Fantastic cottage within minutes to beach

  • 5 of 5

We had four adults and one dog and were extremely comfortable with the ample room and amenities provided. The previous week we rented several blocks away and were not cleared into property until after 6:00 pm. Not here. We were in the cottage by 1:15 pm which gave us the afternoon on the beach. The cleaning company Shore Details were able to clean, change linens and leave the home immaculate and were very attentive to some minor issues; replaced toaster and provided the new WiFi password.

Used fireplace twice for cooking burgers, hot dogs and chicken. I would recommend the self starting charcoal as it can get a bit windy by the beach. The outdoor porch was great place to relax. The storage shed below is very large with ample space for all of your beach stuff; in fact, they have umbrellas, beach chairs and bicycles available for your use.

We ate dinner out often and you are within walking distance to Hatteras Sol and The Wreck restaurants. The Sol has a very good menu which we took advantage of twice during the week. The Wreck, which we also ate at twice, is a good place for sandwiches and drinks for lunch. Lee Robinson's general store is less than 5 minutes drive away for your food staples and Needo's a few minutes away is a good place to find stuff you forgot to bring from home. The kitchen was very adequate with dishwasher and counter-top stove.

Cottage is 2 minutes away from the Okracoke ferry which we took on a Monday (Mid and late week you may have a long wait to board ferry). The crossing is prox. 1 hour but it is a must see if you are first timers. We have been coming to Hatteras Village for 17 years and always fit in the Okracoke trip.

The beach is wide and not crowded and if you like to fish there are offshore and inshore charters available; as well as surf fishing. We chartered a boat for inshore (next to Teach's) and caught Cobia and Puppy Drum. You can pay to have the fish cleaned, which we did, or bring back to the cottage to clean outside on the fish cleaning table. In any case, the fishing in Hatteras is excellent. On past trips we chartered for offshore and caught Mahi-Mahi and Wahoo.

To sum up; this cottage is perfect for its amenities, proximity to restaurants, and a stone's throw to the beach. Will stay here again.

Great location to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Hatteras Holiday. The house was perfect for a small family and had an added bonus..we got to take our dog! There was lots of goodies for the beach in the storage room and loved the outdoor shower helping us keep sand out of the house. It was a very quiet area and the beach wasn't crowded. Every one we delt with was very kind!

Not What I Was Hoping For.

  • 2 of 5

The good. The house itself is very nice. It's a cozy little cottage with plenty of room for six people. It is a short walk to the beach. Less than 100 yards. There are plenty of room for people to gather. There is an array of beach equipment available for use, chairs, umbrellas, beach toys. The place was clean when we arrived. The kitchen was well equipped.

The bad. I had two major problems with the house itself. The first was there were no towels provided in the bathrooms. Now I have rented a lot of properties over the years from VRBO this is the first one that did not have towels in the bathrooms. We had to go to the store and spend about $50.00 to buy everyone a bath towel plus several hand towels and washcloths.

The second major problem was the grill. The charcoal grill provided here is a “park style” grill. Which is worthless when it comes to cooking anything other than hotdogs. It is fixed in the ground on a steel post with a grate which can not be removed in order to properly build a coal fire. Because it rained several days I had to purchase for another $30.00 a grill that could be moved out of the rain.

The rest. To me a vacation is about more than just the place you stay. When I go on vacation I want to relax, I want peace and quiet. I expect to be able to sleep until noon if I want. That did not happen because there is a house being built across the street and every morning at 7:00AM they start in with heavy equipment (think backhoes and the pleasant sound they make) along with sawing and pounding. I did not get a good night sleep the entire week I was there. I could of slept better at home. Add to that, on two of those nights they picked up garbage, at three in the morning. Good luck sleeping through that.

Oh let's not forget about “termite guy”. On Sunday we were informed that someone was going to be coming by on Monday to treat for termites. What we were not told was that this guy was going to spend the entire day drilling holes in concrete and running a pumper truck.

As of June 3-10, 2017 this house is in the very early stages of construction. I suggest that if you are looking to relax in a peaceful environment sometime during the summer 2017 you might want to look somewhere else, not here and not anywhere in this neighborhood. I suggest you look for something at least a mile down the road.

Overall this was possibly the WORST vacation I have ever been on. I left here more stressed out than when I arrived.

Owner's Response: As the new owners of the cottage, we would like to thank you for your honest review. We are saddened to here that your vacation was not what you had hoped for. Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather, the time the county picks up trash, nor the timetable of construction on other homeowners' property. The cottage is a "basic" rental rate, which does not include towels. We do however provide fresh linens for all beds. Towels are available upon request to guests through Shore Details, who service our cottage. A park grill also is available for outside grilling. For fire safety reasons it is not located under the home and grilling should NOT take place under the home. Thank you again for your review.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

Felt right at home Hatteras holiday is a great get away perfect for what we needed. The location was fantastic steps from the beach a short walk or drive to town close to ferry. This property is very comfortable and relaxing falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and the breeze coming through the window was heavenly. I will definitely return and highly recommend staying here. Darren & Lisa
