Ketchikan House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 12)

Live the Alaskan dream; a house on the water with a rental boat waiting at the dock, ready to go on a self guided fishing adventure or exploring! Located in a calm cove on a beautiful beach with a private fishing pier we are just minutes away from the prime salmon and halibut fishing grounds. Dungeness crab are thick in the bay just a 15 minute boat ride away. Crab pots and cooker are provided!

Why Ketchikan for self guided fishing?

Great variety of both saltwater and freshwater fishing.

Large runs of all five species of salmon; nearby halibut holes; Ling Cod; Red Snapper; excellent Dungeness crab grounds 20 minutes from house.

All weather fishing; the ability to fish open ocean water nearby and protected inside waters.

Be on the water the same day you leave home; Ketchikan is a direct 1.5 hour flight from Seattle.

Why Pennock Island for self guided fishing?

A ten minute boat run from the airport, you will be fishing the day you land.

Great mid way location between south and north fishing grounds.

15 minute run to Dungeness crab fishing grounds.

24 hour use of boat with no curfew.

Herring and crab bait on site.

Fish processing room and extra large freezer.

No car rental necessary, downtown private boat slip in Ketchikan.

Five minute run to town for shopping and restaurants.

Authentic Alaskan home milled from lumber on the land.

High end kitchen appliances, knives and pans.

Do not want to cook? Use our optional catering services.

Optional maid service: $35 per day.

And the other great reason to come:

A stunning sunset location with a hot tub!

Peak seasons for fish species in our area:

King Salmon: May, June and July.

June 1 - July 30th: Terminal Harvest for King Salmon at Herring Cove: Non residents fishing restrictions do not apply: No size limit; six per day; no non resident annual limit. Herring Cove is about 20 minutes by boat.

Silver Salmon: July, August, September.

Halibut: June, July, August, September.

Our home is set on Pennock Island, a three minute boat ride from Ketchikan. There are no noisy roads here, just trails leading along the beach and through the forest. Pennock Island has all the advantages of being minutes away by boat from shopping, restaurants and attractions but a world away from the hustle and bustle.

Relax after a day on the water on the expansive decks overlooking the water, perfect for cooking your catch on the BBQ. A hydrotherapy spa faces west for relaxing soaks as the sun sets.

All our rental boats are equipped to fish and we offer on site classes to catch salmon, halibut and crab if you are starting out fishing or looking to improve your skills.

Our rental boats are high quality aluminum from Hewescraft and are rigged to fish.

2013 20' Hewescraft Pro V Hard top extended transom. Offers a deeper hull for a smoother ride, a wider beam and more deck space with built in insulated fish box, wash down, hydraulic steering and electric trim tabs. Trucker seats offer a smooth ride and a built in stereo to listen to the radio or bring your iphone or pod to cruise to your own tunes. Powered with a fuel efficient 150hp Honda and a 8hp kicker. PRO V is also rigged with downriggers and is ready to fish and provides the ultimate comfort for up to groups of four. Rents at $450 per day.

2005 Hewescraft Sportsman. 90hp Yamaha. Rigged to fish. A flatter hull and way less comfort than the Pro V. $350/day.

If a second runabout boat is needed for those not fishing and staying at the house we have a Lund skiff at $175/day.

Fishing poles for salmon and halibut are available for a $5/day charge per pole. Clients are responsible for providing their own tackle.

There is no time curfew on self guided fishing boat rentals which means you can get the 4am bite.

Herring bait and crab bait are available for sale in the fish processing area. No need to keep running back to town and a guaranteed supply of herring which often sells out in town.

We provide a courtesy pick up upon your arrival in Ketchikan at either the airport or in town. We will pick you upon arrival at the baggage claim and bring you to the house so you can drop your luggage off. We will then give you an orientation on the boat and go over the rental agreement and our local area. Our check in time is not until 4pm but you can use the boat to go and get your groceries and get a jump on the fishing while we are getting the house ready. We do not rent the house without a boat rental, unless you are coming with your own boat.

On your departure day, check out is at 10am, we can either drop you at the airport or in town. Alaska Airlines will allow bags to be checked in four hours prior to departure and there is a small ferry you can then take to the town side if you want to spend your last hours visiting town.

Our home was built by hand from yellow cedar trees cut from the surrounding forest and milled locally and offers:

Upper floor:

Large king bedroom with one king bed and two twin beds. Exceptional water and forest views.

Lower floor:

1 bedroom with queen and 2 singles. Water and forest views.

1 bedroom with queen bed with garden and forest views.

1 bedroom with one twin bed. Garden and forest views.

And a small loft bedroom accessed by a hidden drop down stair offers a single twin bed. Suitable for teens who like the hideaway, however it has a very low ceiling height for adults and is awkward to access with the narrow ladder.

Bedrooms are provided with high thread count cotton linens.

Our home offers a wonderful beach for exploring right outside the front door with excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Trails lead to remote beaches on the backside of the island. Here you can wander the beach in solitude beachcombing or relaxing in peace with a book.

Your hosts Kim and Richard live nearby and are available to help with any concerns during your stay. We enjoy sharing the island lifestyle and you are welcome to join in island adventures; beach combing the back side of the island, hiking in the forest and muskeg; towing home a beach log for firewood, splitting and stacking wood for winter or going crabbing for Dungeness Crab.

Concierge services are also available: housekeeping services; full or partial catering; daily guiding for fishing; beach combing and remote hiking.

We look forward to seeing you here!

About Kim Kirby

Kim Kirby is your host at Pennock Island.

Kim is originally from England and came to Ketchikan in 1990, kayaking here from Juneau a trip that lasted three months. Paddling the Inside Passage was the start of a long love affair with Southeast Alaska and Pennock Island offered a wonderful way to continue to live close to the water with a few more amenities!

Kim started and ran a kayak company in Ketchikan for 12 years before finding the perfect island getaway on Pennock Island in 2005.

She has five acres on Pennock and enjoys sharing the island lifestyle with guests visiting from around the world.

She has her US Coastguard Captain's license and a flying license and enjoys float plane flying around the local area.

She is happy to share with you what makes Alaska so special, be it on the water fishing, hiking the ridge tops or beach combing.

Kim Kirby purchased this house in 2005

Why Kim Kirby chose Alaska

Being on the water in SE Alaska is pure joy and living an island lifestyle with no roads means you are on the water all the time. Forget the stress of cars and roads and noise. Here you live a life set to the rythym of wind and tides.

The dog can run free and is the alarm bell when visitors show up at the front door, which is the dock that stretches across the tidal beach.

Snug Harbor House is the last inhabited house on the grid. Beyond is the wilder back side where you can walk the beach for about a mile with no other person in sight.

The interior of the island is untouched and is great to explore following deer trails through the rainforest and muskeg.

People are pretty scarce on the island and it is always a joy to share time chatting if you bump into one another in the bay or along the beaches.

What makes this house unique

Snow's Cove on Pennock Island offers all the advantages of living a life without roads and cars and all the benefits of a town within a short five minute boat ride. Privacy, peace, wildlife and woodland walks and just plain messing about in a boat are all here.

A True Anglers Dream

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Ketchikan’s Pennock Island and stayed in the Alaska Remote Lodges the second week of June, 2016. From the minute Richard picked us up at the airport, to our day of departure, we could not have asked for a more inviting facility or location; truly an exceptional and authentically Alaska experience. There are no words that can fully describe the proximity to civilization with the remoteness of Pennock Island. From the quaint garden in the backyard, to the low-water tide beachcombing, there’s always something new to see and experience. Bald Eagles were a frequent sight, roosting in the nearby trees on constant watch while taking full advantage of the bounties of the sea. The boat ramp and deck made for easy access, and the Hewescraft Pro V proved to be the perfect watercraft for the fishable waters close by and out to Duke Island and beyond. Although early for the Chinook run, we still managed to scratch out a few Kings, a handful of Halibut, and dozens of the best eating Dungeness Crab on the planet.

Kim is the quintessential host for this true Angler Dream, giving us our space, yet visiting and making sure were had everything we needed for a perfect fishing adventure; we even had the pleasure of fishing with Richard, who is truly the Halibut Whisperer!

The Lodge itself is grand, with an excellent kitchen, roomy and comfortable rooms, hot showers and laundry… what more could four guys fishing need? The answers easy, a Hot Tub that was landed on the ocean view deck via a helicopter!

Kim’s Alaska Remote Lodges (AKA Anglers Dream) will be a return trip for me for sure. Next time I will bring my wife so she can experience the sunsets, the wildlife, and the vast waters surround the island, albeit being close enough to shop.

  • 5 of 5

Kim and Richard are just great, we all love this property, the super boats, gear, everything we need for 3 days of great fishing and crabbing. Everything was perfect. Still your listing does not have show the amount of gear and service Richard provides fore fishing. We brought 3 new guys on the trip and they were blown away. Cannot wait to book again for next year. Thanks again for everything.

relaxing vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful, relaxing vacation! What a treat to have Ketchikan within a 5 minute boat ride, but then the luxury and solitude of the cabin for us to enjoy! The fishing was terrific (even caught a salmon right off the dock!) and Richard our guide was fun, helpful and knew exactly where to go to find our catch. Kim was always available for any of our needs...which were not much...just being there and soaking in the soaring eagles, watching the sea planes take off and land, and enjoying the incredible sunsets made for a most perfect get away!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Kim and Richard were wonderful hosts and great people. They bent over backwards to help us in every way. We even talked Richard into going fishing with us one day and that was the best day of fishing we had. Everyone on board caught fish. The house was clean, comfortable and well supplied, not to mention the great view. I would highly recommend this vacation rental.

Amazing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent the last week of June at Rich and Kim's beautiful home. It was everything advertised on line and more, only the view is that much more beautiful in person. The multitude of bald eagles perching all around the house was amazing. The house was spacious and well-equipped. Loved the large covered porch! The dock is private and new; we loved watching the sun set from the swing. Getting groceries was an experience. They have carts to haul stuff in. you take the boat to the marina, go up the walkway, cross the parking lot to the grocery store, then roll your items back down to the boat. It was part of the charm. We rented the Pro-V 20' boat and it met all our needs - was spacious, maintained, clean and great for fishing. Rich was really friendly and hospitable, showing us some spots to fish and crab. We used his crab pots, headed to the spot he told us, and sure enough enjoyed an amazing crab dinner -from the ocean to the plate the same day. This was truly an easy trip. From the airport, Rich picked us up, we stopped for groceries and on to the island where the house is. Was so glad the house was away from the hustle and bustle of Ketchikan. Check the cruise ship port info and go into Ketchikan when less boats are there. Keep in mind that when they all leave, the shops close down though-even at 3:00 pm. We learned that the hard way..Fishing - we missed the king salmon run, but the silvers were coming in. Fishing was not as plentiful as I had hoped but we had some strange weather -( a few days where the water was too rough) and it takes a few days to get your bearings. However, we left with enough fish to last us for awhile and enjoyed it. We caught a lot of Rockfish, which we were disappointed in at first (because it wasn't halibut) until we learned how delicious they were.. Before I forget-the hot tub. It was heavenly. It was 57 degrees with soft Alaskan rain, but it was 104 in the hot tub. Nothing more relaxing after a hard day of fishing. Can't say enough good things...would highly recommend for a very relaxing, beautiful place for a small or large family. Only thing I would do differently is stay for two weeks next time. Thanks Kim and Rich for allowing us to use your home -and for your kindness while we were there. A fantastic experience.
