About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps up to 6)

The Cabin at Green Mountain is located three miles south of Nemo, a tiny mountain town set in the picturesque valley of Boxelder Creek. Central to Deadwood, Sturgis, Rapid City and Hill City, our convenient location let’s you visit top attractions while providing a special haven of rest and relaxation.

The cabin is nestled under tall pines on the edge of a strikingly beautiful and secluded Black Hills meadow. The view from the front porch across a sweep of pasture, ringed by steep rock ridges and dense pine and spruce, is punctuated be a sheer white limestone cliff rising in the distance. This private little valley is graced by Jim Creek. The diverse flora and quietly tumbling creek attract a wide variety of Black Hills animals and birds.

Enjoy relaxing on the front porch, hiking in the woods, trout fishing in the creeks, cross-country skiing, birding, golf courses, restaurants and all major Black Hills attractions.

The brilliantly redesigned 1910 building features a lofted cathedral ceiling and a large field-stone, gas fireplace. Three sleeping areas accommodate up to six people. The main level has a full bath, a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, a comfortable living room, and a bedroom with bunk beds and a double bed. Upstairs, the open loft holds a double fold out futon. This area also can be used as a second living room and has a special parquet card table perfect for games, puzzles or projects. An upstairs master bedroom has a queen bed and a private full bath.

About The Owner

Your hosts, Mark and Mary Zimmerman are both professional artists, avid students of the history, geology, flora and fauna of the Black Hills. Their house, barn, and their Green Ink Gallery and Studios are located nearby on this same 30 acre original homestead which is surrounded by the Black Hills National Forest.

What makes this cabin unique

Undeniably one of the most beautiful properties in the Black Hills, this serene little valley is a special haven, a place of solace, where it is possible to truly rest, relax, and deeply recharge. This is a place where it is entirely natural to make special memories that will last a lifetime.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is without a doubt the coziest cabin we've ever stayed in! Mary and her lovely dog Donner came to check in on us upon arrival, and both she and her husband were extremely warm and accommodating to us. The views were stunning, and they always left the lights on for us when we got back in the evenings. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend in the hills!

Seeking Peace...

  • 5 of 5

We are a retired couple who has just turned 60. In the past year, we each lost our mom. One very suddenly, the other after a very long illness. We were looking for a place to get away, where we could be quiet and peaceful...but still explore and learn about a part of the country that is very different from our own. The Cabin at Green Mountain turned out to be the perfect retreat. The setting is serene. The view is of a beautiful pasture with two horses grazing, and often several deer. The cabin is rustic and cozy, and as previous reviewers have stated, it is spotlessly clean and well-stocked. But for us, the thing that made it different was the touch of the artist-owners. Their artwork is on display throughout the cabin. Mark's abstracts, and Mary's block prints and drawings add character that is missing from other rentals. Along with the choice of furniture, fabrics, rugs, bed linens...these are the things that made the cabin special for us. We spent each day exploring the Black Hills and its surrounding parks and monuments, and each evening cooking a great meal and sitting by the fire. Mark was a great host, and while we didn't meet Mary, I know she is a special person as well. We feel quite fortunate to have experienced this cabin. Thank you.

Wonderful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Mary and Mark are wonderful hosts! We spent the new year's weekend at the cabin and it is beautiful. The lights were on and welcoming and the cabin had the fire going for our arrival. The cabin is very charming and cozy. The last morning of our stay after speaking with Mary and Mark we discovered that the artwork in the cabin is created by them and their art studio is in the barn. It did snow quite a bit the last evening that made our trek out quite interesting but Mary and Mark were helpful and we did make it to the highway :)

Rapid City is close enough to be convenient but far enough away that you get the full experience of the Black Hills. If you enjoy Deadwood, it is a nice drive as well and a fun place to be for New Year's eve.

If you are tied to your technology you may struggle a bit here. We have Verizon and cell service was nonexistent. Bring DVDs as you will not be able to stream videos and there are only 2 TV channels. But what a way to bond! Watch DVDs with your loved ones and play games! If you are there in the winter, bring warm clothes and go explore. I am sure it would be a completely different experience in the warmer months but the winter months seem to be very nice.

"Peaceful, easy feeling"

  • 4 of 5

We were initially a little leery about staying so far from Rapid City, but after just one day, fell in love with "The Cabin on the Green". The setting is very idyllic nestled among trees with a fantastic view of green pastures and the Eastern horizon from our porch chairs. No traffic noise, no helicopters overhead, no loud neighbors or barking dogs. And did I mention, no light pollution so one can study the stars at night.

The cabin was comfortably furnished and nicely decorated in the manner befitting a cabin in the woods. We loved having a no fuss, no muss fireplace and the little space heater for the bathroom. My son has arthritis and is from Hawaii so is sensitive to the cold. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots and pans. I wish there were some coffee filters there for the 1st morning as that is not something that I thought to bring/buy.

The major thing that my son (age 40) and his cousin missed was having cell phone service. He said that he was glad that we chose this place and that everything was perfect except for the absence of cell phone service. The wi-fi connection was apparently not the greatest, but he said that was a good thing because he didn't have to do any work. He was the only one that watched TV and would have preferred

a sports channel to Fox.

The owners went out of their way to make us feel welcome and accommodated our every need. They were kind enough to "leave the light on for us" every night.

Although the driving distances are a little far, the scenery is beautiful and there is virtually NO TRAFFIC (yay!!). In 5 days we saw Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Jewel Cave, the Mammoth site, Deadwood for dinner (?# 10 Society Club), the wildlife loop (LOTS of wildlife), the Needles Highway, a whole day right in Rapid City (Journey museum and the geology museum). Be sure to eat at Wobbly Bobby and the Firehouse Grill. Only one disappointing restaurant in Hill City, but that was because we had already eaten at the Bun and Burger and The Buglin Bison (?) in Custer - both excellent, but VERY crowded.

Great Getaway in the Black Hills

  • 5 of 5

This is a special property with plenty of room - very clean and well-maintained. We brought our own food and made gourmet meals each night. We will be back. Thanks, Mary and Mark for making our vacation memorable.
