Sitting back 100 feet off the Atlantic Ocean, Dragonwood Castle offers 200 feet of water frontage with glorious sunset reflections across the bay onto the Prospect Harbor lighthouse. Inside its 2,100 square-feet are 3 decorative levels of living space, plus a small turret that overlooks the ocean with clear open views. With 3 bedrooms, a den, and 2.5 bathrooms, this property offers so much more than just comfortable sleeping accommodations, from delightful reading and napping alcoves to plush lounging sofas and 3-story windows, from which you and your travel companions can have fun spying on the bald eagles that have taken up residence nearby. You might also find yourself fascinated by the dioramas in several of the windows, depicting medieval scenes with castles, dragons, and the like.
As you approach the drawbridge-like wooden walkway that leads to the front door, you’ll notice that this whimsical yet solid 12-sided house is built of natural local materials, including hand split shakes, and rough-honed granite, which was used to make the full-story non-working fireplace, shower stall in the main floor bathroom, as well as a large supporting column in the center of the home. One flight up the stair tower will take you to the 2 loft-style bedrooms, one of which boasts a queen-sized bed, double futon, and crib. The other half of this loft area, accessed either through the previous bedroom or through the shared full bathroom and laundry room, contains 2 twin beds and 1 sleeping alcove. Each of these accommodations offer fabulous views to the exterior through 3-story windows, as well as over-the-railing views of the interior down to the lower level television and lounging area. You’ll find the home’s third floor is one large airy, and open bedroom featuring a king-sized bed, toddler bed, and half bath. It also has access to a cozy exterior balcony with lovely water views. This is also where one can access the turret, which also boasts expansive views.
While the house is cozy and comfortable, you’ll quickly discover that there are many things to see and do once you head out. Enjoy taking leisurely strolls around the nearby walking loop through the woods, or wander down to the beach, where you’ll find great spots for kayaking and swimming. The cove is protected by a granite ridge, making the rocks smooth and the water calmer and warmer, yet still Maine-like. Other highlights near Dragonwood Castle worth checking out include the Schoodic Arts Festival, performances at Hammond Hall Performing Arts Center, the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival, Schoodic Acadia National Park, the Grindstone Neck Public 9-hole Golf Course, and the International Sculpture Symposium, where you can visit the outdoor studio and watch the artists as they sculpt. However you choose to spend your time during your stay, this is one vacation you won’t forget anytime soon!

Wonderful vacation experience! Gorgeous location, beautifully crafted, well stocked, comfortable home with intricate detail everywhere you look. The owner was very accommodating and helpful, reaching out to me with suggestions of things to do in the area once I told her what our interests were. And the deer grazing on apples in the back yard every morning made it even more special! Looking forward to future visits.
Dragonwood castle is a magical place and we enjoyed our stay very much. The location and view were spectacular as described. You awake to see the sunrise over the water from the third floor bedroom and listen to the waves as you fall asleep. We enjoyed launching our kayak from the front yard. The second floor is more like one big room with a double bed and crib on one half and two twins and a reading/nap nook in the other half. There is not the privacy of two separate bedrooms. Nearby restaurants close by 7 (and stop serving earlier); a late dinner requires a drive -- 30 minutes to Ellsworth or about an hour to Bar Harbor. The kitchen is clean and well stocked, although the spices are old and have lost their piquancy. The house is very clean although there is a musty smell, which adds to the "castle" ambiance, and a few spiderwebs in hard-to-reach places. We would definitely stay here again. It's a great value for the price.
Upon entering the house we got an overwhelming old musty smell. It had a old camp feel not a ocean front home like the pictures showed. The property was very dated with old dirty furniture.
The kitchen was big & well equipped. There was no dining/kitchen table so we had to always sit a the kitchen counter.
I looked around for towels to shower with & found them in the dryer. So I folded a big load of towels from the previous renters & also had to unload the dish washer so I could use it.
It's in a very quiet area. Although if Bar Harbor is your destination place it's a good hour drive to get there.
Blinds would of been nice in the bedrooms cause when the sun comes up it shines right in your face. Good thing we are early risers.
The property has uniqueness for sure.
We had a wonderful stay in this curious and amusing house. The top floor was a great intimate place for my parents celebrating my dad's birthday, and the rest of the house provided several comfortable spots for the rest of us. The view and acess into the see is fantastic - private and beautiful. The yard provides ample space to play with kids, eat with family and relax. Amenities close-by -scoodic peninsula to cycle, tunk pond and scoodic mountain, acadia park, fisherman villages, are beautiful and not crowded. I highly recommand it!!
If you are looking for a laid back place to stay close to the coast, close enough to a larger city, and plenty of beauty very close by this home is for you. If you require peace and quiet there is solace to be found here. This home is perfect for 7-8 people, plenty of room to sleep and eat. Kitchen is large and well laid out as well as well stocked for cooking whatever you choose. There is a resident rabbit and we were able to enjoy watching not only the sea birds but a hen turkey with her young. We would return to this home that would be a fun place for kids! So much to see just in the house itself, little hidden treasures in the walls and ceiling, a perfect little castle to explore. We really enjoyed our stay!!
House was amazing. Very unique and fun. Everything you could want inside. Clean comfortable.
Nature at it's best. Only negative, no outdoor seating of any kind. No chairs to relax, read a book and enjoy the nature. No table to have lunch or sit at.
