|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Want to get away from the hectic life? Head to the Britton House in beautiful Highlands, N.C. Nestled at the end of a quiet street, this mountain home is meant for relaxing. Whether you are drinking coffee and admiring the morning sunrise from a front porch rocker, or grilling on the deck and watching a spectacular sunset, this is the place for you. The Britton House features a great room with spectacular views where you can sit by the fire, read a book, or do a puzzle. And if you want to be connected to the outside world, we have Internet and three cable tv's. The master bedroom has unimpeded views of the Blue Ridge mountains. The guest room features two twin beds and a pac-n-play portable bed for a baby. The couch in the great room converts to a queen sleeper bed. You'll love the rhododendrum and wildflowers in the summer and gorgeous leaves in the autumn.
The Britton House is an easy 10- to 15-minute walk into town, where you can enjoy lovely boutiques, art galleries, and restuarants. And there are plenty of hiking trails nearby, as well as fishing, white-water rafting, and panning for gems. Come, escape the heat, and revel in the beauty of the Blue Ridge.
Everything has been thought of to make our stay enjoyable. We came to escape the heat and the weather has cooperated. Such a lovely spot for a cottage nestled on a hillside. We hope to return.
Can you bring teens, tots, seniors and the sandwhich generation together for fun in one place? We did! This home is simple, warm and classic with a big living room that opens onto a deck with a perfect view of the mountains at sunset. There is a dining room for six, but we squeezed in nine for a candlelight dinner, and could have had many more if we had set up the extra tables in the closet. The house is very well equipped for table events; card games, crafting, scrap-booking, meals, showers, packing Christmas-child boxes, or make-overs & Mary Kay parties. ( I would recommend it for a retreat or mom escape weekend, but we brought kids & introduced them all to Trivial Pursuit! )
There is a lovely working fireplace and a sense of calm and connection with nature. The walls are wood paneled and there is a lot of natural light. There are two bathrooms and two bedrooms, but also a fold out sofa and roll-away bed & pack 'n play. If you are fittness folks, downtown is an easy morning run, so you can jog out for your morning cup of coffee at Bucks. Next time I would like to come for a longer stretch and get more outdoor time in the beautiful woods, but even if you're a homebody and an introvert, the house is a lovely escape from noise and frenzy.
We recently spent a week at the Britton House to celebrate our first anniversary. What a good choice! It was very comfortable and cozy, with everything we needed for a great stay. The house is close to town, which so many rentals are not. It is a comfortable walk away or a short car ride to all the shops and restaurants in downtown Highlands. There were several brochures in the coffee table drawer to help us decide what fun things to do or where to eat. Our 2 favorites were "On the Verandah" and Madison's. And the view from the balcony - what can I say?? We were mesmerized each evening as we watched the sun go down! We will definitely be back :-)
Highlands, North Carolina is a place nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has been called, "the crown jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains." Sitting on the Britton House porch and observing evening sunsets gives this a 5 star in itself. All the other amenities listed in other comments are the add ons.
The Britton House location gives the occupant the advantage to watch the unfolding of God"s creativity before your eyes as the sun sets over the mountains. Here you have the time to reflect what is truly God's masterpiece. The calmness away from the city's pace makes the Britton House a place of retreat. It is a place well spent of respite and relaxation.
We had a delightful week here. The owners obviously took great care in providing all the amenities one could want and many more we didn't imagine, such as a telescope to view the mountains. The kitchen lacked nothing, not even napkins, paper towels, grilling spices, etc. There is not a single thing we needed to get from the store except food, whether we made a fancy dinner or prepared a picnic. The view from the huge balcony is awesome, miles of mountain ridges rolling off into the distance. The king-sized bed was just firm enough, and the bedrooms also have a great view of the mountains. The kids loved their twin beds. The decor is rustic and country style but clean as a whistle, and every device, whether a blender or a dehumidifier, worked perfectly. I can confirm what other reviewers wrote. The town and nearby areas are filled with interesting and fun things to do. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat. Our time was restful and fun and the week seemed to fly by.
My husband and I stayed at Britton House in late June 2013. We just loved it. It is not a cottage but a small house, but with plenty of public space. We liked the mix of furnishings, the very comfortable king sized bed, the nice strong shower in the master bath, and many of the small touches - like how the lime green on the towels in the front bath contrasts nicely with the pale grey tile. The kitchen is large and had everything we needed to cook our meals. The gas grill was also well-used! We could not quite bear to be completely off the grid, so we also appreciated the wireless internet.
When you open the front door, the first thing you see is the view - out the sliding back doors of the house - which is pictured above. We ate all of our meals out on the deck, enjoying the breeze and the quiet. Watching a storm come over the mountains is fabulous - and then the steam rising from the trees afterward is just as beautiful. Even in late June, it was sometimes too chilly in the morning to have coffee on the deck, unless you were wearing a fleece jacket or sweater.
Combined with many things to do locally (we loved how there were so many waterfalls - some right next to the road!), a cute town to browse through (it's just a half mile walk from the house), and some great restaurants - this home is just right for a family needing to get away from it all but not needing to break the bank. We'll be back!
What a joy it was to stay in Britton House again this year! Last summer, it was the perfect homebase for an active family reunion. From there we explored the many treasures of Highlands and the surrounding area. This year, my husband and I returned for a bit of quiet time alone. This peaceful house was just right for walks, naps, tea on the deck and spectacular views of the nighttime sky. With comfortable beds, welcoming living spaces and a well appointed kitchen,the house has everything we hoped for. Britton House provides all the comforts of home in a resort setting. We will definitely return, and recommend this beautiful house!
