Bucolic Waterfront Nature Filled Modern Retreat

Half Baths1
Space 3,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Waterfront 4 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms, Sleeps 10 Beach House.

This unique Kast-designed modern is located directly on Gardiner's Creek and enjoys splendid views of a historic plantation and nature galore. The house itself has an open-plan design with a wall of glass doors which lead to the deck by the water. The kitchen has the latest appliances, while the upstairs bedrooms all have water views. The third floor offers a study/office/sitting room with skylights and water views. A rare find where one can commune happily with the beauty of nature including kingfishers, terrapin, migratory birds, long-legged waders, duck and geese, as well as swells of fish. Truly a tranquil home, located within easy walking distance to Shelter Island’s famous Sunset Beach and Derring Harbor.

In the warmer months you can lie in bed and hear the Baby Ospreys diving into the water learning how to catch fish. On the third floor is a very large sitting room with views of the Creek. Also a lovely self contained bedroom and en suite bathroom are found on the south side.

It is filled with a combination of slick mid century modern and contemporary furniture and great art. As parents of two small children they have been careful to make the house extremely practical.

Garden: The house’s garden was designed by the well know garden designer Lisa Stamm. A combination of Purples, Whites and graded green/grays her signature color palette is reflected in the simple but clever planting of layered foliage. Butterfly and hummingbird attracting foliage comes into its own throughout the summer. A wisteria shaded pergola dining area sits just outside the kitchen next to the vegetable garden and children’s wooden playhouse a miniature version of the main house.

The dock is plenty big enough to sit and star gaze at night in the complete and utter silence of Gardeners creek. It also has steps into the creek to provide easy access for swimming and water activities for all age groups. As the house sit across from Sylvester Manor it is an easy canoe ride away to any events happening during the season even camp for the children! All the land opposite the house is reservation so no buildings and not a human to be seen.

And for those who like to workout there is a gym with rowing machine, weights and yoga apparatus in the fully finished basement with room sized mirrors and ballet bars.

About Sam Hugh-Jones

We are an English couple with two children, ages 5 and 3. We live in Manhattan, New York.

Sam Hugh-Jones purchased this house in 2007

Why Sam Hugh-Jones chose Hamptons

Shelter island is Unique place…as soon as you get on either the north or south ferry you exhale.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with our home because of the amazing waterfront location and design of the house. Although this is our second house, it is still very much our home and we spend a significant part of the year there. As such it is furnished and equipped to a level of comfort and convenience beyond that of a year-round rental property.

It is truly magical listening to the frogs and cicadas at night or the ospreys dive bombing into the creek. Watching the turtle sunbathing on the rocks or lying on our dock star gazing in the middle of Gardeners creek.

Wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely home - the setting is magical and the style and design fab! The only thing we would change is the beds - as the third room has two singles rather than a double which isn't great for a couple. But overall it's fantastic.

Beautifully curated, relaxing home

  • 5 of 5

We had a relaxing stay with our extended family at this beautiful house and property over the summer. We took advantage of the lovely dock everyday with the in-house kayaks, canoe and paddleboard. Preparing meals in the chef's kitchen was a dream. We loved picking books out of the stocked library and enjoying the fresh air from the many sliding glass doors circulating over the designed open floor plan. All in all a fantastic getaway!

Beautiful and tranquil

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed our month-long stay in this lovely, tasteful home in the most beautiful location. Early morning canoe rides, bird watching from the terrace, meditating on the dock and coffee under the wisteria made our stay delightful and restorative. We look forward to returning.

Beautiful Serene Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The pictures don't capture what a lovely and surprising home this is nor how spectacular its setting. The landscaping, the views of the creek, the subtle winningness of the architecture...a great experience.

We found the house warm and artfully arranged with stylish and comfortable furniture and good artwork. The overall effect is clean and organized but in an unfussy way, plus a great kitchen that would please a serious chef, all perfect for an enlightened beach house. It was such a treat to wake up to the dreamy views of the creek after a night of restful sleep on the exceptionally comfortable king-size bed.

Though the weather during our stay was great - and there is plenty to do on Shelter Island/Hamptons - at times we enjoyed just lounging around the house and deck, reading, cooking, paddling around in the canoe & kayaks...we had to motivate ourselves to leave. On the one rainy day, we were happily occupied with various fun activities in the house - playing games, exercising in the basement workout room and browsing through the wonderful selection of movies on the Roku TV system. We can only imagine how cozy it would be to huddle around the fireplace in the winter months!

Meanwhile, the location - minutes from ferry, beaches, shops and restaurants - could not be more convenient. The house is an easy 5-minute drive from the famed Vine Street Café and a short ferry ride away from wineries on the North Fork and the lovely, low-key town of Sag Harbor on the South Fork.

The owners are super pleasant and accommodating. They left well-written notes detailing their home and Shelter Island attractions which certainly made our lives a lot easier.

This is a dream of a vacation home. We look forward to our return.
