About Karen Draper

We are a Colorado family who have been vacationing in Mexico for over 30 years.

We fell in love with Sayulita more than 20 years ago and were very fortunate to be able to buy our home in 2005.

We are so happy to be able to share this magical spot with people from all over the world.

Our Casa is our part time home and you will find it has everything you need to feel at home too.

Karen Draper purchased this house in 2005

Why Karen Draper chose Nayarit

Sayulita is a wonderful town and personifies all that we love about Mexico.

It is so easy to get to Puerto Vallarta from all over the US and the short drive up the coast sets the scene for the vacation experience. We always feel a thrill when we turn off HWY 200 and make our way under the Sayulita welcome palapa.

Less time is spent traveling and more time relaxing.

When we first saw the house, we saw its potential, fell in love with the views and saw a garden transformed into a lush tropical respite. We have continued to work on the house since day 1 and our frequent repeat visitors love to see what else is new.

What makes this house unique

Mexican architecture, space, privacy, the views, the pool and the wonderful town below.

Beautiful by day, extremely loud at night during President's week in Feb

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at Casa Del Cielo during President's week in February. I do not recommend this rental during that week. There is a fair called Sayulita Days going on down the hill. If you are right next to the fair its a normal amount of noise but if you are up on top of the hill staying at Casa Del Cielo, you hear EVERTHING. We could hear the bottles break in the rock throwing game (which is really fun BTW). That sound was nothing compared to the music. Up on the hill there is nothing to buffer the music. It starts just as you want to fall asleep and it goes until 2am, except for Thursday night when there was a DJ who played music so loud it rattled the windows-no joke. This DJ played from 2am to 5am. It was awful. The house is very open, which is great during the day. It is a beautiful view, the pool even has a view. There is a lovely patio next to the pool to sit at and the big open indoor patio is a great place to relax. There are many comfortable chairs and lounge chairs to relax on during the day. Then at night that architecture collects the sound from the fair and amplified it into your bedroom.

I would stay at Casa de Ciel again but not during the week of the 20th of February.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review Amy. You are right; the Sayulita Days celebration is incredibly loud, not just at our house but everywhere in town. We have neighbors who leave during that time. I am glad that you enjoyed our comfortable home and I am sorry I did not forewarn you of this yearly assault on the ears. Please come back at a different time of year. Karen.

Needs work

  • 3 of 5

stayed at villa may 13-20 house is fine but there is a problem with the sewage system one of the downstairs bath room's toilets got clogged up the first day the people in that room had no shower or toilet for two days. I called the house keepers could not get them to call I e mailed the owner and she got them to come over and fix the problem. What they found was a tree root going threw the sewage pipe Jose managed to dig it up by hand the man is a machine he did a very good job but I see more problems down the road with this. Also the upstairs bathroom I was staying in the shower handles are in really bad shape I think it would be easier to solve a Rubik's cube then get the correct water temp. What the house needs a good walk threw and fix all the little issues like the chairs outside are all rotting out we had two chairs start to break as we sat on them .If the owner would put about a few thousand into getting everything fixed I would change my review to a 4 star. Oh I forgot they are building a new house right over the back wall hammers concrete saws start at 8:00 am everyday.

Owner's Response: One of the things one learns soon after buying a vacation home in the tropics is that there is always something that needs repair. And repair we do! The sewage pipes have all been dug up and replaced within days of discovering the problem. There have been no further issues. The fabric on the chairs around the pool was replaced and they were back in service on June 13th, before this review was posted. We plan to replace the faucets soon which involves removing tile and re-plumbing some parts. It is possible to adjust the temperature with some know how and patience. The Rubic's Cube is beyond me! I am very sorry that the construction noise impacted our guest's enjoyment. It certainly takes away from the relaxation experience. We and our wonderful caretakers wish only good experiences for all of our guests and will promptly fix anything within our power to fix. Maintenance is ongoing as are small improvements we make as time and money permits. This Sayulita home is our home too, and we love it and hope to be sharing it with happy renters for years to come.

Beautiful, Spacious Villa in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Del Cielo in August 2016 and absolutely loved this house! The spacious, open living area has an incredible view of the ocean, the jungle and downtown Sayulita. We spent many nights having drinks and enjoying the spectacular view! The kitchen has all the amenities you need for cooking and entertaining and also has the great view. The 4 bedrooms (all with connecting bathrooms) were very comfortable. It was quite hot and humid during our visit in August. The house has no air conditioning but the ceiling fans in the bedrooms and throughout the house made the heat tolerable during this warmest time of the year. Also, being on top of a hill, the house gets a nice breeze which also helps. The house has a great pool which also has the ocean and downtown Sayulita views. There's nice outside shower in the pool area, which is great for rinsing off the sand when returning from the beach.

The owner of the property, Karen, is wonderful. She was very helpful in providing details about the property to make our arrival and stay go smoothly. Karen also has great suggestions about Sayulita (restaurants, shops, beaches, transportation, etc.). The property caretakers were also very nice and responsive to our needs.

We are a family of four and the house had plenty of room for us. The house can easily accommodate two families or 4 couples. The location of the house is fantastic. It's situated on a hill just outside of the downtown area which gives you peace and quiet and lots of privacy. Yet it's close enough to walk to downtown (about 1/2 mile) if you choose to do so. Going to downtown is all downhill and very easy. Coming back you'll have a steep hill to climb which is something to keep in mind, particularly when it's hot.

Overall, we loved Casa Del Cielo and look forward to returning. We recommend this house if you want the true feeling of living in a Mexican Hacienda style house, with great indoor/outside living area.

Awesome space and great sunset view!

  • 5 of 5

For my first visit to Mexico, this house was excellent choice! Loved sitting out by the pool and watching the sunset, cooling off in the pool, retired to my private room (there were 6 of us), and the quick access to the town and beach. Even the walk back up the hill was good exercise to balance out all the margaritas.

The worst parts are the heat with no A/C but the pool and room fans make it doable. You gotta keep the kitchen clean as the ants will get to anything sweet, but it was all part of the experience.

Alma and Jose were great housekeepers and a great cook!

Definitely recommend the place to anyone wanting to explore Sayulita!

Open air architecture

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this house. It's open to the air architecture brings the outside in. If you prefer riding in a convertible or riding a bike to driving in a car where you are completely insulated from the outside world, then this is your house. It is very easy to while away the day between outings on the veranda, watching the birds and feeling the breeze. It was hot while we visited in June, but the house is well designed for cross ventilation and the ceiling fans are strong. The house is well appointed with excellent taste and the caretakers were great. Alma cooked a couple of excellent meals for us to heat up at our leisure which was a highlight. There is a 150 yard steep hill with cobblestones, stairs, and uneven ground to access the house which was challenging for my 78 year old mother and caused her to venture into the town only once a day, but she had a nice place to be and still have a good experience.

Situated in the heights surrounded by palm trees and a sweeping view of the town and Bay of Sayulita

  • 5 of 5

No doubt when you arrive at Casa Del Cielo and walk along the cobble drive to the pool you say wow .What a great place for 7 of us to gather , all of us had our won room and bathroom . Casa Del Cielo is up in the heavens on a ridge that looks south towards the town and bay.We loved the location. The house features an open kitchen facing a large windowless arched veranda . This was quite a fun living experience because there are no windows hence there is a lovely flow of spaces between casual seating and dinning areas. There are two bedrooms on this level as well as the pool. Karen and George have decorated the interior with wonderful rustic painted wood panels, ceramic figures, Mexican furniture and fabrics. The tile floors glisten and the curved tera cotta tile ceilings add to the ambience. You are also in a canopy of palm trees, surrounded by colorful boganvillia.

Afternoons had us around the pool relaxing on a chaise or sitting on chairs in the pool.

Karen gave us an extensive list of places to eat locally and I highly recommend Juan on the main street below as you walk in to town with his roasted chicken, peppers and potatoes.

The house keeping was great and we were taken care of well.

A number of our party caught the bus from the airport and the bus station is very close by down the hill.

There is a strenuous but not long walk up from the town but it only takes 5 mins walk down and you are in the main town where it is a surfer, swimmers, shoppers and eaters delight .There is a great market on Fridays 5 mins from the house .

Music exudes from this town as well as the warmth of its town folk . Chickens and the occasional donkey can be heard but for the most part you are above the town noise .

I would love to return again many thanks.
