This oceanfront home is named Kaikanani (the beautiful sea) and is located at the water's edge at the historic Kealakekua Bay. You are literally next to the ocean from every room. The home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and very comfortably accommodates six people with two king beds and two twin beds. The home was renovated after being devastated by the March, 2011 Japan tidal wave.
Kealakekua Bay is a protected marine sanctuary and is an excellent place to snorkel, dive and kayak. Access to the ocean is next door at Manini Beach. The bay is filled with a variety of marine life- colorful tropical fish and beautiful coral. Dolphins and whales (in season) can be seen directly from the lanai! There is exceptional snorkeling right in front of the house in the clean, clear, and usually very calm water. Ocean water temperature averages in the mid 70 degree F.
This historic bay is where Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778 and was killed on his return to Kealakekua a year later. Kealakekua Bay is also the site of Hiki'au Heiau and the bay is a revered cultural center of old Hawa'ii. The federal park, Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, the Hawaiian's ancient City of Refuge, is a short drive (3.5m) to the south.
While at Kaikanani, be prepared to relax and experience the laid-back life-style of old Hawaii– no high rises or city noise here! Kealakekua Bay's village, Napo'opo'o, remains the sleepy village of yesterday. The only sounds you will hear will be the ocean rolling onto the shore. Hele mai! Come experience Kaikanani.

We wish we could stay longer... We rented the house for only 3nights. Beautiful view and the house is very clean and has everything we need. We could see dolphins and whales from Lanai. If you want to do BBQ, you better buy charcoal in advance. We did not have charcoal so, we asked next door people. They are very kind and put the fire for us with woods. That was perfect!! Best snorkeling spots are around. Sunset from Manini Beach Park was outstanding !!! We plan to come back next year again!!
My wife and I invited our grown children and their spouse to spend a week with us at The Water's Edge at Kealakekua Bay in mid-March and it was fantastic. The house was clean and had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. But, that wasn't the best part. This house has the absolutely best location on the island for snorkeling, kayaking, watching the sunset and meeting local people. You can snorkel right in front of the cabin and see many species of fish as well as sea turtles and a couple of Moray Eels. You can rent kayaks from the neighbor or from another vendor a short distance away and it is an easy paddle to the Captain Cook monument across the bay. The days we went snorkeling we didn't get to swim with the Spinner Dolphins but we did watch others do so several times. The trip from the house to the main highway is curvy and very interesting with the wild chickens and Mongoose you see frequently crossing the road. We did spend a couple of days sightseeing and it wasn't the most convenient but is very doable and worth the effort.
All told, this is the place to rent if you want a quite place with many things to do right in front of your house. We all hated to leave and will most certainly try to rent this place the next time we are on the Big Island
I was traveling with 5 teenagers 12-19. This house was great for us. There are 2 bedrooms and a bathroom in the lower level and 1 bedroom and bathroom on the upper level. The older kids stayed downstairs and loved having the area to themselves. The view is to die for. Sitting on the lanai at night and early morning is fantastic. The beach to go snorkeling is 50 yards from the house. However this isn't a nice sandy beach for little kids. It is just an area to get into the bay safely. There is a nice swimming beach about 15 minutes away. The grocery store is about 10 minutes away. The drive down from the highway is winding but not too bad. The final 1/4 mile is very narrow with tight turns but we made it with a Suburban. The area is isolated and quiet but that is what made it great. My only complaint was the lack of supplies in the kitchen. There was nothing except salt and pepper. No baggies, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, spices, oils, literally nothing. Even cookware was lacking. I had to cook breakfast for 6 with 1 large skillet. But we made it work and had a great time. Pickin up the key when the office was closed was no problem and the management staff was very helpful.
The view from this house during our stay was by far the best memory from our stay on the Big Island. Kayaking across to the Captain Cook Monument, snorkeling right off the rocks and playing in the tidepools with our young twins were just several of the many activities that we enjoyed. The neighborhood is quiet and everyone is very friendly. The house even includes a nice lawn to play on. The only drawback I can think of for the house is the drive from the main highway to the house itself which takes about 10 minutes each way (which isn't very much if you think about it). Once you get to the house and you see the sea right there, it makes it all worthwhile. Thank you to the owners and the rental agency, everyone was great and our family enjoyed our time at this amazing oceanfront home. Mahalo.
My husband, our adult son and I spent 3 wonderful days in this house. It has a fabulous view of the bay from either inside or out. We had a wonderful storm the first night which made the view from inside even more important. The layout would be perfect for grandparents, parents and kids. There is a master BR upstairs and 2 BR downstairs off the garage with another bathroom. You go through the garage and up the outside stairs to get to the main living space where the master bedroom is. This gave our son his own private suite which was lovely. We rented kayaks to go to the Captain Cook monument and saw whales on the way over. Actually, my only complaint about the property is that the lanai is fairly narrow (although long) so eating there was a little tight. Otherwise, it was perfect
My Children and extended family stayed here for 4 nights during Christmas. We cooked a huge Turkey dinner with all the side dishes and the house had everything we needed. We fished off the rocks, snorkled, walked to the edge of the beach front to see the sunset every single night and dove the the Manta Rays. It was truly magical to have all our family in one house with so much beauty around us.
4 of us stayed for 6 nights on Jan 2015. This was our 2nd time to stay at this house. Always great !! We saw whales from Lanai everyday. Also, we encountered with dolphin and swam with them at the Kealakekua Bay which is located just in front of the house!! Just stay at the house and relax, snorkeling…… BBQ… That all we did. We are sure to come back the house next year again.
Visit the Volcano National Park, a two hour drive from the house.
Drive north to Waimea and the Parker Ranch for a taste of the paniolo way of life.
Visit nearby Honaunau, The City of Refuge (3.5miles to the south)
Drive into Kailua, Kona (25 minutes north) where there are many shops, stores, and restaurants. The closest grocery store, Choice Mart, is 10 minutes away at the top of the hill above the house in the sleepy little town of Captain Cook. Choice Mart is just south of the turndown road to the bay from the upper Mamalahoa Hwy. Also, there is a great restaurant that is also 10 minutes away called Keei Cafe.
There are two companies that rent kayaks in Kealakekua Bay that offer guided tours:
1. ALOHA KAYAKS:
2. KONA BOYS:
3. Lani, who is next door, rents kayaks as well.
