Very hospitable,Emily brought us local fruit (bananas & papaya).Thoroughly enjoyed our stay (except it was too brief!).
So said Shakespeare, and so we say! South Andros was a wonderfully unique experience made better by our charming hosts, Ed and Emily. They were most concerned for our comfort and took responsibility for making our stay educational as well as recreational. We felt included in all their activities, and for this reason we recommend the Rahmings's for those who wish to truly experience island life as it is lived by ordinary people (not that the Rahmings are by any means ordinary!).
The unit has an unparalleled view of the ocean. We slept soundly, lulled by constant breezes and the sound of the waves. Nice linens were provided in abundance. We had plenty of hot water and appreciated use of the laundry equipment, as well. Located at the end of the settlement, the unit offers plenty of privacy. We were quite comfortable, and everything we needed was supplied.
My husband and I and our four children (ages 15, 13, 10 and 9) went on a guided nature hike with Ed during our vacation on South Andros over Spring Break (March 2015). It was truly one of the unexpected highlights of our vacation. The kids weren’t too keen on going on the hike initially – admittedly it was hard to leave one of the most beautiful beaches we’d ever seen to venture into the woods for a few hours. However, within minutes of starting the hike, Ed won the kids over with his engaging personality. During the hike, we learned a lot about the natural resources, animals and birds of South Andros as well as a bit about Bahamas history. Ed kept the kids interested by pointing out different plants and trees along the way and explaining what they are used for (food, building materials, etc.) on the islands. The kids particularly enjoyed the visit to the rat bat cave, where we were able to climb down into the cave and view the bats flying around. We also saw three blue holes during the hike and even went swimming in the last one we visited – which was quite an experience in itself and extremely refreshing at the end of the hike. Ed is an incredibly personable and knowledgeable guide and I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting South Andros.
After the hike Ed brought us back to his house, where we met his charming wife, Emily. Ed chopped down some sugar cane and coconuts, picked some sapodilla fruits and bananas and we all sat down for a picnic by the beach. The kids were fascinated by the way Ed chopped open the coconuts with a machete and served them fresh coconut water and coconut jelly. Between the hike and the picnic on the beach, it was truly a memorable experience for all of us and definitely one of the highlights of our trip!
While we did not stay with Ed and Emily, we did take a tour of their house and the rental accommodations. Both are extremely nice with easy access to the ocean and amazing views. Add one of the most charming couples on the island as your hosts and it’s the perfect vacation rental! We had the opportunity to see Ed and Emily a few more times before we left including at a community event, where Emily taught one of my daughters to weave straw and introduced her to some of the local girls her age. They even came to the airport to see us off the day we left. Ed and Emily made us feel like family and we will never forget their kindness and hospitality. Two of the nicest people you will ever meet!
My husband and I have stayed at the Rahming's apartment previously, and were so impressed we booked a second time. Ed picked us up at the airport, as promised, and Emily greeted us with a wonderful meal of fresh fish for lunch. The apartment is lovely, airy, and bright, and we walked the beach in the morning and could hear the surf through the window. Emily and Ed were quick to come to the rescue with any issues or questions, and made arrangements to help us along the way. The Rahmings are a lovely couple, Andros is a slice of heaven, and they made us feel like family. We'll be back!
On May 18 ,my wife and I and our two grandchildren of 11 and 14 went with Ed on a nature tour to see the blue holes. This is a great experience for adults and kids alike. Ed is very knowledgeable about the plants and animals that you will see. This tour is worth the experience even if you are not normally interested in plants and animals. The scenery and the blue holes are spectacular with a lot of fun wildlife along the way. On our first day, Ed told us about a bat cave but weather did not allow us to see it. The kids wanted to see the bats so much that Ed was willing to take us back the next day. I was quite surprised at all the different things that I didn't noticed the first time through. At the end of the tour, Ed had some fresh coconuts that he cut open and shared coconut juice and coconut meat with us. He also had some fruit that he picked in his yard that morning. This was a really great finish to a very enjoyable tour. Ed gave us a short tour of the local communities with a little bit of history. I would highly recommend Ed as your guide for this cultural and nature tour.
The perfect beachside hideaway. Our host was welcoming and friendly, sharing recommendations and tips for local food. Communication leading up to our visit was fantastic. One of the easiest trip arrangements I've made. His love for South Andros was palpable as he shared a rare opportunity to see a beautiful Bahamas Oriole perched atop a nearby tree. I'll visit again.
