Description

Higashiyama Townhome Rental Photos and Description

Two bedrooms, full bath, kitchen, living, sleeps 6

Sakara White Crane Machiya is a Kyoto 'machiya' townhouse with the styling and amenities you expect from Sakara, walking distance from Kyoto Subway Higashiyama Station. The location is exceptional; walking distance from the famous Chion-in temple, on a peaceful alleyway, only minutes from the subway line. There are two rooms on the second floor with designer western-style bedding as well as a living space on the first floor with an 80 cm wide sofa-bed. In addition, there is a traditional courtyard garden, bath, kitchenette, Wifi, and easy access to local restaurants. There are heaters/air conditioners with temperature control in each room to ensure your comfort year-round. In keeping with our theme, we offer 'Japanese style with western comfort' -- the doors are tall, living areas spacious, art and furnishings top-class.

The Sakara Shirakawa Machiya is a private self-contained house, rented to only one group at a time. It is a strictly non-smoking and 'shoes off' Japanese style building.

Our New Home Away From Home!

  • 5 of 5

This was definately the best accomodation in our recent visit to Japan. We stayed here for 6 nights, but could have stayed longer! It was nice to stay somewhere in Japan with room for all of us to move around (us and our 3 kids). It is in a great location to so many amazing places and was a trip we will never forget. The house really felt like a home, with all the creature comforts. Was great to have a washing machine and was really close to the station. Can't wait to come back next year!

Great location, comfortable and clean

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Sakara White Crane Machiya Townhouse. Everything was exactly as advertised, so there were definitely no unpleasant surprises. The townhouse was clean, and neat, and amenities such as towels, soaps, shampoo, etc, were all provided.

We did have a little trouble getting the taxi driver to understand the location, at first. I had forgotten to print out the Japanese directions provided in the access instructions. However, the property manager was able to give directions over the phone, and got us there. One of the staff members met us at the property, and gave us all the additional information we needed.

Because one of our party was elderly, we didn't use public transportation much, however, both the subway station and bus stop are quite close, as are several affordable restaurants serving delicious food.

We would recommend this property, and hope to stay there again on our next trip to Kyoto!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review, and we are very happy that you made the most of your time in Kyoto. For future guests, a note about addresses in Kyoto. Addresses refer to areas known as 'ku' and 'cho', but not numerically ordered street locations. This is part of the charm of an ancient city, but it can be confusing for taxi drivers and deliveries! Because houses in Kyoto are not numbered locations along named streets, it is important to print and verify the access information so that you can easily find the house. We would love to host you again if you get a chance to come to Kyoto. Safe travels!

Character and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights in February/March. The townhouse was very comfortable and well equipped for small groups. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms were a good size. The photos on the website are accurate and give a good indication of the reality. It snowed on the last night we were there which was just lovely. The position was central with a picturesque stream at the end of the lane. When we stayed there construction works were going on next door. The owner Mike let us know this before we arrived. He gave us the option of staying at Sakara instead if the noise disturbed us which we appreciated and consider to be good service. It didn't bother us because we were out during the day when the building was going on. We did have a bit of a problem with the towels, we were three people but only two towels. We let Mike know about the problem but only had two towels for the first 24 hours so my husband and I had to share a towel! I'm sure were were just unlucky with the towels but it did detract from our overall experience having to contact Mike twice before the extra towel was supplied. For those who like to stay connected the Wi-Fi is not great. It was incredibly slow to the point where it isn't worth the effort of logging on. This was not apparent to us until we arrived. Whilst we don't expect that everywhere will have a great connection to the World Wide Web we do expect forewarning that it may not be optimal.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review. Our cleaning staff is usually very reliable and I am tremendously sorry for their miscommunication and delay in getting your group an extra towel, they were unaware of the size of your group. I was out of town that day and had to rely on the cleaners to go there as soon as they could. I believe that the construction work in the building next door was the cause of the disruption in internet service, as we use the strongest 'NTT' Wifi signal available in Japan, and have not had problems with the internet in the past, besides having to re-set the router about once a year. Knowing how important it is for travelers to stay connected, we place a high priority on having wireless internet available for guests. Again, thank you for the review and we would love the opportunity to serve you or your family and friends another time if you come to Kyoto again.

Great place and great value

  • 4 of 5

This place is great. Top three things about it: 1-Location (close to several trains and buses and easy for taxis to find), 2- very well appointed (e.g., there were enough clean towels for 5 of us) and 3- very clean (this was most appreciated (e.g, air conditioner didn't blow dust out when it was switched on). The owners are helpful, responsive and speak great English.

The one note I have about this property (not in a bad way, just as an FYI) is that the steps to the top floor are somewhat steep so be attentive if you have small children or adults with mobility issues. It's too good of a place/too good of a value to strike it from your list but I would recommend being mindful of the stairs.

Very quiet and comfortable. Highly recommended.

  • 5 of 5

The directions to the house were spot on and easy to follow. Mike was very nice and arranged a cab for us a couple of times. There were 4 adults staying at the house and we were very comfortable. Kyoto is a beautiful and enjoyed our stay. We highly recommend this place.

Great base in Kyoto for a family

  • 5 of 5

We thought this was a great place to stay in Kyoto for a family (parents and two boys, 15 and 11). Well-equipped, comfortable and an excellent location - very close to the sights (buses which are easy to use can be accessed in minutes as can the nearest underground station - useful for getting to and from the main train station - and a number of top sights are within walking distance) but in a neighbourhood which has a more relaxed, local feel. The two bedrooms were especially nice (great beds) - with the second one having a double and single (so two children don't have to sleep together). Downstairs is cozy but actually more spacious than we thought it would be. Good wifi and the washer/drier was a welcome addition. We also liked the cranes in the small garden - a nice view to look out onto (even when it was pouring with rain, as it was on a couple days we were there).

We found the booking, check-in and check-out very straightforward. The map of the local area provided at check-in (when everything in the apartment was also explained to us) was also appreciated.
