Set on ten and a half wooded acres, this modern tree house is perfect for visitors to the nation's capital who want a quieter respite after days of sightseeing & touring museums. It's also a great retreat for those in the city who desire some time in nature.
The house has won a number of architectural design awards and has been featured on HGTV and a number of publications. The architect worked with an artist and astronomer to design and build the house around an art installation that captures and projects the sun's rays onto a canvass wall. This light drawing moves with the sun and is visible for varying periods of the day during the autumn and winter months.
There is a nature trail on the property, as well as hot tub, hammock and Weber gas grill so that you may enjoy the sights and sounds of nature--deer, hummingbirds, frogs, turtles and owls are regular residents.
Located across the Potomac from Mt. Vernon, the home is just 30 minutes from Capitol Hill. You'll find several grocery stores, Starbucks and the essentials within a couple miles. In addition to the historic sights in D.C., the property is located near the National Colonial Farm--a historic farm museum near the banks of the Potomac River.
I'm an urban dweller and I can't get enough of nature. Lightcatcher Retreat is my escape from the city. It's where I recharge my battery and I'm honored to act as its caretaker. My yellow-lab Molly is also a big fan.
Whether Molly and i are on our morning stroll through the nature trail, reading a book that turns into a nap in the hammock, or entertaining friends for dinner, I find something magical and spiritual about this special place.
Tony purchased this house in 2013
I climbed a lot of trees as a kid and have always been drawn to the woods. I had dreamed of one day having my own, adult tree house. And then LIghtcatcher Retreat literally found me in the form of a random Friday morning email--the photos immediately hooked me.
The modern construction looked right out of Dwell magazine and something I'd like to think I would have designed if given those talents. However, it was the secluded privacy and protected woodlands that sealed the deal for me. I think you'll understand after you've stayed here.
The house won a number of architectural design awards for it’s simplicity and function when it was built. It is featured in several books, an HGTV episode and a number of publications including The New York Times design column.
It's unique in many ways--one is that the architect worked with artist Janet Saad-Cook to build the house around an art installation that creates a sun drawing on one of the walls during the autumn and winter months.
It is a lovely setting, a fun house. We were able to see the sun drawing and deer. It surprised us that they came closer when we turned the outside lights on. Unfortunately we were not able to explore and get out for the walks we were hoping to do. Maybe another time. Thanks for sharing your home.
Our party of six just returned from a 10-night stay at the Lightcatcher Retreat. We had the pleasure of staying for both Christmas and New Year's and were very pleased with our stay. First, I'll provide all of the routine information. The photographs and descriptions of the property are accurate. Tony provided excellent customer service and the property was clean and well-maintained. I would certainly recommend the property to friends and relatives (in fact, I already have) and will likely stay here again in the future. The property is close to Washington, D.C., National Harbor, Alexandria and Waldorf. You can visit any of these places and then head back to the property for a comfortable stay at night. Now, for a few other details and things that I especially enjoyed....the heated floors! I am always cold, so I sincerely appreciated the heated floors. We were so comfortable at the property, that unless we had a good excuse, we stayed at the house for a majority of our vacation. It is tucked in the woods and is very quiet. The floor to ceiling windows were another of my favorites. Even on rainy days, we enjoyed the view! Tony couldn't have been better. We arrived to find everything we needed. Fluffy, bright white towels--including a "makeup towel"--were much appreciated. Notes were also conveniently posted to help with kitchen appliances and reminders about the septic system; Tony also provided a reference binder about the property and surrounding area. And, we LOVED the wood-burning stove in the main living area. It was easy to use and there was plenty of wood stocked for our use. We followed Tony's printed instructions (including photos) to build the perfect fire. We had good WiFi connectivity and the television in the main living area was a good size for the space. We binge-watched a TV series during our stay. And, we played lots of games around the coffee table while sitting comfortably on the heated floors. Tony also decorated the house for the holidays, which was exactly what we were looking for. The decorations were simple and tasteful. We brought extra lighting with us, which we projected on the large white wall and ceiling. For anyone with a projector, the large white wall in the main living area would be fun for watching movies. During the day, we enjoyed the colored reflections from the prisms suspended from the ceiling. It was a treat to see it on sunny days! We simply had a wonderful time.
The house was amazing & the owner went above & beyond to accommodate us. It is definitely worth the drive!
Our family stayed in Tony's house for a week over Thanksgiving, and the experience was truly magical. The house itself is unique, fun, and very well appointed. It was spotlessly clean, very comfortably furnished, and well prepared for our arrival. The setting takes the house up to a whole other level, as you are literally surrounded by a gorgeous forest. You can only see trees; no road, car, or house is visible from the property. The sum total of house and property adds up to a truly special retreat, and I highly recommend Tony's rental.
This house was so comfortable and spacious. I would highly recommend to friends without hesitation. So nice to come "home" and be able to relax after a day visiting Washington D.C. activities.
This property is amazing. It was the perfect retreat from busy days in DC. The property was easy to get to and feels completely surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife. The host was very organized and helpful throughout the stay. I would definitely recommend this place to others!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Lightcatcher Retreat! The property is secluded and situated in such a way that you literally feel as though you are in the treetops. We saw lots of wildlife right in the yard including deer and bard owls. It was a wonderful place to relax and recharge after our busy days sightseeing in and around DC. Everything was clean and comfortable and in good working order. Tony was easy to get in touch with and even sent a text to warn us that there would be a fireworks display at Mount Vernon so we wouldn't be alarmed by it. I would highly recommend the property and we hope to stay again in the future!
