Secluded Modern Retreat Half Hour from Washington, DC

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Space 2,000 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

Set on ten and a half wooded acres, this modern tree house is perfect for visitors to the nation's capital who want a quieter respite after days of sightseeing & touring museums. It's also a great retreat for those in the city who desire some time in nature.

The house has won a number of architectural design awards and has been featured on HGTV and a number of publications. The architect worked with an artist and astronomer to design and build the house around an art installation that captures and projects the sun's rays onto a canvass wall. This light drawing moves with the sun and is visible for varying periods of the day during the autumn and winter months.

There is a nature trail on the property, as well as hot tub, hammock and Weber gas grill so that you may enjoy the sights and sounds of nature--deer, hummingbirds, frogs, turtles and owls are regular residents.

Located across the Potomac from Mt. Vernon, the home is just 30 minutes from Capitol Hill. You'll find several grocery stores, Starbucks and the essentials within a couple miles. In addition to the historic sights in D.C., the property is located near the National Colonial Farm--a historic farm museum near the banks of the Potomac River.

About Tony

I'm an urban dweller and I can't get enough of nature. Lightcatcher Retreat is my escape from the city. It's where I recharge my battery and I'm honored to act as its caretaker. My yellow-lab is also a big fan.

Whether we are on our morning stroll through the nature trail, reading a book that turns into a nap in the hammock, or entertaining friends for dinner, I find something magical and spiritual about this special place.

Tony purchased this house in 2013

Why Tony chose Accokeek

I climbed a lot of trees as a kid and have always been drawn to the woods. I had dreamed of one day having my own, adult tree house. And then LIghtcatcher Retreat literally found me in the form of a random Friday morning email--the photos immediately hooked me.

The modern construction looked right out of Dwell magazine and something I'd like to think I would have designed if given those talents. However, it was the secluded privacy and protected woodlands that sealed the deal for me. I think you'll understand after you've stayed here.

What makes this house unique

The house won a number of architectural design awards for it’s simplicity and function when it was built. It is featured in several books, an HGTV episode and a number of publications including The New York Times design column.

It's unique in many ways--one is that the architect worked with artist Janet Saad-Cook to build the house around an art installation that creates a sun drawing on one of the walls during the autumn and winter months.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is a lovely setting, a fun house. We were able to see the sun drawing and deer. It surprised us that they came closer when we turned the outside lights on. Unfortunately we were not able to explore and get out for the walks we were hoping to do. Maybe another time. Thanks for sharing your home.

Amazing Retreat from the busy-ness of DC!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five stayed at the Lightcatcher for 7 nights. Can't say enough great things about it! Gorgeous setting and very unique home. Plenty of room to spread out after exhausting days seeing the sights in DC. Kitchen had everything we needed for breakfasts and a few dinners.

We drove into Huntington Metro Station in Alexandria each day and caught the subway. (Tried Anacostia one day but didn't find that to be as convenient.). The drive wasn't bad to the house but we definitely only made one trip in and out each day. A place in the city would have allowed for a bit more flexibility but the serenity at the Lightcatcher was just what we were looking for.

We didn't get to explore the Accokeek area much. B&J Carryout was great and convenient.

Thanks Tony for sharing your wonderful retreat with us!

Lovely retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Lightcatcher was such a lovely spot for our annual girls trip. Close enough to the city to go out for dinner quickly and easily, but far enough away that we could sit out on the porch in the morning and listen to the birds while we enjoyed our morning coffee. We loved the peaceful setting and the huge picture windows, that really brought the outdoors in.

Great retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This retreat was a great balance for us. My daughters wanted to see DC and I wanted a relaxing quiet vacation! We parked and rode the metro in to see the sights and retreated to the woods, hammock, and hot tub in the evenings. The beds were comfortable. The space was open and inviting but still privacy too. The house was beautiful and the setting was enchanting with the uplit trees. We even saw some deer! Tony was very helpful whenever we had a question. Thanks!

Unforgettable Stay

  • 5 of 5

Happy New Year, Tony!

I hope this finds you well. My apologies that I did not get this up right away. We stayed at the Lightcatcher this summer with my husband and 3 sons. We just loved our stay and have so many precious memories from our trip. I can't believe it has already been half a year since our stay. I have not been able to find the words since... so I have just decided to copy the Facebook post I wrote while we were there. (see below)

Thank you again for an awesome stay. It was perfect for us in every way.

Our home for the week. ❤️. It's called the Lightcatcher. ❤️❤️. I booked it as a surprise for my family (yep, a surprise even to my Mark). ❤️❤️❤️. A modern secluded retreat about a half an hour from the city... it has been featured on HGTV for its specialness. ❤️

All of us are into unique houses and the all of the boys are into architecture and design. I thought it would be the perfect balance between all that we absorb during the day and then come "home" to this to digest it and be close to nature...

The house alone has been an experience.❤️ Magical. They all love it. Mama does too. A lot.

I mean it's called "The Lightcatcher" for cryin out loud. She speaks to me.

A very unique secluded home

  • 4 of 5

Our annual sisters weekend was spent in this special house. We loved watching the light make beautiful designs on the canvas wall each morning. After sightseeing in busy Washington it was nice to return to woods and peace and quiet. A very special place. Loved it.
