About John or Pat Rice

Hatteras Island is home to us. We are retired schoolteachers from Ohio who have vacationed here for 45 years. When we had the opportunity we built a home and moved here. After ten years, we still love this island we call home and look forward to many years of happy island living.

John or Pat Rice purchased this cottage in 2004

Why John or Pat Rice chose Cape Hatteras

After Hurricane Isabel we decided to buy a rental property by the beach. Hatteras Holiday was available and we were able to purchase it, known then as Shell-finder. We live in Buxton and had always vacationed in Frisco, so Hatteras, only ten miles away, was a learning experience for us. We have learned to love Hatteras and spend many days at Hatteras Holiday. Our children and grandchildren think of our cottage as their vacation home. The neighborhood is wonderful, made up of vacationers and summer residents. It is safe, quiet, and welcoming, a great place for anyone who wants to get away from hectic every day life and relax.

What makes this cottage unique

Hatteras is a village, home to many of our local people and charter boat families. There is a grocery store, a hardware, good restaurants, a library, a museum, the Coast Guard base, great marinas, and quiet island living. You can walk to everything in Hatteras or you can ride your bike anywhere. If you like more excitement, you can drive an hour to Nags Head for shopping and golf. If you want to step back in time, you can take the free ferry to Ocracoke and spend the day.

Excellent. Very clean, private. 2 minutes walking distance to the ocean. Very convenient location, close to ferry, great coffee shop. Provided bikes were great, and we were able to get to the coffee shop, stores and marina. Grill was also a very useful addition. Definitely recommend.

Wonderful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about the cottage is as stated in the description. My husband and I stayed here while attending a friend's wedding. The cottage was very clean when we arrived and it is very well kept. The screened porch and open deck are wonderful. When you stay here you are steps to the beach and walking distance to the Marina and the Ferry. John and Pat were very responsive to our questions. I highly recommend staying here!

Wonderful Family Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 stayed at Hatteras Holiday for 5 nights. It was all of our first time at OBX and the kids' first time seeing the ocean, so we were excited!!! We have a little 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house ourselves, so this cottage was just the right size for us! First of all, it was very clean! And, secondly, the location was perfect! It's a short walk to the beach and a short drive to the local shops. We were there mid-May, so there were not many people on the beach. The water was chilly, but not too chilly to prevent us from playing in the waves anyway! (We're from the north, so we're used to the cold!) The water was more calm toward the beginning of the day. We built sand castles, collected shells, watched the crabs crawl around on the beach. It was such a calm and peaceful way to spend a family vacation together. The storage room was awesome! The beach chairs especially came in handy! One of the days we were there, it was rainy, so we went to the museum around the corner about the lost ships of the Atlantic. It was really nice, and they even had a craft room with a seashell craft for all of us to do. One day, we took the ferry to Ocracoke Island. The ferry was just around the corner from the cottage. Somebody wrote in the guestbook to get there before 9am, and they were right! There was a much longer line later on in the morning. The Hatteras lighthouse was another highlight. It was a short drive away and definitely worth the stop. We did venture out to Nags Head for some shopping and more touristy activities with the kids. It's a long drive out there, though. I think it took us about an hour and a half. The local fish markets are awesome! The fish was so fresh and delicious. We enjoyed cooking the fresh fish back at the cottage and eating out in the patio. And we really enjoyed our dinner at Dinky's in Hatteras. One evening, we walked to Teach's Lair Marina across from Woodall and watched the sunset from the docks. It was absolutely beautiful! We loved everything about the cottage ~ the deck, the patio, the charcoal grill, the DVD collection for a rainy afternoon. And we had just about everything we needed there. We ended up buying handsoap for the bathrooms, but that was it. The owners and all of the locals were so nice! If we get the chance to go back to the Outer Banks for a vacation again, we would definitely stay at Hatteras Holiday in Hatteras! We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable vacation! Thank you John and Pat!!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We could not have picked a better place to stay at the Cape. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed ,plus more. Go out the door and the beach was right down the walkway in the sand. The light house was easy to find. My husband ended up in the ER for 9 hours. The next day we left, and met the owner on our way out. He told us we could stay a couple extra days since we didn't get to go on the ferry. That was a very nice offer. We highly recommend this place to everybody.

Great Stay - RELAXING.

  • 5 of 5

Well maintained (however VCR remote did not work) and clean.

Kitchen was well equipped (we did not do much cooking).

TV's in bedrooms could be updated and bigger.

As describe in listing. Bikes were so convenient.

Close to the be beach.

Great, great location.

We went to Ocracoke Island and The Graveyard of The Atlantic Museum. Good visits and free.

We went from April 1st to April 5th. Very cold, windy and rainy. Ocean was cold and wild. Never saw others swimming. We did. So it was pretty much a private beach.

Gas was pretty expensive over there.

Buy groceries before arriving there.

Owner's Response: Isabel, Thank you for a great review! Thanks for letting me know about the VCR remote, it was in the wrong place and belonged in the bedroom. TV cable technician came after your stay and replaced boxes with High Definition cable boxes and programmed the cable remotes to control the VCR s this should end the confusion. A new larger HDTV is on its way for the bedroom . Thank you again for staying with us and please think of Hatteras Holiday when you plan to return to the Island. Sincerely John and Pat Rice

Great Fall Break!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our 10 month old daughter really enjoyed our time at Hatteras Holiday! It was my fall break from teaching and a break for my husband from studying for his first medical scool board exam. We needed the rest and relaxation and got just that! The beach was about a two minute walk, very empty this time of year which we really enjoyed. Had a fire on the beach and enjoyed the nights! The house was cozy and clean, with tons of blankets and kitchen necessities. Good movie collection but we didn't have time! Took advantage of the free WiFi and loved the extra beach stuff like chairs and umbrellas downstairs. My husband was able to keep our truck clean after driving on the beach with the outside hose. We used the grill several times and the big steamer pot for crabs and shrimp! Highly recommend this house for a family of five or smaller. And John was great to work with, he changed our dates several times to fit our schedule with no hassles at all. Such a wonderful vacation we will surely remember for a long time!
