Our dream house sits high in the mountains that rise on both sides of the Delaware River and the Delaware Water Gap National Park. It was originally built in 1790 as a one-room farm of which the original fireplace still sits in the middle of our living room, surrounded by hand-hewn beams and posts. Since then rooms have been added and the last piece, 3000 sq. ft, was built by us in 2006. The main floor is all open plan with a living area, an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and entry hall in the new part and a dining room and living room in the old part. Four French doors and one large folding door open up to the wrap around porch that overlooks the Vandermark stream. The home is well equipped and furnished since it is our home for part of the year. Upstairs are four bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large terrace and his and hers marble bathrooms. Her bathroom has a greenhouse double bath with a view to the stars. The house sits back from a quiet road and is surrounded by 10 private acres, which adjoin national forest in the back of the property. It has been in published in architecture and design publications. The town of Milford is 5 minutes down the hill and is known for Grey Towers and other historic buildings, the Hotel Fauchere with two gourmet restaurants, the Waterwheel Cafe and the Dimmick Inn. Milford sits in the Delaware Water Gap National park, with a beach on the Delaware River, Waterfalls and miles of trails for walking, horse riding and cross country biking. Canoes and rafts can be rented nearby, and we have a kayak and a canoe in the barn. The town has many antique and other shops like bike rentals, sporting gear, trendy home stuff and fashion. See the website of the Hotel Fauchere for excellent videos of the area! Milford is only 90 minutes or 80 miles from New York City and is a popular weekend escape destination for New Yorkers but it has not been discovered in a way that has spoiled the town. The natural beauty of the Upper Delaware is perfect for getaways during all seasons. In the summer there are numerous outdoor sports and activities, in the fall the foliage is as good if not better than New England, the winter is great for skiing with many nearby (30 mins) ski resorts, the spring is great for weekend getaways from nearby cities The local train station is Port Jervis and is 20 minutes away. The nearest airport is Newburgh, serviced by Jetblue.
This home is in a lovely, secluded location, but less than five minutes from the town of Milford. The home is a blend of modern and colonial, with a very nice kitchen and beautiful views across the property to a small stream. Large decks on two floors are fantastic. Many walking trails in Deleware Water Gap less than 10 minutes away. The owner was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property to others.
The house is absolutely gorgeous. The old side of the house has a lot of charm and character, while the modern addition has sweeping floor to ceiling / wall to wall windows with a view into a wooded area. The outdoor area is incredibly relaxing and feels very secluded overlooking a more heavily wooded area away from the road. Sitting there, it was hard to stay awake reading with the noise of the brook right below you. The open floor plan and glass curtains make the house feel extremely large, even if you're primarily sticking to the modern side of the house.
The upstairs and bedroom area was spacious. The master bedroom has two bathrooms, one of which has a shower that feels like you're in a greenhouse. The master has more wall to wall, floor to ceiling views and an expansive balcony. We did not use this space as much as it only had one chair, and there were plenty of other places to be outdoors. The stars at night were beautiful.
The bottom floor is primarily an art/design/work space, which we did not use other than to access the backyard. The house is so large you certainly do not need this floor for any practical use as a guest.
One of the other bedrooms was also very charming and I would have had no concerns with friends or family staying in this room. The other two bedrooms (total of 4BR) are on the older side in terms of style (e.g. high pile red carpet, one of which needs a good professional cleaning), but still spacious, clean, and more than usable if you are a larger crowd.
Barbara was great about communicating everything from access, wifi, local events and to-dos. Everything was seamless from start to finish.
Milford itself is a cute town - a few good shops and several restaurants, delis, bars, bakeries to choose from. More than enough for an enjoyable getaway. The house is a 5 minute drive into the main part of town, which felt like the perfect distance to feel very remote while still having access to good coffee and supermarkets - if you're the city type, you don't have to over-plan your getaway beforehand. Being in the Delaware Water Gap, the location is great for hiking, kayaking, exploring the park, or relaxing at Milford beach. We spent time over Labor Day Weekend and I was pleasantly surprised how relatively empty the hiking trails were. They were also very well maintained generally, which is great for beginner or moderate hikers.
We really loved staying at the house and hope to do so again in the fall.
Magnificent home. Clearly made with love by people who know architecture and design. Spacious, peaceful and serene.
Large wrap around porch. Many a comfortable place to sit. Babbling brook below.
The "old" part of the home is quaint and cozy. Beautiful old fireplace (we did not use b/c it was in the high 80s during our stay). Comfortable couches for curling up & reading. The "new" part of the home is amazing. Stunning wood floors, floor to ceiling windows, accordion door that opens to porch. Honestly feels like you are outside. Large kitchen with everything you would need.
Master bedroom also has floor to celling windows and opens up to a large balcony. Same babbling brook below. Sleep with the screen door open and hear the brook all night! The master bath with the tub was our favorite part. Kids loved bathing beneath the stars!
Home is secluded and private. Only the sounds of nature.
Home is just 2 miles outside Milford - easy drive down the hill. But 2 miles is far enough out that you feel in the middle of nowhere. Best of both worlds! Close to Delaware Water Gap waterfalls & Mt Tammany (we hiked and saw 4 black bears!).
Barbara was very responsive and easy to communicate with. We texted mostly and she always got back to us quickly.
If we ever go back to this area, we will ALWAYS try to stay here.
-design of the home - immaculate details at every turn
-master bath tub
