(Please note: This unit sits above our HomeAway listing #3645846 which has been in operation since November 2013. Please check our reviews to help you decide. We want to make sure you enjoy your time in our home and in our city! And check out our new listing #3790035!)
A quiet and comfy space for value seekers who want the full city experience in a cozy and convenient location. Ideal for a couple that wants to soak in Chicago's 'Little Europe' as their base while visiting other sites.
Our place is a short stroll away from the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music where you can catch jazz, flamenco, samba, salsa, Cajun, reggae, African and other world music on any given night. Award-winning Half-Acre Brewery is just steps away in the other direction! Then there are countless high-end/ethnic/casual dining spots, grocery shopping, wine bars and pubs, a magnificent library, bookstore, European-style bakeries, candy shop, gelato parlor, an enormous park (great for outdoor activities and various year-round events), and many quaint specialty shops not found in other parts of the city.
Depending on your mood for the day, you might start the morning with a brisk walk thru Welles Park, followed by smoked lox and favorite dark roast across the street at Julius Meinl, make a stop or two at shops in Lincoln Square, have pad thai noodles for lunch at Opart Thai, then take the el-train ride to the Loop (downtown Chicago) for an afternoon at Millennium Park and the Art Institute, then head back to the neighborhood for dinner at Bistro Campagne, capping off the night at Huettenbar for beers. The next day may be a good time to bike around Lincoln Square, have a croissant and coffee at Selmarie, stop in across the street at Merz Apothecary, visit Old Town School of Folk Music to check out the night's performances, then on to early dinner at Mythos Greek Restaurant. Or just go economical and buy groceries/supplies at Jewel Food Stores (a minute walk from the property) and have a cookout in the backyard!

About Narciso 'Narci' Tavas
My name is Narciso 'Narci' Tavas. I am a retired electrical engineer who came to the United States from the Philippines thru employment with a global CPG firm with whom I had a long career. I greatly enjoyed the travels that came with my employment. I had memorable stays in Europe, particularly a one-year assignment in the Canary Islands, Spain. I have six children who grew up in Chicago, all of whom live within a short drive of Lincoln Square. I am a widower but happily re-married and live about a two-minute drive from this property. My wife and I enjoy times with the family, grandkids, travel, church functions, dining out and ballroom dancing.

Why Narciso 'Narci' Tavas chose North Center
The family and I love this property because of the neighborhood it's in and the rich experiences we enjoy from living in the area. It has great access to public transportation and is steps away from anything a traveler would want.
What makes this Apartment unique
The neighborhood plays a huge part, but the place is special for its openness and multi-faceted history. It had once been a restaurant, business office, an art gallery, wine-tasting site and most importantly, a place for family get-togethers.

Great for Couples on the Go
Our stay and this place were perfect for each other!
This apartment is comfortable for a couple who is on the go. The location was great. It was right next to a variety of great restaurants and a large grocery store. We easily traveled by Uber everywhere in under 15 minutes. We loved to walk around this very family friendly neighborhood and enjoyed the parks, book stores, and shops.
You’ve got my recommendation!
Great Lincoln Square Spot!
Close to everything. Comfortable. Very nice "landlords"!
Great photo shop on the pictures!
I expected old, but not gross. The cleaning chemicals were toxic, the kitchen floor was tacky, looked like someone just ran a mop on the floor after spraying a cleaner. The carpet is from the 50’s and cleaned about the same time. The bathroom has black mold. Every dish I pulled out was dirty. The bed was passable at best. The place is heated with space heaters. It snowed, no shoveling of the steps down, no salt to melt snow either. The electric was scary. The cable was out, but fixed in 2 days. The door handle lock did not work. The deadbolt did. The owner has an interior door handle on the back gate. The key does not fit properly, and froze often. The linens were 4 hour nap motel quality. Roe showed us the front apartment. It is not accurate in the pictures either. On the plus side, it was 5 minutes from our family. As nice as Roe is, We do not recommend this or his other rental. The building needs to be gutted. Their are too many safety hazards here. I didn’t read prior what my dispute options were. Shame on me. Your putting this location on your website, shame on you. The 1 star is for location. It is a great area and we felt very safe coming and going. Wish it was at least clean. I took a video of the place as I left. Really should have taken it when we arrived. Also no carbon monoxide detectors.
For future renters, you should know that we take great pride that our guests enjoy their time in the city, and that we always make ourselves accessible during their stay. I think that the vast majority of reviews for this and our other apartments attests to that. So to receive this kind of review--being so venomous in tone that it seems to connote maliciousness on our part--leaves us disheartened. But it also begs our response.
Despite acknowledging how nice Roe was, this guest did not inform him of any concerns or issues with the apartment until the day before they were scheduled to vacate after a weeklong stay. So Roe was nice, but not approachable? Had he known of the issues he would have certainly tried to address them, but any redress at that point would have been virtually worthless. And then to use this same litany of grievances to request a backdoor full refund from HomeAway/VRBO? So we are to assume that sleeping in our apartment--in a great neighborhood, near relatives--offered no benefit? Shame, indeed.
While I won't continue with a point-by-point discussion of this guest's issues, I do want to emphatically dispel their fraudulent claim that we Photoshopped the photos for our apartments. You should know that we did absolutely no editing of our photos other than to take them during the summer when it was sunny and warm. We felt that taking photos during April, when it's often 20-30 degrees colder and grayer, wouldn't have shown the apartments in their best light.
Finally, I'd like to leave you, our future guests, with the fact that the renter who occupied the apartment immediately after this aggrieved guest gave us a five -star review. And the guest one week prior also gave us a five-star review. And the vast majority of our other reviews are four- and five-star. I hope you'll see for yourselves which review is the outlier.
Thank you for indulging us in this response.
AFFORDABLE LINCOLN SQUARE
Excellent location. Well-appointed rooms. Close to grocery store. Close enough to the train. And, of course, close to lots of bars and restaurants. All accompanied by top-notch service!
Great little place in a great location.
Title says it all. Plus, the owner is super friendly and very accomodating. I absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in Chicago but doesn't want to be in the middle of the downtown craziness. Great neighborhood with lots of restaurants and bars. Great night life but also doesn't get loud or rowdy outside. Close to the Brown Line (~40 minutes to downtown). Lots of free on-street neighborhood parking. Thanks again Ro for everything!
Need working gate keys
Really need to provide working keys to the back gate as that's where guests will park. Otherwise, a perfect place for 2 in a great location!
This property is located in Lincoln Square, a neighborhood in Chicago's northside that takes pride in its richly interwoven cultures and one-of-a-kind businesses that are endearing even for a diverse city like Chicago. Specialty shops like Merz Apothecary, Ash's Magic Shop, Timeless Toys and Gene's Sausage Shop and Fine Wine Brokers are but a few memorable stops in the area. Lincoln Square is a quaint enclave within a city rich in industry, finance, arts, architecture, blues/jazz, theater and ethnic neighborhoods. Amidst the urban bustle lies Lincoln Square's quiet, tree-lined streets where both residents and visitors enjoy year-round events, shopping, food and music festivals, gourmet and casual dining, neighborhood pubs, park activities, sightseeing, farmers markets, local craft beers and festivities like Oktoberfest that draw crowds from other states and countries. Some call the area 'Little Europe' for its European-style cafes, delis and specialty stores. Over its long and rich history, Lincoln Square has been settled by waves of immigrants from Germany, Greece, Eastern Europe, Asia and Mexico who have enriched the economy and traditions of the neighborhood. Cuisines from all continents are amply represented here.
Lincoln Square is also home to the world-renowned Old Town School of Folk Music, which, since moving to the neighborhood in the late 90's, has made the area a go-to destination for dining and nightlife. Many well-known folk, world, bluegrass, jazz, blues and country musicians from all over the world perform at the Old Town School of Music. Pete Seeger, Ottman Lieber, Mahalia Jackson, John Prine, Steve Goodman, Earl Klugh and Bonnie Koloc, Rickie Lee Jones, to name a few, have held concerts there.
