal though)

We would definitely come back to Marlene's beach house. The transaction and communication before, during, and after was great. She was very accommodating and we love how her beautiful house is also pet-friendly.

Dream Home!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week at this beautiful beach house so much that we actually got homesick for it once we were home! Truly a “dream house.” It was so peaceful and the views were amazing. I wish I could cook every day in a kitchen with those views! The house is very well built with interesting architectural details and beautiful art to look at throughout. It was clean and well stocked. We really enjoyed the kayaks the last couple of days (it was too windy the first part of the week). The only disappointment was how tiny the beach area was due to the high water levels. We enjoyed lots of walks along the shore, looking at the beautiful houses and scenery. We got good reception with our phones (AT&T). The location is perfect – far enough away from everything to really feel like you’re away from it all, yet not too far of a drive from Petoskey, Mackinaw, and many other destinations.

We booked next year on the way home!

  • 5 of 5

We have spent our family's summer vacation in Cross Village for the last 8 years. We tried 6 other cottages right on the lake before we found Marlene's. All others had something missing; a few of the cottages had issues, or the beach was rocky or cobbled and difficult to navigate without care. Marlene's cottage has the best of both worlds, a comfortable, well-equipped cottage and a marvelous beach.

Those who live in Michigan know that the lake has been low for many years and is finally returning to an appropriate level. While the beach isn't wide enough to play football it was plenty wide for beach chairs, umbrellas, bags, sand toys, digging and playing fetch with the dogs. The beach above & BELOW the water is that hard to find sugar sand that is so great to play in. The water this year was G-R-E-A-T!

We relish the seclusion. It's one of our favorite features. Our two adult children and son-in-law go with us and we all turn on our email to "out of office" since we are getting away from work rather than going to a remote location to work. Though cell/voice coverage is sometimes spotty for all but AT&T users, texts always seem to get through and there is a house phone that people can call in on.

Marlene is also great to work with. She answers email and questions in a timely manner and is happy to help when needed. Most of the reviews are right on. If you are looking for a place to relax and get away from it all, this is the perfect spot.

Peaceful & relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Overall, this is a nice property. It is well equipped and relatively clean on the interior. The beds are comfortable and it was great having a washer and dryer to use. Puppy loved the water and its sandy, stone-free bottom. And surprisingly, the water was warmer than I expected after reading reports about the late ice melt on Lake Michigan prior to our arrival.

However, it is quite secluded, especially if you are unable to get cell phone service, which we were unable to do. This made it difficult for adult children to stay in touch with their world, which led to frustration on their part. And although we knew the home did not have internet prior to booking, we didn't realize how far we would have to travel to find a connection so that we could connect with our real lives occasionally. This probably wouldn't be a problem for visitors with younger children, but it didn't work well for our working adults.

The outside of the home is in need of a little tender-loving care. A thorough power-washing would remove cobwebs and all of the dead little insects that tend to accumulate in webs at every window. And the driveway and overall yard of the property is in need of maintenance. Also, the beach has eroded quite a bit since the on-line photos of the property have been posted, making it necessary to put chairs in the grass area if you would just like to enjoy a sunset without getting wet.

The owner provided kayaks and a paddle board for our use, which was very much appreciated. And it was nice having a grill to use while we were there too. And of course we had a meal or two at the nearby Legs Inn and visited the Good Hart General Store just a few miles down the road.

Going to Petoskey or Mackinac City is relatively easy, or to the Pellston airport to pick up guests, as it's probably only about a half hour drive from the home.

My actual rating of this rental would probably be three and a half stars, due solely on the condition of the outside of the building and the seclusion factor. But it's in a beautiful part of Michigan, has a nice sandy lake bottom and is very relaxing and provides all of the every day utensils one needs to live.
