Custom built English Tudor style home located on a 400 acre ranch. This secluded ranch borders Cal Poly State University property and is situated 2.3 miles from Highway 1 on a part paved/ part all-weather gravel road. The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths and sleeps 8-10 with a king, 3 queens and 2 twin beds. It has hardwood floors and granite counter tops. The kitchen is fully equipped and has an adjoining sitting area where guests can relax on a couch, enjoy the expansive view and chat with the chef while he or she prepares meals. The library is stocked with an eclectic collection of books. The home has high speed satellite internet access and good cell phone reception. There are 2 HD flat screen TV's (the downstairs TV is 47') connected to a satellite dish which provides premium channel programming. Each TV has a DVD player with a selection of titles. The living room, with its mahogany paneling, leather couches and piano arrayed before a magnificent fireplace, is reminiscent of a British gentleman's club or hunting lodge. Outside, the patio and garden have ample seating with both a wood-burning Santa Maria style bbq and conventional propane grill for your outdoor cooking experience. During the wet months, the outdoor fire pit is ideal for roasting hotdogs, marshmellos or just sitting around the fire under the stars.
Mike Kirschner, one of the owners' sons, lives in the stable building located approximately 100 yards downhill from the main house and is available to answer questions or help guests with any problems that may arise during their stay.
Guests are encouraged to bring their hiking boots and binoculars. The ranch is surrounded by rural Cal Poly property with its extensive system of dirt roads on which one can literally bike or hike for miles. For a more adventuresome and secluded experience, guests are welcome to explore the ranch itself which is home to deer, turkeys, coyotes, raptors and other native animals and birds. Those energetic enough to hike to the top of the ridge above the house will be treated to a spectacular view of Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo in the valley below and the Pacific Ocean ten miles distant.
Whether you are visiting this area to sample its world-famous wines and restaurants, to explore its pristine coastline or simply to relax and unwind, you'll be glad you selected the Stenner Creek ranch as your home away from home during your stay.

Our family has lived in San Luis Obispo since the mid- 1950's and we purchased this ranch in the early 1970's. After retiring from his medical practice, our father built his dream house on the ranch and moved there to raise British White Park Cattle. We have decided to offer the property as a vacation rental because of its unique character and ideal location near the City of SLO.
Chuck Kirschner purchased this chateau / country house in 1970
The single most striking aspect of the property is the serenity one experiences while there. The only sounds you're likely to hear are the wind in the oak trees, cawing crows, squawking bluejays, the occasional scream of a hunting red-tail hawk , maybe a coyote in the evening and the distant sound of a train as it makes its way up or down Cuesta Grade. The outside world feels very far away even though, in reality, the City of SLO is just a short five minute drive away.
Our family gathered here for my Son's 30th birthday and Easter weekend. There are three large rooms downstairs, so the grandkids could be watching a video, while we enjoyed talking in the next room and still watch them. It has a big open kitchen/dinette area and beautiful china dishes. There are two tables and plenty of chairs. I appreciated the fresh flowers on the table and the orchid stem in the kitchen window when we arrived. The fireplace was ready to light and there is a piano tuned beautifully near the fireplace. We roasted s'mores our last night outside where they have a fire pit. Everyone enjoyed the green hills and the sunset. I liked the fact that we were far away from the busy SLO downtown but that it only took ten min to drive there. We went to the Thursday night farmer's market to buy veggies and had a nice lunch at Flour House in their outside patio near the creek. It opened one yr ago and has the thin crust Italian pizza and a delicious dessert with Nutella. We hiked around the property, read outside on lounge chairs, and played games. The kids were entertained watching all the lizards outside the front door and we saw a deer, some quail, hawks and squirrels. The kitchen and bathrooms have granite counter tops and they leave you some soap, lotion, shampoo. The towels were thick and large. I never talked to or met Chuck or his son because we didn't have any problems. The kitchen has tons of pans and utensils and pantry items. We had to buy pepper though. There were 4 bikes but we didn't use them. I slept downstairs and the bed was comfortable. I like that the light switches were labeled. That helped. You may think the rooms are too dark but you need to find the right light switch to brighten it up. I loved the sconces on the walls going up the stairs and in the living room. It was a great place to gather with my three children, their spouses, and my granddaughters. The house was very roomy with ten people in it. It is definitely a place for family to gather. Thank you Chuck!
The perfect get away if your into beautiful scenery, spending time with family, and peace and quiet!!
My family stayed here for our daughters wedding at Santa margarita ranch. Absolutely beautiful. Owners were very flexible and accommodating. Very cozy beds, 3 bathrooms and fully stocked kitchen allowed us to entertain family after wedding. Beautifully furnished. Felt like a bed and breakfast. Warm and inviting.
My family rented this lovely home to surprise our Cal Poly student for her birthday. It was the perfect location - close to campus, but yet still rural enough to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The home was very clean and comfortable - plenty of space for the 8 of us, plus our dog. We saw deer and wild turkeys on the hillside in the afternoon and the large stone fireplace in the living room was perfect on the cold windy evenings. The owners made sure we had everything we needed and even set up the fireplace before our arrival so all we had to do was light the match. I believe there is a trail that connects the ranch to the cal poly campus near architecture graveyard, but we didn't get a chance to explore that this time. I highly recommend this vacation home especially for families with students at Cal Poly!
My family and I had a fantastic stay here over the Christmas holiday. Chuck and family had set up a Christmas tree for us which was so sweet and indicative of the beautiful and thoughtful touches throughout the home. It's akin to staying in a homey hunting lodge in England...but with vistas similar to Tuscany. The huge fireplace was a showstopper and there was plenty of firewood and kindling for us to use so we could have a fire every night. The grounds were gorgeous and every window has a beautiful view. Great bathtub in the guest/downstairs bedroom for soaking after a long hike or walk on nearby beach. Was a terrific spot to have our dog - he was wiped out every day from long walks on the property/hillside and also the beach. We cooked some great meals and enjoyed the library, books and games. Didn't have any issues, but communication with Chuck was very good before/after our stay. If you're looking for a place that feels like you've really gone somewhere (and yet, only 7 minute drive to drugstore/grocery/food) to relax with family or friends, this is it! Can't recommend highly enough.
This is a beautiful and comfortable home. It is wonderfully private and peaceful, and well suited to entertaining, in that you will want to cook and socialize with your group right where you are staying. Although it is a mile or so up a country road, partly dirt, the road is well maintained and the minor inconvenience is more than made-up for by the amazingly beautiful and quiet location. We used it as a base for the bride's family during her wedding weekend, and it was perfect. This home feels like a home, not a rental. Chuck is great and his son is minutes away in case you have any question. The bathroom configuration is a bit odd, but did not end up being a big deal at all. You will like this place.
