Charming cottage in the heart of quiet Otter Creek -- the only village on Mt. Desert Island completely surrounded by Acadia National Park. On secluded Grover Ave. with the Park across the road, there is no better location for everything that the Island and Park have to offer.
Bustling Bar Harbor: 4 miles. Scenic Seal Harbor: 3 miles. Short walk to the Otter Creek general store, the 5-star Burning Tree Restaurant and a stop for the free Island Explorer shuttle that circles the Island. The head of Otter Cove (with public ramp) is a stroll down Grover Ave.
Hiking from our cottage is very rewarding. A ten minute walk from our front door on a Park trail takes you to where Otter Cove meets the ocean at the Park Loop Road causeway (20th photo looks back toward where the cottage is located). From there, more Park trails lead to Gorham Mtn., Ocean Path, Otter Cliffs, Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. Easy drives are the Jordan Pond House, Little Hunter's Beach, Day Mountain, Asticou Garden, Thuya Lodge, Sand Beach, Sieur de Monts, many mountain hikes, swimmable lakes and the natural wealth of Acadia and Mt. Desert.
But return to the peaceful haven of our cottage to relax on the screened porch (beautiful morning sun), cook in the fully-equipped kitchen (we like it better than our kitchen in Maryland), enjoy the fire pit at the back of our property and listen to nature.
The house has two bedrooms: one with a queen sized bed, one with a full sized futon. There is a comfortable living/dining room, kitchen, porch, one bathroom, a room at the end of the house that is perfect for writing or art making, a utility room and a garage for storing bikes or kayaks (no cars). There is a two-car driveway and a cute front yard full of flowers.
Please bring your own towels and sheets. We supply blankets, pillows and dish towels. For more photos please email and we'll send a link to our personal Maine web page.
Sunday, 3:00 pm/Check out Sunday, 11:00am.
High speed WiFi Internet (no TV), front loading washer, dryer, gas stove, coffee maker and grinder, microwave, toaster, blender, iron, local telephone (bring a calling card for long distance, or just skype), answering machine, all pots, pans, dishes, and cooking utensils, clothes line, 4 nice outdoor chairs, 2 chaise lounges, outdoor fire pit, small charcoal grill.
Location, location, location. This is a camp/cottage located in the middle of it all. Out of town, on free LLBean bus route, close to trails and carriage roads. It is on a dead end neighborhood street. If you are looking for views from your porch you are going to have to dig deeper, a lot deeper, and have lots of company. This is a get-away place. I would rent it again.
The house was very clean upon our arrival. Instructions were very precise. The house is old but delightful. If you don' t mind it not being ultra modern you will like it. You are very close to the national park, a relatively short walk will get you to Otter Cove Trail and from there you can get to many other destinations.
Hosts were very responsive. Answered all questions prior to arrival; when a problem with the house arose near the end of the stay they got on the case quickly, though they did not solve it before we left.
I would recommend the house, again unless you need something super modern. Its proximity to the national park and to lakes and beaches make it a nature lover's optimal location.
The only thing I'd add is some kind of table out back so that outdoors meals could be taken in the pleasant little garden.
There is no better place to stay than this amazing hidden gem on Mount Desert Island. It is the absolute perfect getaway. So tastefully decorated, with the perfect cozy feel. Sand Beach, Gorham Trail, Ocean Path, Otter Cove, are all easily accessible either by car or walk. This is the most unforgettable place to visit and if we are ever back at Acadia (which I hope we will), this is definitely the place to stay! Thank you for opening up your home to us!
The village of Otter Creek (population 200) is surrounded by Acadia National Park and the Atlantic Ocean. Every attraction listed in any Mount Desert Island guidebook is easily available. You can hike right out the door to some of the most scenic areas on the Island. The free Mount Desert Island Explorer bus stops right near the house.
We will be happy to discuss in advance whether our cottage will suit your needs.
