Our family of seven stayed for a week and had a fabulous time! I grew up on the lake (west side) so I know how great it can be. Jan and John were gracious, friendly hosts who anticipated our every need and . The cabin is cozy and updated, making for a very comfortable stay. Extra seating outside at the picnic tables (wave to the Judge as it goes by every evening!), plus a fire pit which was a huge hit (s'mores!) as well as the hammock. The steps to the water/boats are not bad -our four year old had no trouble. This is no cliff like some other places on the lake!! We enjoyed the kayak, rowboat, canoe, and of course fishing and swimming in the beautiful, clear lake. For a break, check out the village for shopping, restaurants, ice cream, and Friday night band concerts. My husband loves to bring his bike -a great way to explore the whole Finger Lakes area. If you want to rent a boat, check out Skaneateles Marina on West Lake Rd. My favorite part about this cabin is being able to sit in the living room with the windows open and feel the beautiful breeze....it's good for the soul.
Our family of 5 went to visit Skaneateles for one week. Our hosts were very friendly. Though their house is located 200 feet from the cottage, it was a very private visit. The steps to the dock were not a problem as other reviewers mentioned. We also rented a boat and had no problem using the mooring and taking the rowboat to the mooring so we wouldn't have to wade into the water. The 11 acres of woods were great for walks and we saw deer, an owl and turkeys during our stay. The children enjoyed the creek as well as the lake activities. We were allowed to use the kayaks and canoe as we wanted. The setting is preserved as it was probably in the 50's when the cottage was likely built. The cottage was clean with a kitchen that was remodeled and a nice small bathroom. The kitchen did not have a dishwasher but that was okay since we had paper plates and many hands to help with dishes. The rooms were nice, but my husband and I chose to stay in the room with two twin beds since a double bed is a little small for us. That worked fine for us since our daughter enjoyed the double bed! We will return if we have the time in our schedule. It was very quiet and we were able to sleep uninterrupted every night. We enjoyed a fire in the firepit and found that the owners supplied the wood and propane for the fire and grill. It was a really nice time and we hope to return next year.
Jan and John were the epitome of gracious hosts! Their love for the lake shines through in their willingness to share this spot with others. The cottage was the best equipped place I have ever rented. Everything was clean and cozy. I noticed another travelers disappointment in the small amount of stairs to access the waterfront but let me clarify...in no way are the stairs or the walk from the cottage a burden compared to other camps on this lake. Just taking a kayak or boat around the lake will show you there are far, far harder treks to get you to the water. I'm so grateful for Jan's hospitality and making our stay so memorable. I look forward to renting from her again!
We had a wonderful family vacation at this Skaneateles Lake retreat. Our hosts, Janet and John, were very gracious. The lake was beautiful. We particularly enjoyed morning and evening kayak and canoe excursions. The accommodations were extremely clean and the cottage very cozy.
The location is excellent for easy day trips to some beautiful state parks. Would recommend Watkins Glen, Taughannock Falls and Chimney Bluffs in particular. They are beautiful and within easy distance of the "Camp." And a more picturesque Finger Lakes town than Skaneateles would be hard to come by.
We are looking forward to a return visit!!
We had a wonderful week with everything we looked for in a camp. The cottage was clean and true to the pictures/description as shown. It would have five stars were it not for the 30+ steps to get to the boathouse and water. Nevertheless, having kayaks, a canoe and a rowboat made the trek worthwhile even for guests in their seventies. We would recommend you bring your own life vests for your children which we did. The water was clear with no seaweed which was nice. The kids enjoyed their hike up the creek, swimming, fishing as well the watercraft. The village of Skaneateles is great for food and shopping and a variety of activities. Jan and John were always very accommodating at a moments notice!
What an enjoyable stay! Skaneateles is the most beautiful and clean of the Fingerlakes, and this cottage is at the best point on the lake on the East shore. We were so lucky to make arrangements to stay here on such short notice. The cottage is exactly what an upstate NY lake house should be and exactly what I was looking for. We had all modern appliances and conveniences in a very clean cottage. Despite the updated amenities, the cottage maintains its cozy camp charm. We also enjoyed the warm and gracious hospitality of our hosts. I was reminded of my stays on this lake as a child. We had great weather, great dining and activities in the village of Skaneateles and peaceful seclusion too.
We rented a powerboat, and if you are interested in the same I recommend Mark and Holly of Fingerlakes Boat Rental from nearby Aurora on Cayuga Lake. They had great rates, were prompt, and charged a very small delivery fee to bring the boat right to our dock. The Skaneateles based boat rental shop did not return calls or emails.
I highly recommend this cottage and already have some of my family planning to rent on their own next year. We will definitely be back next year. Thank you John and Jan for a great vacation.
