Two quiet, private acres on the riverfront. Swim, paddle, dream in the hammock
About Ruth Monsell
I am an artist, so my home is filled with original paintings, mine and others'. I was widowed in 2012 and my children live in SC and CA, so I like to go spend time with them when I can. I also travel for my work at times, cutting silhouette portraits at weddings, corporate events and historical homes.
Ruth Monsell purchased this House in 2000
Why Ruth Monsell chose Damariscotta
We knew when we first saw the breathtaking view that this was what we had come to Maine for. It has been a daily treat since then. The fact that we're at the end of little peninsula means we see the river from front and back. A huge bonus is the neighbors, and our commonly owned private point, with park benches. We completely renovated the house top to bottom when we bought it, making it very much our own. The furnishings are a blend of antique and comfy-contemporary. I always get compliments on the colors and artistic feel of the house.
What makes this House unique
Unique benefit? I have to say the view, again. It's pretty idyllic here! The birds often make more sounds than anything else. But it's also lovely to be just a mile or two from grocery stores, a drug store, post office, Reny's ('A Maine Adventure' with two stores in Damariscotta), gift and clothing stores, the movie theater and several excellent restaurants! That can not be said about the majority of homes in mid-coast Maine. We also have the Great Salt Bay and Damariscotta Lake very near by, and a lovely sandy beach, rarely crowded, within 15 minutes. The lighthouse pictured on the Maine quarter is a 20-25 minute drive down the very scenic Pemaquid Peninsula, along with Fort William Henry. We have a local lobsterman downtown who will even cook the lobsters for you if you prefer (as will the supermarkets.) You'll see all manner of shore birds. Most summers bring a resident Great Blue Heron. On my property there have been bald eagles, deer, turkeys, fox, and even once a bull moose (but, no guarantees he'll make a return appearance!)

Wonderful week in Damariscotta
We had a great time staying at Ru's lovely home. It's a great location in a quiet neighborhood not too far from "downtown" Damariscotta. We used it as a home base to visit various points in Maine, including Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay, and Belfast, which were all easy drives from this location. The Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay are not to be missed!
As cat lovers (with two at home), we especially enjoyed having the occasional company of Ru's two cats, Welly and Daisy, who came and went through their own private entrance. Their snuggles were particularly welcome on several very cool nights during our stay.
Gorgeous views, lovely house & comfortable beds!
Fabulous stay in Ruth's house. The views are as advertised and the house itself is very comfortable. Plenty of comfy seating in the living area, well-supplied kitchen and comfortable beds & pillows. Had coffee on the porch every morning which was wonderful and really made the whole stay...and we had fun playing pool in the basement as well!
Only very minor caveat, which was NOT an issue: the only AC is in the master bedroom. However even though it was pretty warm in Maine while we were there, fans were provided for each bedroom and we weren't uncomfortable in the least.
Ruth was a lovely host and available for calls if any questions arose. We would absolutely stay here again!
Relax and renew.
Very much enjoyed our stay at Ruth’s home. Everything was perfect. There is a beautiful view but if you are looking for easy access to the water, this is not the place. For swimming, visit the beautiful Pemaquid Beach. Also take time to also go to the Pemaquid Light House. Town is 5 minutes away and has wonderful restaurants and shops.
Beautiful home / lovely views
We had a fantastic time at Ru's Damariscotta home. We spent 5 nights over this past memorial weekend. We loved the fact that her home felt like it was tucked away in the woods and yet it had all the modern amenities (esp wifi..since my husband had some work to finish) and it was also close to town. The view of the Damariscotta river in the morning was simply prestine! But the vivid view of the milky way at night just took our breath away. Ru was very welcoming and timely with all communications. We would love to go back and stay at her vacation home again.
We loved it!
Very clean, beautifully furnished, great view, lovely yard and flowers. Owner showed us around and gave us tips on house and area. Everything was generously supplied. Cute town with great restaurants. Would love to return.
Thanks so much, folks! And that's the promptest review ever!
Wonderful home in a perfect location
Our stay over the Fourth of July holidays was fantastic. First, the house locations couldn't be better. A couple of miles from the main street of Damariscotta, easy access to lakes, beaches and sites, yet set off in lovely cul de sac.
The house itself is absolutely charming. The rooms are well proportioned. The bathrooms appear to be recently renovated and the kitchen is brand new. The living areas are cozy and tastefully decorated. Bedrooms are large, particularly the master suite. Outdoor space is well suited for entertaining with several seating areas, an outdoor grill and lobster cooker. Plus great views of the river.
The owner is a great host and welcomed us personally. She showed us around and explained all of the house features. She was available by telephone for any questions.
All in all a great experience.
Damariscotta is ideal for exploring up and down the best of the Maine coastline, including several wonderful peninsulas. The lighthouse featured on the Maine quarter, Pemaquid Light, is right at the end of 'our' peninsula, about a 20 minute drive. I can share scenic drives on back roads, some with overlooks. Brunswick, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Rockport and Rockland are all easy day drives. Maine's largest city, Portland, with its world class restaurants, symphony, professional theaters and mall is just an hour. Freeport, home of L.L. Bean, is 45 minutes. Boats to Monhegan Island and puffin and whale watching are just 15 minutes away, as is Pemaquid Beach.
