|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
The Dog House is located on Water Street, just a short walk to the heart of Eastport's historic seaport. This charming cottage has been lovingly renovated from top to bottom to maximize unobstructed water views of Passamaquoddy Bay, Campobello Island and the Canadian Maritime Islands from every room.
You can watch the whales and hear their mating calls from the huge deck. Outdoor living features dining for 10, 2 chaise lounges, a sofa and 2 armchairs surrounding a fire pit ... great for those chilly Downeast nights. The interior is whimsically decorated with dog inspired design. Antique canine oil paintings and hooked rugs let you know that you are truly 'in the dog house'. Eastport is known for spectacular sunrises that you will enjoy from the comfort of your bedroom or the private upstairs deck. This home has been featured in 2 national interior design magazines; the premier issue of American Dream Cottage Summer 2012 and Lehigh Valley Style April 2014. A 10 minute walk puts you in the midst of Eastport's thriving downtown with many unique shops, galleries and restaurants. The Breakwater offers deep water fishing from the pier. Eastport is famous for it's festivals: July 4th celebration, the infamous Pirate Festival, the Eastport Salmon Festival and Witches of Eastport. The Tides Institute and Museum showcases the history and culture of the Passamaquoddy region. Culinary options are all within walking distance. Moose Island Bakery, a coffee shop and 5 restaurants just steps away. Fresh lobster can be found at Quoddy Bay Lobster, voted by Yankee Magazine as having the best lobster roll in New England. Whale watching and fishing expeditions are available in town. Enjoy the concerts of Summer Keys .. just a water taxi away. Hiking and kayaking options abound.
A former New Yorker relocated to Maine, living a simpler life and loving every minute! Not a day goes by that I'm not spellbound by the spectacular beauty of my surroundings.
Lisa Stephen purchased this house in 2008
I fell in love with Eastport the minute I turned on to Water Street. I purchased this home as a retreat from a busy life in PA. A breathtaking view was my top priority. This home has exceeded my expectations. You'll be awed by the beauty. The home was badly in need of renovation. Everything was redesigned and reworked. As a dog lover, I brought my collection of canine art and rugs Downeast.. I loved it so much that I moved to Eastport permanently in 2012. This has been my primary residence for that last 2 years. I'm currently at work on my 3rd renovation.
This home is made for entertaining on the huge deck ... you'll spend most of your time outdoors.
We have returned from our 2nd stay at the Dog House, in as many years. I first want to thank Lisa for creating my “Happy Place”. You know that perfect place you go to in your mind when life is bearing down on you with unrelenting demands and everything and everyone seems to want to take some piece of you until there feels like there is nothing left and all you just want to do is escape and run away from home. Well the Dog House has become that place I now dream of running to.
The house itself could not me any more charming. I cannot think of one single thing that I would add or take away. There is everything you could possibly want or need provided. All you need do is show up with a few clothes and toiletries.
The view of the water and off islands is soothing and you can actually feel the tension drain away as the gulls laugh overhead and the breeze whispers a welcome. I think my favorite time is the mornings when the fog is resting just over the water and you can image that time has stopped and that 100s of years ago someone stood where you are now standing and watched the fog roll in just as you are currently dong.
The town of Eastport is the kind of place you see portrayed in all those Hallmark movies at Christmas time. Only it is a real place in Downeast Maine and not on a back lot in a Hollywood studio. Needless to say I am a fan and plan to return again and again and again…
We have stayed at the Dog House twice now and we love it. There is a fantastic view of the Passamaquoddy Bay and the Maritimes of Canada and whales and fishing boats from the deck. The house is adorable. It is decorated with original paintings of dogs everywhere, so cute. And we love the town of Eastport and its friendly people.
My husband and I shared a great week at the "Doghouse" this July. The home was exactly as presented on the website, charming and very clean. It has a wonderful view of the water considering it is not directly oceanfront. We enjoyed evening meals with a fire on the deck. Lisa is delightful and eager to please. The town of Eastport is quite small but so welcoming. We loved the shops and the bakery! We are planning our return trip!
There is little that I can add to the glowing reviews which led me to book this rental but will attempt to add my impressions. The property was all that was described in the listing and more The views are beyond description. The property contained everything that anyone could want to make a successful transition from home. We consistently found little extras which showed the amount of care and concern exhibited by Lisa. She was attentive to any of our requests for information and assistance. Waco's was our favorite breakfast place for many breakfasts. When you see the locals there, you know that you have found the right place. Lobster rolls for lunch or an early lobster dinner at Quoddy Bay Lobster (they close at 6 PM) on there outdoor pavilion by the Bay, can't be beat. It is well worth the drive to Campbell Island and the FRD museum (avoid the Fireside Restaurant). Another worthwhile destination is Kingsbrar Gardens in St. Andrews. Both are in Canada so bring your passports. As interesting as the many sights in the area, nothing is more relaxing than a day on the deck at the Dog House enjoying the fantastic views from the morning sunrise to the evening fog forming on the distant islands. I would gladly recommend this property to my friends and family seeking a relaxing respite from their daily pressures.
My wife and I recently stayed at the Dog House for a second time this June. Eastport and the Dog House were wonderful as usual. The home is very accommodating and we made great use of the deck and fireplace on the chilly nights. We had lobster at least once a day ( well I did, my wife is pregnant!) We did some shopping in the Eastport and neighboring Lubec for some great nautical gifts. We were a little early in the season for whales but enjoyed walking the coast collecting beach treasures. We will be sure to be back someday ! Thank you again to the wonderful owner Lisa !
What a delightful stay we had in Eastport
The Doghouse is unique, charming, and fun. Lisa has made sure that every need is met. The kitchen is filled with utensils needed for any occasion. There's comfortable seating inside and on the deck. If it's a chilly day (as it can be on the ocean in Maine) there's not only a fireplace , but also a fire pit on the deck. The ever changing view of ocean and sky is magical.
On our ten minute stroll downtown we saw four deer cross Water Street. Obviously they love Eastport, too! We enjoyed taking the path down by the working waterfront and enjoying the scent and color of the beautifully designed garden on the sloping bank. Ice cream, baked goods, candy, Maine crafts, wood carvings, galleries, and other shops filled the lovely Victorian storefronts along Water Street.
Don't miss lunch at Quoddy Bay Lobster, a visit to Raye's Mustard, or a trip to Campobello. Our stay was too short. We've made a "to do" list of other things for next time. We know for sure that it will include a stay at The Dog House, or maybe The Lobster Trap, Lisa's other rental. Either way, we know we can't go wrong.
Great hiking in Shackford, Cobscook and Quoddy Head State Parks. Nearby lakes provide lots of options for kayaking. A great place for bird watchers, home to the 10th Annual Downeast Spring Birding Festival. Whale watching and puffin sightings on cruises in Passamaquoddy Bay and Bay of Fundy depart downtown, within walking distance.
