A good condo for a last-minute long weekend getaway

  • 4 of 5

We rented this condo at the last minute for a long weekend. Most places won't rent for less than a week, so I felt lucky to get it. We were fortunate to be able to check in early--the realty staff was very accommodating and helpful. The condo was for the most part clean and cool; there was a bag of opened potato chips on one porch, but that was the worst of it. The unit could definitely use some updating with paint, fixtures, and especially ceiling fans in bedrooms and on porches, but it was serviceable enough. The living/dining area was very spacious! The kitchen was tiny but stocked enough for light cooking and had everything we might have needed, including grill tools. We discovered a leak in one side of the kitchen sink, reported it to the realty the next morning, and met the maintenance man later that afternoon. He couldn't fix it right away, due to the weekend, and was very apologetic, but we were making things work and using only one side of the sink. The TV's were all in good working order, and the beds were comfortable. Parking was never an issue, and the complex felt secure. The people we met were nice--it appeared that owners spend a lot of time at their condos and that renters return annually. The block and a half walk to the beach was not a bad one, but we did have to traverse what is surely the only hill in the Grand Strand area--thank goodness for our beach wagon! The little mini mart, cafe, ABC store, and bar/grill were very convenient, as were other shops, stores, and restaurants back on Hwy 17. Since this section of beach is not connected to Ocean Drive, it was mostly local traffic and quieter. However, we learned the hard way that personal umbrellas cannot be set up in front of the beach service chairs, which was unfortunate since most of them were unoccupied. We were forced to set up on the hot sand and had limited views of the ocean. I also wish that smoking was not allowed on the beach as is the ordinance at other beaches. All in all, it was a good weekend at a nice place; I've always had good luck with VRBO, and this didn't disappoint.
