Overview

About the property

2 Bedroom House, Sleeps 4, With View Of Howth Harbor And Ireland's Eye

Our charming 110-year old 2-bedroomed home, bright, welcoming and beautifully renovated, sits above the village of Howth, overlooking Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye, the iconic island outside the harbor, just 9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth is the scenic and recreational jewel of the Dublin area, sitting in a hilly peninsula on the north side of Dublin Bay with stunning views of the bay to the south and the coast line to the north. The harbor, with its two popular piers, includes a working fishing port as well as a large marina, and is an important sailing venue. The peninsula has a wide array of wonderful scenic walking paths over the hills and around the cliffs, and is popular with birdwatchers.

Our house was built in 1905 but has been extended and totally renovated, and includes all modern amenities. It is bright and fresh, with 2 bedrooms that can comfortably sleep 4 people, full bathroom, living room and a bright fully-fitted kitchen / dining room overlooking the garden. Total floor area is approx 1,000 sq ft. The garden includes a deck / patio and offers views of Howth Harbor and Ireland’s Eye. The front of the house has 2 parking spaces.

The house is 300 yards from Howth Village, including shops, church and bus service to the center of Dublin; 0.4 miles from Howth Harbour; 0.7 miles (12 minute walk) from the DART rapid transit rail station serving the center of Dublin and southern areas of the city; and 8.9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth has 2 fine golf courses, numerous excellent restaurants, and the 15th century Howth Castle which includes its famed wild rhododendron gardens, which are open to the public in summer, and the National Transport Museum of Ireland. As can be expected in a fishing port, many of the restaurants are particularly noted for fine seafood. Howth also has several well-known pubs, including the Abbey Tavern, which is renowned nationally for Irish folk and traditional music, and is only 5 minutes’ walk from our house.

All this within 20 minutes of the center of Dublin!

About Peter and Jane Ahern

We are Peter and Jane Ahern. We both grew up and were educated in Ireland. We met when we both worked for the Irish government’s Industrial Development Authority (IDA Ireland), and got married in Dublin. Soon after that, we moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where we have lived for many winters! Our two children live and work in the Cleveland area but, from numerous visits though their lifetimes, they both know every inch of the Howth peninsula!

Peter and Jane Ahern purchased this house in 2003

Why Peter and Jane Ahern chose Dublin Northside

Jane grew up on the Howth peninsula and her mother and brothers still live there. Over our years in the US we have spent many wonderful vacations there with family and friends, enjoying the spectacular scenery and great social life. It was our dream to find a house in Howth, and when we learned that 1 Balglass Road was for sale in 2003, Peter made a quick trip to Ireland and, after a few quick phone calls with Jane back in Cleveland, immediately bought it. It was perfect!

What makes this house unique

Our Irish home is full of character, over 100 years old but with every modern amenity, in a quiet street, but still within a short walk of all of the attractions of Howth Village and Howth Harbour with their restaurants, pubs, Yacht Club, shops, pier walks and marina.

Cozy home with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at Peter and Jane's property on Howth. It was so beautiful and welcoming. Staying on the fishing peninsula made our visit to Ireland all the more better, you can see the boats and hear the seagulls. All the little shops and restaurants were delicious and inviting, we never met a stranger! The booklet Jane and Peter left that had information about the house and the area was perfect and so very helpful! We wish we could have stayed longer, but when we come back we will definitely be staying at this property! We loved every minute of it.

Great home! Great location!!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home located in Houth which is an easy access to downtown Dublin! Houth itself is incredibly beautiful with great shops, pubs, restaurant and waterfront parks. And the house is located across the street from the best hiking trail, The Cliff Walk. Book it, you'll love it❤️👍👌

Charming

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at 1 Balglass Rd, Howth. The traditional Irish cottage is throughly modern, bright and warm inside. It contained everything we required and made our holiday. It was great eating breakfast with a view of the sea. The location was perfect with a lovely deli, florist, wine shop, boutiques, butchers, coffees shops just down the road. Howth is a great base to explore the Dublin area on a beautiful coast.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review Kevin! I agree with you about Howth - it's quite something to have that village 'feel' so close to a major city. I am very glad you and Peggy enjoyed the house, and I hope you can return for a longer stay in the future. Best regards Peter and Jane

Lovely upgraded cottage in Houth!

  • 4 of 5

This cottage has been renovated overtime - we appreciated the open, modern kitchen & bathroom. This made it cozy especially in the days when the weather was not inviting us to go outside. Location is very good if you don't mind walking up the hill (which we enjoyed). The double bed was too small for us to share (we are used to wider beds) - and as the one who slept in it, I can attest to this bed being very comfortable, which I so appreciated! It is nice that this cottage has two bedrooms.

Owners were very attentive/friendly in their communication and the manual with information about the area is super complete.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cottage in Howth. The kitchen area is nice and large and well equipped. We enjoyed sitting in it and relaxing. The rest of the place was quite spacious as well. The bed was VERY comfortable. The other furnishings were comfortable too. Howth is a charming town and we enjoyed not driving and using the trains instead. Our favorite foods were the Bloody Stream (great fish and chips) and The House where we loved their risotto. Fresh fish was typical. The only con might be that the bathroom doesn't have its own heat source so at times it felt a little cold. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you Peter and Jane.
