Lake Gogebic itself is in two counties and in two time zones and contains jumbo perch, big walleyes and small mouth bass, snowmobile and boating. Lake Gogebic encompasses 13,380 acres with 38 miles of beautiful shoreline. People enjoy fishing Lake Gogebic for different fish including Perch and the lake has a boat landing on the south side that is a reasonable proximity from the cabin. Area ATV runs, partridge hunts, ice fishing derbies at close by Rogers Bar (w WIFI, cell tower).

There are many lakes in the National Forest areas also. And, many of them not far from the cabin. So, make it a week and check out MANY LAKES OVERALL.

The Cisco Chain abounds with walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, musky, and panfish. 15 lakes and 271 miles of wooded scenic shoreline. The lakes are dotted with many islands and variety of waters including spring-fed waters offer excellent fishing. The current state record musky was caught in Thousand Island Lake in 1980. The new bike trail includes all of Thousand Island Lake Road from the Watersmeet side to the Land O' Lakes side and connects with the many, many miles of trail. Our main snowmobile trail becomes our great ATV/UTV trails when it's not sledding season. Snowmobile or go fourwheeling over (bridge system) Agate Falls and take some beautiful photos. Use trail systems to see the other waterfalls also.

There is the Ottawa National Forest but also the Sylvania Wilderness Area is a national forest with 21,000 acres of virgin forests and 36 unspoiled lakes (Sylvania Wilderness Area is closed to motor boats on most lakes (and snowmobiles in the winter), but it is available to the public for canoeing, picnicking, hiking, fishing, swimming, snowshoeing, skiing, etc. The 18,327 acre Sylvania Wilderness is a rare natural treasure because of its pristine lakes, old-growth forest, and sylvan tranquility. The lakes are fed by rain and melting snow and are therefore crystal-clear. Streams and their potentially polluted waters do not enter the lakes because of Sylvania's location near a watershed divide, at a relatively high elevation. Sylvania's forest contains one of two large remnants of virgin northern hardwoods remaining in the Great Lakes region. It owes its undisturbed character to the fact that it was a private hunting and fishing club for more than half a century. The Forest Service purchased the property in 1966 when it became part of Michigan's 'Ottawa National Forest'. It was designated a ‘Wilderness’ in 1987. Come to the Sylvania Wilderness for some great hiking, canoeing, fishing, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing. This area has had people such as Eisenhower, Lawrence Welk, and Bing Crosby. Bing Crosby sang in Watersmeet’s Catholic Church. Roosevelt and many others. Look at the history on our website of the Stickley area around the cabin. Or, go for a bike ride on the bike trail system. The Wilderness Lakes Bike Trail System is the name given to a bike trail loop linking the communities of Land O’Lakes, Wisconsin and Watersmeet, Michigan. All terrain vehicle trails. Trails right out driveway of cabin. MI-TRALE book in cabin to use during your stay. Snowmobile right out the driveway and on the trails. Maps and stickers available at Rogers Bar down the road from the cabin. Cabin on acreage with Ottawa National Forest around cabin so you have privacy. Circle driveway.Great area for many canoeing adventures and trips. Play in the Ottawa National Forest

About The Owner

We care about our guests. Want you to have fun. Helpful information for a good trip overall in the cabin. The cabin has had much tender loving care. Stickley, the old time name of the town where the cabin is. And, the cabin has branches-sticks-logs decorated according to name in history and the theme regarding beavers. Stickley, like sticks and this was an old time logging area. Beaver Lodge Getaway with displays, books, DVDs and decor add some fun to your stay. Great for family and friends. Not far from the cabin was the last stagecoach robbery (which is on Stagecoach Road), west of the cabin (past the waterfalls) and on the way to Lake Gogebic and another boat landing area.

There are many stories and history of the area. And, we want you to create your own fun and personal history. Others will ask you where you had your vacation----and you can smile and say in the sticks (like the old saying meaning out in the woods, etc.). And, the cabin is actually decorated with real sticks-branches-wood. History - In the early 1900's a group of 6 prominent mining and steel industrialists purchased large tracts of land just west of Watersmeet and formed the Sylvania Club. These men, who had made their fortunes exploiting the environment, treasured and preserved Sylvania's forests, lakes and wildlife for the intangible wealth of its pristine qualities. Sylvania was unique and rare in that it had escaped the era of logging and the wave of fires that impacted most of the area around it. Club membership changed over the years and the Forest Service purchased the tract of land in 1967 from P.C. Christainson, the last surviving owner, and from the estate of Lawrence Fisher. For the first time, Sylvania was open to the public. All buildings were removed and trails that once accommodated carriages and motor vehicles now serve as hiking trails and portages between lakes. The 18,327 acre Sylvania Wilderness is a rare natural treasure because of its pristine lakes and more.

Why The Owner chose Upper Peninsula Michigan

Every direction has trails. This is the area that many movie stars use to come to and President Roosevelt. And, there are many mobster stories in the area (between the ones from Wisconsin and then also Michigan as this is the border area. The museum and others involved in historic preservation such as contacts at Sylvania Outfitters could share some interesting facts on the area**. Unique, theme, fun cabin w/beaver decor, branch siding, approx. 10 acres and w/Ottawa National Forest behind cabin. Displays, activity pages, DVDs, creative wall art, etc. Ceiling fans, fans, air conditioned and curtains-drapes-blinds to help keep it cooler in Summer. For the Winter the cabin has alternate heat sources, more insulation was put in the areas, and other weatherization done in the Winter (as some cabins are so cold otherwise in the Winter), this one stays. Microwave, toaster, can opener, coffee maker. Popcorn unit (like the theatre style). Ice cream maker (children or adults, bring back memories, something to remember for your trip). Satellite TV and flat screen TV. Sleeps to 16, extra seating in livingroom & kitchen. Three bedrooms plus other areas for sleeping. Two log queen beds and other neat wood furniture. Tent sites and sand, camper area & circle driveway. Picnic tables, chairs, charcoal grill, fire-pit. Game-room (foosball, air hockey, checker table, poker table, more), w/glass door fireplace stove, fireplace units, boot/glove warmer(s), pets allowed, mosquito zapper, outside white string party lights, clean cabin w mattress-pillow protectors. On snowmobile/ATV trail. Cabin has binder w area things to do, brochures on the area, restaurant guides, emergency information & maps on walls. Cabin is off of black top road (not gravel), Boat landing at Cisco Lake (15 lake chain). Kayak-canoe-ski-tube rentals at Sylvania Outfitters and with cross country ski trails. Fish-canoe-kayak branches of Ontonagon River. The Cisco Chain, Lake Gogebic, more

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin is in The Historic Stickley Area. Logging, cabins, historic history of business owners from a long time ago, area(s) which President Roosevelt hunted, fished, etc., mob stories, and more. (Sylvania Natural Wilderness Area has many stories, books, etc. about the area also). This area is toward town (east of the cabin).

Stickley (GNIS FID: 1621776) is a populated place located within the Township of Watersmeet, a minor civil division (MCD) of Gogebic County.

The elevation of Stickley is 1,634 feet. Stickley appears on the Thayer U.S. Geological Survey Map. Gogebic County is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6 hours). Many areas in some states are not this high.

Just north east approximately of the cabin was the area of "Stickley Lodge" the wilderness retreat for Albert Stickley of Grand Rapids, Michigan{Stickley Brothers Company/Quaint Furniture} brother of Gustav Stickley. Described as palatial, it had eight bedrooms and a huge $30,000.00 pipe organ. Albert used the location to oversee his lumber holdings. After his death lodge was turned into a resort "to a few who desire refinement and the companionship of cultured guests." Burned in the 40s.

At one time property had its own railroad spur. With a big "S" on the hillside marking his private train stop, Mr Stickley could be dropped off at the covered shelter with steps leading up the hill to the lodge. You can still make out the grading for the tracks thru the swamp that passes Stickley Lake/Turtle Lake.

You can enjoy the area of some of the great men and women that passed through this area many years ago. Visit the area museum (one in Land O'Lakes), walk through the National Forest, and enjoy the adventures.

GREAT CENTERED LOCATION TO DO MANY THINGS. On snowmobile and four wheeling trail (with many connecting trails). Great boat landing to a 15 lake serene, not overly populated, chain of lakes with many islands, wildlife, many types of evergreen trees that carry snow for a great Winter look, etc.

Guestbook comments from the owner
