Why Rick Mullen chose Palm Beach Estates

It took more than 5 years of exploring, comparing homes and locations in Costa Rica to find the perfect place to spend an annual escape from winter. Simple living, good neighbors, a beach home close to both surf and swimming pool, air conditioning and outdoor living, solid construction, open living, cleanliness and comfort without fussy.

We look forward to sharing this tropical escape with you.

Amazing, Perfect, Wonderful, Stunning... Shall I go on??

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this wonderful bungalow for a week with my Fiance and another couple. The bungalow was absolutely perfect. It blew our expectations out of the water. It had everything we needed AND MORE. The bungalow was clean, tidy, well-kept, and in a perfect location. We were able to walk to the beach within 2 minutes and had the pool all to ourselves. It was nice to have the option of the pool and beach and do both in one day! The bungalow's kitchen was extremely clean and fully equipt, we were able to cook meals (and make pina coladas) in the house. The bedrooms both had huge beds and A/C (which was a wonderful surprise). The owners were extremely friendly and welcomed us upon arrival. They were very accessible whenever we needed anything and were around to answer any questions or give us suggestions on where to eat and visit. The area is quiet, safe, and close to many amazing resturants. We will DEFINITELY be staying here again and would recommend this place to anyone. It would be great for people of all ages!!! The owners have everything you need and more. We loved finding pool floaties, games, and lawn chairs to watch the stunning sunsets each night. We are already planning our next visit!

Good beach rental

  • 4 of 5

House was very clean. Bed super comfortable. Garden beautiful and very well attended to. Overall a great property - only negatives were the kitchen dishes, glasswear, etc could use replacing also chairs around pool not very comfortable. The furniture on the patio of the house however was very comfortable.

Playa Grande

  • 4 of 5

We loved this little piece of Costa Rica. My husband and 2 sons (24 and 20) stayed here for New Years -and into January 2018. This is a great little spot, very laid back, practically had the pool to ourselves. Grounds keepers worked diligently every morning to keep everything clean. The villa itself was a great little setup. Keep in mind 1 bathroom! It was okay for a week, but my preference is 2 bathrooms. All dishes are plastic ( I get why), but the pots and pans need replacing, and there needs to be more in order to cook full meals. (baking sheets for nachos etc) We had some trouble with the gas stove, so we were unable to use the stove the entire stay - we used the BBQ, which was fine for us. All the furnishings were comfortable, and we were about a 5-7 min walk to the beach. This is a very laid back, quiet area. If you want some nightlife, you walk up the end of the beach and hop on a boat taxi to Tamarindo (about 2 min ride for 1000CRC), you will have to taxi back if its late as the taxi service does not run at night. (30-40US$) A couple of great walking distance restaurants. Bula Bula is fabulous! Top notch restaurant, and staff! I would come back here again for sure!

Location is great

  • 3 of 5

Not a 5 Star. The location is great, beach so nice, and surf is great. Little walk to beach. Walked 5 plus miles a day on beach and into town after water taxi. Gecko and scorpion in my bed where not high lights. House is in need of TLC. Broken tiles, holes in ceiling and not proper way to disinfect the dishes was concerning. At what I paid a night maybe got what I paid for.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. This kind of vacation is for individuals looking to experience the culture and simplicity of this warm, wonderful country. As for your concerns, we do not advertise this as a 5 star vacation. There isn't a dishwasher for disinfecting dishes but there is hot water and dish soap provided. There aren't any "holes" in our ceiling. For anyone aware, gecko's will sleep in nooks and crannies such as our timber beams. And Costa Rica does have scorpions. Thanks for your tile suggestions. We are down here right now, sourcing materials and design for a renovation planned for the slow season when there are no guests scheduled. Rick Mullen

Comfortable, but not convenient

  • 3 of 5

The house was bright, cheery and nicely situated with a pool and easy walking distance to the beach. The hosts were accommodating and usually available via text for questions or concerns. The beds were very comfortable, the A/C was a nice feature, the shower is very good. The kitchen badly needs to be better equipped and a new stove. All dishes and glasses were plastic, even wine glasses were old, very dingy plastic. Limited pots/pans, etc. We saw the kitchens of a couple other units......they were much better equipped. The BBQ (both gas & charcoal) are barely holding together. A car is definitely needed. The water taxi (too far to walk with young children) ends at 4pm and a taxi ride back from Tamarindo after dinner is $40-45. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance, very simple, nice service, basic menus. The nearby market is way over priced....1/4lb butter was $3.25! It is a great spot if you have a car, don't mind 30-40 minutes drives to get anywhere....groceries, shops, ATM, restaurants. If you just want to stay put, walk the beach (gorgeous), lay by the pool, etc. this is the place.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your suggestions and should let you know there is a kitchen and bathroom renovation scheduled for this summer, once our visitor traffic slows down. I'm not sure if you noticed, but all of the surrounding units use plastic due to concerns about glass at the pool area. Thanks to your welcome suggestion, we will have them replaced. Its pretty much an annual requirement due to the sun and harsh soaps in Costa Rica. We're terribly sorry you had to deal with a small emergency while on your holiday. It's one of the reasons we recommend a rental car on this listing. Outside of emergencies though, there are also boat taxi's available 40 ft from our property at Bula Bula - listed on our in-house resources. Once again, thank you for taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback. Rick Mullen

Fun Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The villa was wonderful for our family of four. I loved having two bedrooms so the kids didn't have to share a room with us. The common area is large and kitchen has everything you need to do some cooking. The market around the corner had more American products than the Super Sized one in Tamarindo so check that one first if you are looking for something familiar (assuming you are American of course - LOL). With only six villas in the property the pool was always free for a dip which was nice in the afternoons when the beaches were a little too rough for our little ones. The owner was delightful coming by twice in the week. We really enjoyed working with her as everything went smoothly. My only surprise was that the villa only had air conditioning in the bedrooms and not throughout. Not a deal breaker for us since sleeping was the time we needed it most but just sharing for others.
