Dublin Northside House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom House, Sleeps 4, With View Of Howth Harbor And Ireland's Eye

Our charming 110-year old 2-bedroomed home, bright, welcoming and beautifully renovated, sits above the village of Howth, overlooking Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye, the iconic island outside the harbor, just 9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth is the scenic and recreational jewel of the Dublin area, sitting in a hilly peninsula on the north side of Dublin Bay with stunning views of the bay to the south and the coast line to the north. The harbor, with its two popular piers, includes a working fishing port as well as a large marina, and is an important sailing venue. The peninsula has a wide array of wonderful scenic walking paths over the hills and around the cliffs, and is popular with birdwatchers.

Our house was built in 1905 but has been extended and totally renovated, and includes all modern amenities. It is bright and fresh, with 2 bedrooms that can comfortably sleep 4 people, full bathroom, living room and a bright fully-fitted kitchen / dining room overlooking the garden. Total floor area is approx 1,000 sq ft. The garden includes a deck / patio and offers views of Howth Harbor and Ireland’s Eye. The front of the house has 2 parking spaces.

The house is 300 yards from Howth Village, including shops, church and bus service to the center of Dublin; 0.4 miles from Howth Harbour; 0.7 miles (12 minute walk) from the DART rapid transit rail station serving the center of Dublin and southern areas of the city; and 8.9 miles from Dublin city center.

Howth has 2 fine golf courses, numerous excellent restaurants, and the 15th century Howth Castle which includes its famed wild rhododendron gardens, which are open to the public in summer, and the National Transport Museum of Ireland. As can be expected in a fishing port, many of the restaurants are particularly noted for fine seafood. Howth also has several well-known pubs, including the Abbey Tavern, which is renowned nationally for Irish folk and traditional music, and is only 5 minutes’ walk from our house.

All this within 20 minutes of the center of Dublin!

About Peter and Jane Ahern

We are Peter and Jane Ahern. We both grew up and were educated in Ireland. We met when we both worked for the Irish government’s Industrial Development Authority (IDA Ireland), and got married in Dublin. Soon after that, we moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where we have lived for many winters! Our two children live and work in the Cleveland area but, from numerous visits though their lifetimes, they both know every inch of the Howth peninsula!

Peter and Jane Ahern purchased this house in 2003

Why Peter and Jane Ahern chose Dublin

Jane grew up on the Howth peninsula and her mother and brothers still live there. Over our years in the US we have spent many wonderful vacations there with family and friends, enjoying the spectacular scenery and great social life. It was our dream to find a house in Howth, and when we learned that 1 Balglass Road was for sale in 2003, Peter made a quick trip to Ireland and, after a few quick phone calls with Jane back in Cleveland, immediately bought it. It was perfect!

What makes this house unique

Our Irish home is full of character, over 100 years old but with every modern amenity, in a quiet street, but still within a short walk of all of the attractions of Howth Village and Howth Harbour with their restaurants, pubs, Yacht Club, shops, pier walks and marina.

Great retreat close to but away from busy Dublin

  • 5 of 5

We loved our sweet little home away from home. It was comfortable, located right in Howth village so walking distance to restaurants markets pubs, etc, had everything we needed to pack lightly and were able to get out to explore the countryside without the Dublin traffic. The owners were so easy to communicate with and have great advice. The kitchen was well equipped we cooked a couple dinners and one breakfast. There are two markets very close the smaller has a wonderful tea house upstairs with great vegetarian selections. The locals we met were really friendly and gave us great suggestions. I would highly recommend staying here.

We stayed in this beautiful cottage 8 days in August. We ( two adults and one 8 years old girl) are from Spain.

This house is fantastic and comfortable. It has all the amenities we needed. There are a lot of brochures of Ireland. They are very useful.

Howth is a charming village. We like walking and Howth has beautiful paths and amazing cliffs.

We had a fantastic holidays in Irland.

Thanks Peter & Jane.

fantastic house, beautifully kept and great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Howth with our two young children. The cottage was so well presented, very clean and felt homely as well as being child friendly with a high chair, cot and a great bathroom. So central for shops and eats. A short drive from Malahide and also Dublin not too far away there was plenty to do. Fantastic Deli down the hill. Peter and Jane kept in touch in the run up to us going and provided a fantastic info booklet on the house and area, which made it all very easy. Would love to go back, highly recommend.

We (4 adults) stayed here in July and had a wonderful time. Howth is a charming village and a wonderful base for exploring the Dublin area, and this house was great. Peter was so helpful with planning how to get to Howth and around (we didn't have a car, so he had excellent advice about the DART, buses, and when to take a taxi!). The house was very clean and the beds were comfortable. We had one small issue while we were there (a slow drain in the shower), and they fixed it right away and followed up to make sure all was well - great service! While not a large house, the layout and windows are great, so it feels light and airy, and comfortably housed the 4 of us for a week. Having the backyard and deck was fantastic for meals and just feeling like you had your own little place to relax in. Excellent value for money, and just great all around.

Owner's Response: Amy, thank you so much for your review. You and your husband and your parents were very adventurous with all your travels around Dublin and Ireland, and I'm so glad it all went so well. One of the things we have really liked about our house is that public transport and all of the shopping, dining and recreation one needs are so good and accessible. Your review has whetted my appetite for our next visit! Best regards Peter
