A quiet and comfy space for value seekers who want the full city experience in a cozy and convenient location. Ideal for a couple that wants to soak in Chicago's 'Little Europe' as their base while visiting other sites.
Our place is a short stroll away from the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music where you can catch jazz, flamenco, samba, salsa, Cajun, reggae, African and other world music on any given night. Award-winning Half-Acre Brewery is just steps away in the other direction! Then there are countless high-end/ethnic/casual dining spots, grocery shopping, wine bars and pubs, a magnificent library, bookstore, European-style bakeries, candy shop, gelato parlor, an enormous park (great for outdoor activities and various year-round events), and many quaint specialty shops not found in other parts of the city.
Depending on your mood for the day, you might start the morning with a brisk walk thru Welles Park, followed by smoked lox and favorite dark roast across the street at Julius Meinl, make a stop or two at shops in Lincoln Square, have pad thai noodles for lunch at Opart Thai, then take the el-train ride to the Loop (downtown Chicago) for an afternoon at Millennium Park and the Art Institute, then head back to the neighborhood for dinner at Bistro Campagne, capping off the night at Huettenbar for beers. The next day may be a good time to bike around Lincoln Square, have a croissant and coffee at Selmarie, stop in across the street at Merz Apothecary, visit Old Town School of Folk Music to check out the night's performances, then on to early dinner at Mythos Greek Restaurant. Or just go economical and buy groceries/supplies at Jewel Food Stores (a minute walk from the property) and have a cookout in the backyard!
My name is Narciso 'Narci' Tavas. I am a retired electrical engineer who came to the United States from the Philippines thru employment with a global CPG firm with whom I had a long career. I greatly enjoyed the travels that came with my employment. I had memorable stays in Europe, particularly a one-year assignment in the Canary Islands, Spain. I have six children who grew up in Chicago, all of whom live within a short drive of Lincoln Square. I am a widower but happily re-married and live about a two-minute drive from this property. My wife and I enjoy times with the family, grandkids, travel, church functions, dining out and ballroom dancing.
Narciso 'Narci' Tavas purchased this apartment in 1997
The family and I love this property because of the neighborhood it's in and the rich experiences we enjoy from living in the area. It has great access to public transportation and is steps away from anything a traveler would want.
The neighborhood plays a huge part, but the place is special for its openness and multi-faceted history. It had once been a restaurant, business office, an art gallery, wine-tasting site and most importantly, a place for family get-togethers.
This unit is our second vacation rental, but please see below excerpts from recent reviews of our first unit (#3645846) located on the first floor of the same address. These would give you an idea of what the Lincoln Square neighborhood has to offer as well as our commitment to ensuring you have a memorable stay with us.
"Great apartment. We came to Chicago for the weekend and we made the right choice with the apartment. Quiet area but with lots of bars and restaurants. Ro was a great host, helpful and friendly.
I'll sure keep this place in mind if I need to find and apartment again in Chicago."
" We're decided to take our family to Chicago for a few days for Spring Break. We wanted a place where we could park the car and use the El to get around. We really lucked out here. First of all, the place is family-owned and the brother that met us upon arrival was great. Ro was a personable guy that was insistent if we needed anything to give him a call. He wanted to make sure we enjoyed our stay and it showed. Down about 4 doors from here is the Bad Apple, a really cool little corner bar. Just across from that is Half-Acre brewing. A few blocks in the other direction is Lincoln Square. There are good restaurants and bars everywhere around the place. A Lou Malnadi's is under construction two doors away. We walked around, dining, and enjoying the neighborhood until 10 or 11 at night. We always felt safe and never had any issues in the neighborhood that were concerning. The El is a 3 blocks or so up the road. It's about a 30 minute El ride to the loop. The kids enjoyed the ride down and back each day. I would definitely recommend this place. "
"I just got home after leaving this place today and I couldn't wait to get onto my computer to review it. When we got there, the host "Roe" greeted us with such friendliness that we felt at ease and comfortable at once. The property was clean and well maintained. Roe provided such a good customer service, more than we could have ever asked for. Even though we didn't get to walk around the neighborhood due to our short stay, Roe did tell us all about the cool things we could do around this place. Our stay here was such a delight that our group wants to come back to this place if we plan on coming to Chicago again."
A+++ for the wonderful place
A+++ for a pleasant stay
A+++ for an excellent customer service
Thank you Roe and Virgil for this unforgettable experience. :)
This cozy place was perfect for our needs...we could have breakfast there, tour all day (close to the "L"), and return home to relax in the evening. Owners were flexible and accessible.
Location is the key advantage of this rental and a slight disadvantage. The North Center/Lincoln Square neighbourhood made for a safe and easy week's stay. A supermarket is just a couple of minutes walk, and within 15 minutes there is a great range of restaurants, more casual places to eat, bars and other retail. It's just 10 or so minutes to several L stations, with convenient line options,but it takes a while to get to the Loop and downtown locations.
As stated, it's a cozy one bedroom apartment. The fixtures and fittings reflect elements of its history such as an older aircon that's a bit noisy, but it more than met our needs. The bed is comfortable and it's quiet at night, the kitchen worked well for cooking with a bit of adaption for the right dishes, and the bathroom was small but adequate.
We were welcomed on the first night and given instructions and recommendations. For the rest of the week it was a fine home away from home without any problems.
Great location and great neighborhood. Ro was in contact with us the day before our visit and kept up with us until we arrived. Although we did not have any issues, he made himself and his phone numbers available. Loved the neighborhood and having the opportunity to walk around town. The neighborhood is quiet and parking was easy to find and readily available even after midnight. Would definitely stay again and definitely recommend.
We really enjoyed our stay at this apartment. Ro was an awesome host and was nice enough to go over some of the neighborhood highlights. There are so many great places in that neighborhood that you could literally spend a week within a ten block radius and still feel like you missed out on some cool places. If you like beer, Half Acre Brewery is literally right down the street and is a great place!
We had a great time in Chicago at this property. It was perfect for our home base. The neighborhood is extremely safe and friendly. We felt safe the entire time we were there, even walking back from the subway at midnight after a Cubs game. The apartment was clean and tidy, and parking around back was easy. Ro meet with us and showed us all around, and gave advise on what to do and where to eat. The pizza place on the corner was excellent Chicago style pizza, and The Bad Apple bar and restaurant down the street had amazing burgers. Public transportation is super easy to get to as well. Thanks for everything, Ro. We will be back!
This property was phenomenally perfect for our stay in Chicago. It was a short walk to the Brown Line station and an easy train and bus ride from the airport. The location was perfect, with many amenities nearby, including a Jewel Osco grocery store a few blocks away, Lou Malnati's only steps away and delicious Thai and Mexican restaurants around the corner.
The apartment itself was perfect for us, with just enough space for the two of us to spread out and relax after a day of sightseeing. The apartment was clean and quiet, and definitely had some character.
Ro was an excellent host for our stay. He met us when we arrived and was happy to sit down and chat with us as well as point out some recommendations of things to do and places to eat, both in the neighbourhood and in the city. Sitting down with Ro and shooting the breeze was the perfect start to our vacation! Thanks for your hospitality!
This property is located in Lincoln Square, a neighborhood in Chicago's northside that takes pride in its richly interwoven cultures and one-of-a-kind businesses that are endearing even for a diverse city like Chicago. Specialty shops like Merz Apothecary, Ash's Magic Shop, Timeless Toys and Gene's Sausage Shop and Fine Wine Brokers are but a few memorable stops in the area. Lincoln Square is a quaint enclave within a city rich in industry, finance, arts, architecture, blues/jazz, theater and ethnic neighborhoods. Amidst the urban bustle lies Lincoln Square's quiet, tree-lined streets where both residents and visitors enjoy year-round events, shopping, food and music festivals, gourmet and casual dining, neighborhood pubs, park activities, sightseeing, farmers markets, local craft beers and festivities like Oktoberfest that draw crowds from other states and countries. Some call the area 'Little Europe' for its European-style cafes, delis and specialty stores. Over its long and rich history, Lincoln Square has been settled by waves of immigrants from Germany, Greece, Eastern Europe, Asia and Mexico who have enriched the economy and traditions of the neighborhood. Cuisines from all continents are amply represented here.
Lincoln Square is also home to the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music, which, since moving to the neighborhood in the late 90's, has made the area a go-to destination for dining and nightlife. Many well-known folk, world, bluegrass, jazz, blues and country musicians from all over the world perform at the Old Town School of Music. Pete Seeger, Ottman Lieber, Mahalia Jackson, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Earl Klugh and Bonnie Koloc, Rickie Lee Jones, to name a few, have held concerts there.
