'Watersong,' a stunning, three-level waterfront home, built of hand-crafted alpine logs, by one of the West's most renowned architects, is one of the loveliest on the shores of the incomparable Flathead Lake.
The floor-to-ceiling windows spanning the front of the home offer breathtaking views of Flathead Lake and Montana's skyscrapers, the Mission Mountains, with an even more panoramic view from the upper outdoor deck and large covered boat dock.
With lake, mountain and forest views from virtually every room in the house, you will experience the tranquility of lake living in a luxurious, upscale log-home setting: The best of the outdoors, with the comforts of home.
The Great Room truly is magnificent. It boasts soaring ceilings with an equally tall rock fireplace on which 'Teddy,' a huge trophy elk, with a 6' antler span, shot by a direct, name-sake descendant of one of our country's greatest presidents, lovingly guards his guests, below.
The kids will delight in the nearly 200 feet of lakefront, where they may cook s'mores and hotdogs on the beach fire pit, then enjoy their feast on two adjoining picnic tables and benches. Adults can supervise from lounge chairs on the extensive covered dock.
After a barbecue on the upper deck of the remarkable main home, adults may relax in four different lounge areas and enjoy the peacefulness of Dewey's Cove, which snuggly protects Watersong from harsher weather, allowing for more gentle water and added privacy. Although the cove protects us from stronger winds and higher waves experienced elsewhere on Flathead Lake, it still offers jaw-dropping views of the Mission Mountains, as they reach toward the heavens with peaks that often stay white-capped well into the summer.
Beautifully furnished, the home features warm, radiant-heated hardwood floors, an upscale gourmet kitchen, complete with Sub-Zero refrigerator, travertine marble countertops, gas range, dishwasher, disposal, bronze fixtures, and other amenities consistent with a higher-end home.
The spacious master bedroom, tastefully decorated in true mountain-lodge style, offers a California king bed, walk-in closet, two dressers and an entertainment center/flat screen smart TV and DVD player. The expansive master bathroom features a sumptuous Jacuzzi bath with a full view of the lake, a walk-in tiled shower, and a vanity counter with two sinks.
The downstairs master bedroom, with smart TV and DVD player, walk-in closet, is a horse-lover's dream, with the equestrian motif expanding into a full bathroom that features a separate vanity area.
Another downstairs bedroom, with a pull-down Murphy bed, has built-in cabinetry, complete with a desk that is ideal for those who have some office work to complete. This office work, however, comes with a gorgeous lake view, making it more pleasure than work.
The home also has a downstairs living room with smart TV and DVD player, an electronic basketball game, two twin sleigh beds downstairs, in addition to a set of bunk beds with a pull-out trundle in the loft. The loft also features a small library. The loft has a balcony, so younger children should not use this area.
The home has numerous amenities, including a laundry room with a washer/dryer, wireless Internet service, a landline, books, four flat screen smart TVs for Netflix, DVDs and videos, and much more.
The charming guest house, which is rented separately for those who have more than eight people in the main house, is uniquely furnished in darling cabin décor. It has a kitchen with dishes and cooking supplies, a full bathroom with shower and tub, a lanai to enjoy the spectacular views, and sleeps three, with a queen bed and a pull-out love seat that sleeps one. The guest house is only rented in conjunction with rental of the main home. It is not rented by itself.
A private drive, guarded by two 20' totem bears, leads to the home, to which you will want to return every year.
Because this is a luxury home; and, although the main home sleeps 11 comfortably, the owners ask that NO MORE THAN EIGHT OVERNIGHT GUESTS SLEEP IN THE MAIN HOUSE, three in the guest house, and no more than 11 people be on the entire property at one time, unless a written exception is provided by the owners.
This is a private high-end home, owned by a family who is extremely careful to whom they rent; so, FOR GUESTS WHO WANT A RAUCOUS PARTY OR LARGE GATHERING, THIS IS NOT THE HOME FOR THEM. NEITHER IS IT THE HOME FOR SMALL CHILDREN; however, for those ADULTS WITH MATURE CHILDREN who want to experience the serenity of nature at her aesthetic best, this most definitely is the place to be.
Lakeside, Polson and Sommers are close by and offer shopping, boat rental, and a variety of dining experiences. Bigfork, too, is close, and offers a professional summer theater, galleries, golfing, fun nightlife, and wonderful restaurants. Kalispell is only 30 miles to the north, and extends the best of larger-city experiences, tempered with the ambience and feel of a smaller mountain community.
You also will not want to miss Whitefish, a quaint town with fabulous galleries and restaurants, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and, of course, some of the best skiing you will find, anywhere.
Legendary newsman, the late Charles Kuralt, once called Glacier National Park's "Going to the Sun Highway," the most beautiful road in the world. Travel it and you will see why. With pristine forests, pure mountain lakes, and over 700 miles of trails; and, of course, the glaciers, you won't want to miss Glacier Park.
All of these sites are literally in our backyard, none over an hour away.
Just two miles south of Watersong is the Rollins General Store. It looks from the outside like it came straight out of the old west, and that's because it did! For quick food items, it is convenient and is locally owned by friendly folks who are glad to tell you just how lucky you are to be in God's special country. The General Store also serves as Rollins' post office.
Watersong is a luxurious lake home you never will want to leave. Looking from the home toward the deep magical waters of Flathead Lake, the largest fresh-water lake in the western U.S., you realize that people come from all over the world to experience the beauty of Montana mountains and lakes, and that there are none more scenic than from the decks of this spectacular home.
Watersong provides the best of the outdoors enjoyed within the comforts of fine living. It is nature's perfect antidote to the chaos of our everyday world. Start each day with your favorite warm beverage, walk down to the dock, which extends well into the lake, and greet the sun as it rises over the mountains. It's a vision to last you a lifetime, and it's a life-changer.

Shelley worked in higher education for over 20 years. Larry has been one of Montana's top, award-winning financial advisors for nearly 40 years. We have two grown sons and a daughter who plays basketball for Montana State University Billings, where Larry also serves as a trustee. We live in Billings, Mont. We are native small-town Montanans (Larry was raised on an eastern Montana ranch, Shelley in Laurel) who love our state and delight in seeing others enjoy it as well. Shelley is retired and writes for several magazines.
Shelley Van Atta purchased this house in 2011
Larry and I have wanted a home on Flathead Lake all our lives. We have travelled extensively and agree wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful place we ever have seen. Under the expansive azure skies of Montana's "Big Sky Country,' we have found our 'Last Best Place,' right here, in Dewey's Cove, on Flathead Lake. We look at the giant teeth of the magnificent Mission Mountains, with their white caps scratching the belly of heaven, and turn our eyes to the incomparable Flathead Lake, one of the 300 largest natural lakes in the world, and we know we had found paradise. Once you are here, we feel confident you will agree.
When 'Watersong' became available, we were so excited. It is a stunning home, in a magnificent setting. This is our family's vacation home, and we want to share it with people who will appreciate it, respect it; and, we hope, become part of our annual 'family of friends,' returning every year. This is not a home for large parties and raucous frivolity. It is a place to enjoy the tranquility of nature at her pure best.
Larry and I like to boat and go for quiet meals in the area villages, which boast their own brand of uniqueness. Each has its individual charm; the people are friendly and welcoming. Our kids like to jet ski, water ski, go tubing, plus swimming and paddle-boarding in the calm of Dewey's Cove, right off our dock.
In the evening, we barbecue on the upper deck of the home, then bring the food down to the beach, after which the kids will light a fire in the open fire pit and cook s'mores. We often sit on the extensive dock and watch the sun set.
There is a bald eagle that frequent a certain tree on our property, and geese that live on our shore. White-tail deer come into our front yard nearly every evening. What a Montana treasure! My favorite thing to do, however, is to enjoy a good book while sitting either on the upper deck of the home or on the boat dock, savoring the gentle, pine-filled breezes of Dewey's Cove, appreciating the backdrop of those magnificent Mission Mountains; and, of course, drinking in the view of the most gorgeous lake in the world!
We cannot say enough good things about this gorgeous home and perfect lakefront location. Our family agreed it was tied for best vacation we have ever taken and we've experienced some pretty special vacations over the years. It was everything we had hoped for. The home is truly lovely and well cared for. The flat wide waterfront location on a quiet bay with amazing views makes it a very special spot on the lake. The home sits in a private neighborhood with only a few other lovely homes surrounding and is protected by a 30 acre private park to the back. The day we arrived we were greeted by 8 deer who lived in the rolling meadow lawn of the neighbors yard and we enjoyed watching them during our entire stay. The local boat company delivered kayaks, paddleboards, and a boat to our dock and picked them up when we were finished. We never had to go anywhere except to the grocery.
The owners are lovely and were over the top in providing history about the home, the area, and places to go. They were easy to work with and very prompt in communication and returning our deposit.
The ambiance of this place makes the perfect Montana vacation. We cannot wait to visit this wonderful place again!
We spent the week towards the end of August. This log home was just beautiful. The owners were amazing to work with and exceeded our expectations. The water at Flathead is so clear and beautiful. The dock was wonderful to have coffee in the morning or drinks in the afternoon. We just love this area and overall was a fantastic vacation.
The lot and location of this beautiful lake-side home seems like the perfect place for a week on the lake. Unfortunately, the exterior of the home posed some safety hazards, that you should confirm have been fixed before renting. For a summer, lake-front vacation, you'll spend 80% of your time outside. Make sure the deck railing and stairs to the lower level have been repaired. They were covered in "Caution" tape when we arrived. The beach fire pit area had multiple debris piles, making it unsafe to have s'mores over a fire. And, the dock had multiple loose boards and popped nails. The interior of the home is in good condition. Although the homeowners became difficult after our stay, emailing us multiple times about check-out procedures.
We spent a week at this cabin in early August. The cabin is beautiful and fit our family of 8 perfectly. The owners were good to work with and seemed very in-tune to making sure we had a wonderful experience. The bay is beautiful with wonderful views of the mission mountain range. We rented a boat from Lakeside for the week and had a great place to park it at the cabin dock. Easily a 5 star!
We stayed with a group of friends at Watersong for the wedding celebration of a special friend. This beautiful log home and setting could not have been more perfect for several days of wedding festivities. We took advantage of the deck for morning coffee and evening dinners with phenomenal views of the lake and mountains along with great conversations. The dock and lake were handy for cooling down on hot summer days and boat rentals in town made for relaxing days on the lake. Shelley was very thoughtful in checking in to make sure our stay was memorable. Overall a trip all will remember and that we hope to repeat in the future.
Beautiful home with an amazing view of the water and breadth of the lake. Evenings were spectacular to sit either by the camp fire or the deck and enjoy the long summer evenings. Location wise it's a perfect spot on the water with little traffic but great access to get the boat out and enjoy some tube time with the kids during the day. Reasonable distance to Lakeside with a host of amenities like Tamarack and other great spots for dinner. The home is well taken care of and very clean. Shelley clearly loves her cabin and it shows with all of the attention to various details. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get off the beaten track and catch their breath.
Kalispell is only 30 miles to the north; Polson is 23 miles to the south; and the charming town of Lakeside is only six miles away. Just the drive to these places is worth the trip to see the magnificent views, speaking of which, Glacier National Park is but an hour away, The quaint village of Bigfork is just around the lake, where you may enjoy live professional theater during the summer. Each town offers a variety of activities, some of which are unique to the area.
Skiers: Blacktail Mountain is approximate a 40-minute drive and Whitefish Mountain is just under an hour away.
Watercraft of all kinds may be rented in Lakeside, which is only six miles away.
