|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
This lakefront (lake surround) contemporary log cabin home allows you to get away from it all while still having all the conveniences of home. The open concept of the living/dining and kitchen is perfect for family get-togethers. The kitchen is fully equipped with stove/oven, refrigerator, D/W, blender, coffee maker, microwave and toaster. The open dining area has a large wood table with seating for at least 8.
There are 4 Bedrooms on the lower level with 2 separate sleeping wings which allow for privacy. The corner Master has an ensuite bath and gorgeous lake views and access to the deck. The 2nd bedroom next door is cozy with a sleigh bed and antique furnishings. The other bedroom wing contains the sunny corner bedroom with queen bed and water views. The kids room has two twin beds. There is also a full bath with tub/shower on this side of the house. All the rooms have linens and colorful quilts. The upper level has an open sleep loft which has a king sized bed.
In the living room there is cable TV, DVD, Wi-Fi and plenty of books and board games. The center piece of the room is the hand-picked stone fireplace and wood-beamed cathedral ceilings. Unfortunately we are not permitted to use the fireplace. The cathedral ceilings and glass bring a lot of light into the house.
In front of the house facing the lake, the huge deck runs the expanse of the house. There is a gas grill and patio furniture. We have the perfect view to enjoy the sunrise in the morning. We also have an observation deck on a rock that juts over the water. It has been a lucky fishing spot for some!
We share a small beach with the neighboring house. It is a nice place to take small children to make sand castles or play in the water. There is deep water in front of the house which is perfect for swimming. There are two kayaks which can be used. We also have many floating chairs, blow up rafts and other beach toys.
This house will not include a boat for access so it will be necessary to either rent or bring your own. There are reasonable boat rentals available at Thompson Lake Marina. They also have a boat launch and slips available for rent. You can also rent jet skis, sail boards, pontoon & speed boats and all sorts of equipment for tubing. We always enjoy renting from them and tubing or going out for a sunset cruise.
This clear spring-fed lake makes an ideal place for swimming, boating, water skiing, paddle boarding, sailing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking. Its deep clear water, many lagoons and coves makes it favorite location for fishermen. Thompson Lake is one the cleanest most serene lakes in all of Maine. Birch Island is a unique and beautiful setting where you can relax and enjoy the views of the lake and even on a clear day, Mount Washington.
Listen to the loons, see turtles in the lagoon or possibly spot an eagle. During the July 4th, enjoy the fireworks on the lake and in the distance, from Oxford Speedway. On the mainland there are dirt roads which are fun for mountain bikes.
For parking, we have 2 parking spots on the mainland and dock for 1 boat. On the island, we have a dock which can fit two average sized boats.
This is my families summer home. I grew up in New England and have spent every summer since I was a small child on Thompson Lake. I now have children and we have wonderful memories of Birch Island and this lake.
Susan Wires purchased this cabin in 1978
The island was my mother's dream. She bought the island and deigned and built the house. It was quite an undertaking moving the heavy logs over the ice in the winter and running electricity under water! But the end result was a stunning setting and beautiful home...truly unique. It is peaceful and serene and makes for a wonderful get-away from it all. But with the water activities, it is also a fun place for the family. We have very happy memories in this house!
The house has a lot of character starting with the log-cabin A-frame design. The cathedral ceilings with glassed frontage bring tons of natural light and expanse. The center of the home housing a massive hand-picked stone fireplace. The views of the water are all around...the setting doesn't get any better then this!
The property is wooded with many wild blue berry bushes for the picking. You can get plenty of sun but also nicely shaded.
We love Birch Island, Thompson Lake and this house. It's got everything we could ever hope to have in a rental house for the grandparents, parents and little children. We will surely be heading back there next summer for another week on the lake.
A well-appointed, beautiful, and private home with gorgeous views from front and back. We had grandparents and children with us, and the house was the perfect size for everyone to spread out but still be cozy. The island was covered with blueberry bushes in peak season, and we spent many mornings picking them for pancakes. The kids caught some fish, we all enjoyed tubing and swimming, as well as kayaking and canoeing. We could easily have stayed the whole summer! Fabulous vacation and we'd love to come back. It was surprisingly easy to rent a pontoon boat and get to and from shore. I'm so glad we didn't let the island factor deter us. Thanks for a great week!
This was our first family vacation on an island, so we were a little worried about the travel. However, the owners provided move-in and move-out information and videos which were very helpful in getting there efficiently. The cabin was very well equipped and nicely furnished. There were stunning views on both sides of the house. Lot's of wildlife sightings from assorted birds passing by the island to even a beaver at the dock! We had a great experience and would recommend this property to friends and family looking to relax and get away from it all!
This house on this island in this lake is about as good as any of us could imagine. We had a hot and sunny week in August to enjoy swimming, kayaking, grilling and eating out on the deck. The grandkids (ages 5 and 21 months) had a ball and as long as we kept them in their life jackets they could run around freely between dock and beach. The house is large, beautifully and comfortably furnished and well supplied: plenty of good pots, pans, dishes, cooking tools in the kitchen, lots of games and toys for the kids, nice linens and pillows on the beds, new bath towels and a pile of well used and perfect beach towels (new ones make you worry about dirt so we prefer the obviously used ones).
Access to the island requires a boat which we rented from Thompson Lake Marina, a very friendly outfit at the near end of the lake. Picking up the boat, parking the cars, getting out stuff to the island and getting inside the house seemed complicated as we thought about it all from afar but everything turned out to be very easy. The pontoon boat we rented was super. Lots of room, quiet motor yet powerful enough to tow a tube, a nice ladder so you could swim off it, a canopy so you could be out of the sun or rain, perfect for fishing.
We had a wonderful and very relaxing week. Left the lake only once (to get a few groceries) and otherwise stayed put in our little paradise.
Thinking we'd like to make this a yearly tradition.

If you wish to do some day trips or other activities on the main-land here are some suggestions:
For the avid golfer, Point Sebago Golf Resort, Poland Springs Golf, Summit Golf Course and Fairlawn Golf & Country Club are located within 20-30 minutes.
If you are looking for a short excursion off the island, the Causeway in Naples is a fun destination only 20-30 minutes away. There are a number of good restaurants, pubs, shops and good antique stores. It is also a favorite with families for miniature golf and ice cream. You can also rent jet skis or a boat for the day. Or take a ride on Long lake down the Songo River and through the Songo Locks on the Songo River Queen Paddle Boat.
Closer by about 15 minutes, you can pick up excellent sandwiches, fries and ice cream treats at Pears in Casco.
For the nostalgic, check out Bridgton Twin Drive-In which features 2 movies screens during the summer season. This is about 12 miles away.
We are about 10 minutes to the new Oxford Speedway and Casino and Fun Park. There is also Seacoast Adventure Park in nearby Windham which has the longest zip line trail in Maine. They also have go-karts, miniature golf, bumper boats, a ferris wheel and thrilling sky swing.
For longer exclusions, we are located 45 minutes to Portland where you can visit the art museums, go shopping, whale watching or enjoy local New England food such as clam chowder and lobster. For all shopaholics, Freeport is about an hour away where the original LL Bean and the famous Premium Outlets are located.
If you happen to be around for the last weekend of July, be sure to check out Casco Days. The town of Casco has a wonderful festival with a children's parade. It is in its 79th year!
