About Howard Eisler

My wife and I have been coming to the Berkshires for over 35 years. I've done some real estate, buy sell and renovate in NY Metro, Killington, VT and the Berkshires. We used to own at Lakeside Condo's for about 10 years on the same Fox Hollow estate before we went into the Ski Lodge business in Killington, VT. Now we've retired to Florida for about 7mos. a year and just had to come back to the Berkshires for the other 5 mos. We have another place in Lenox.

Howard Eisler purchased this house in 2013

Why Howard Eisler chose Berkshires

This property was just far to good. Westinghouse built the first electric house in SW Massachusetts less than a 1000 feet away. Vanderbilt bought it and built a bunch of buildings on the property for the private use of his family.. Overlooking Laurel Lake from the hill top are by far some of the best views in the area. When you talk about Berkshire locations this is about the best. Present day facilities on the premises that we have access to (no extra charges) include indoor and outdoor pools, club house, gym, tennis courts and of course 1000 feet of Lake front on Laurel Lake ready for fishing, canoeing and swimming with our own supplied boats and rafts.

What makes this house unique

This is the one of two single family unattached private home on the 220 acre Fox Hollow Estate that has ever been offered for short term rentals. This unique piece of real estate is awesome. As you take a short walk to the adjoining gardens at the Edith Wharton estate either on the horse back riding trails or by the lake route you will feel the draw that brought the Tycoons to this property. Centrally located to all Berkshire activities and wow what a vacation we have in store for you.

Great House for Parties of Eight or Less

  • 3 of 5

We booked the house for a 70th birthday celebration. Although the listing indicate a minimum of 2 nights, the owner required us to take it for 3 nights. As advertised, the kitchen was well-appointed. The central island made it easy to cook and serve meals. The dining room table seats 8 people. The laundry was convenient. The Great Room really was great. The weekend was cool and rainy so the pool table was very popular with everyone. Also, as stated in the listing, there were 2 televisions in the Great Room. We weren't there to watch television, but it provided a diversion for the kids. Had the weather been better, we would have been able to take advantage of the many outdoor activities-the hot tub, the deck, the lake and all it had to offer. It was a wonderful spot.

The downside was the lack of bedrooms. When we booked the house, the listing stated that there were 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. In actuality, there were 2 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, and a study with a trundle bed in it. With the trundle bed open, it was very crowded, particularly since there were two large plastic storage tubs taking up quite a bit of the space. The listing indicated that there was a fifth bedroom and a third bath in the lower level. Unfortunately, there was no lower level. There was evidence of a construction project (plywood panels covering the future windows) but no 5th bedroom or 3rd bathroom. As indicated, there are two sleep sofas in the great room; however, to use them would require moving furniture. Also, be advised, the great room is the only gathering place in the house so whomever sleeps there would have to stay awake until everyone else went to bed and get up as soon as anyone got up in the morning. We were short of space and embarrassed that we couldn't accommodate the people we invited to our celebration. One couple ended up paying for a room at the Red Lion Inn for the weekend. To his credit, when I called the owner to indicate that we had a problem with the space that was advertised and what we actually found at the house, he paid for a room at the Black Swan Inn that we were able to use. The listing now states that there are 4 bedrooms and 2 baths and that the 5th bedroom/lower level will be available after 6/15. We left on 6/13 and the room was a construction site. This is great spot but only comfortable for parties of 8 or less until the construction is completed.

Owner's Response: The review is basically accurate. Expected completion date of lower level is 8/1/2016. We will have sleeping capacity for 14.

Nicely maintained property in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property for an early December get together with a group of 10 friends. The home is consistent with the pictures presented here and had obviously been cleaned and prepared for our arrival. The property manager also personally checked in with us to make sure everything was in order and to answer any questions. Linens, towels and everything you could want in a kitchen were provided and in excellent shape. The surrounding area was also even nicer than I think any of us expected. All in all a great trip and a good experience. We'd definitely rent from Howard again.

NOT a 5 bedroom as promised

  • 4 of 5

When we booked the property in January it was listed as a 5 bedroom, 3 bath home with construction on the lower level to be completed by Memorial Day, so I thought it would definitely be finished by our visit at the end of August. We got no notice from the owner that the construction was not completed for our August arrival. I noticed on the website that the date was pushed back from May to Sept. The only reason we were able to fit comfortably in the existing home was that one couple dropped out. The owner should have informed us of construction delays before it was too late to book another place.

The great room, kitchen and dining area are spacious and comfortable. There are two smart TV's in the house, but they are both in the same room. One on the left side and one on the right. The only way the second TV would be useful was if you were a sport fan who watched a second game without sound. Having the smart TV was great in that we were able to access our Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts to watch movies. The hot tub was fun to have and in good working order and the deck was good for relaxing in the evening or for morning tea.

The main bedroom on the first floor (queen bed) was comfortable. The two upstairs bedrooms share a bath which was fine. They are cooled with window air conditioners, but the downstairs has central air. The fourth bedroom is a small office with a daybed. Would be fine for a child. We requested the beds upstairs be made up as kings. They just pushed the two twins together and used twin bedding so it really did not function as a king bed. The beds were comfortable.

The kitchen is new and well equipped, but the icemaker in the freezer did not work at all while we were there, nor did the wine cooler. Called to report this but no repair person ever came. We bought ice at the store.

The home is well located near Lenox and Lee. It is a short drive to all local attractions (Tanglewood, Rockwell Museum etc.)

There was a kayak, a canoe and a motorized boat for our use which was nice. The lake and dock area are about a quarter mile away-a pretty easy walk or you can drive down to the dock. Swimming at Lenox town beach is a very short drive. There is an indoor and an outdoor pool at the complex. A short walk or drive from the house. They were very nice and never seemed crowded.

Except for not having the extra bed and bath that we booked, the house was comfortable and well located

Owner's Response: The review is accurate. We have recently been advertising the house as a 4 br, 2 bath. The lower level is seriously delayed. The wine cooler has been replaced and the ice maker fixed. I'd like to thank the guests for their comments. The upper level mattresses have been upgraded even though the old ones were reported to be comfortable.

Great Place to Rent

  • 4 of 5

We rented this property for a girls weekend and while the house had everything you could want, the construction to add a bedroom and bath was delayed causing us to be a bit cramped. No notice was received from the owner that the finish date for the addition had changed and was pushed further out. Owner easy to work with, property centrally located, interior pretty much clean, windows/screens could use a good cleaning to eliminate spider webs inside the frames and house. Would recommend bringing sleeping bags or your own sheets and blankets as inventory of these items was a bit sketchy. None of these things kept us from having a great time, we used hot tub, lit a fire, went to fitness center, etc. Never heard anything back from owner on the boat lesson he offered and we requested but didn't have a lot of time to use them anyway. Would rent again once renovation is completed.

Owner's Response: I. We do many same day turnovers during the year and we have a complete set of duplicate linens and towels readily available in the house for every bed. Boating was not an option as we had snow flurries this week and the water is too cold now to be safe. The new construction has been delayed and we expect completion by Thanksgiving. Glad to know that you enjoyed our facilities, had a great time and would rent again.

Morning, noon and night you can fine tune your Berkshire vacation to whatever rocks your boat. In one week you will not be able to do it all. Below is a list of some of our favorites. The theatres such as the Berkshire Theatre Group (3), Barrington Stage theatres (2), Williamstown Theatre Festival (2) and Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center year after year deliver and just keep getting better. Shakespeare and Company is a must see (not just Shakespeare - 4). Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival has a huge seasonal assortment of traditional ballet to unreal hip-hop. Tanglewood features the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, the Tanglewood Symphony Orchestra, various chorale groups, guest performances by all genres of musicians, popular concerts by guest performers such as James Taylor. Tanglewood On Parade is my favorite night of the season. There are many afternoon performances on most schedules. The Norman Rockwell, The Clark and the Berkshire museums are worth visiting every season. Try to leave a little time for R&R and enjoy the stars and hot tub on the deck to top off a great day.
