Well furnished outdoor decks are comfortable for sunbathers and sunsets.

About John or Pat Rice

Hatteras Island is home to us. We are retired schoolteachers from Ohio who have vacationed here for 45 years. When we had the opportunity we built a home and moved here. After ten years, we still love this island we call home and look forward to many years of happy island living.

John or Pat Rice purchased this cottage in 2004

Why John or Pat Rice chose Cape Hatteras

After Hurricane Isabel we decided to buy a rental property by the beach. Hatteras Holiday was available and we were able to purchase it, known then as Shell-finder. We live in Buxton and had always vacationed in Frisco, so Hatteras, only ten miles away, was a learning experience for us. We have learned to love Hatteras and spend many days at Hatteras Holiday. Our children and grandchildren think of our cottage as their vacation home. The neighborhood is wonderful, made up of vacationers and summer residents. It is safe, quiet, and welcoming, a great place for anyone who wants to get away from hectic every day life and relax.

What makes this cottage unique

Hatteras is a village, home to many of our local people and charter boat families. There is a grocery store, a hardware, good restaurants, a library, a museum, the Coast Guard base, great marinas, and quiet island living. You can walk to everything in Hatteras or you can ride your bike anywhere. If you like more excitement, you can drive an hour to Nags Head for shopping and golf. If you want to step back in time, you can take the free ferry to Ocracoke and spend the day.

Overall this cottage was wonderful!!!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for my family. Plenty of room, clean, and comfortable. The queen bed my husband and I slept in was cozy.

A great perk were the two bathrooms. No waiting for bathroom time and plenty of opportunity to use it as you needed it.

We played games and ate dinners on the lovely screened in porch. The kitchen was fully accessible with everything you could possibly need or want. Loved having the laundry room. It's wonderful to go home from a vacation with all clean clothes.

The living room was spacious and the furniture was relaxing and comfortable.

The convenience of the ocean being so close was a great advantage. We loved our daily beach time and the total relaxation and fun it provided us. The beach chairs and boogie boards available for our use were awesome. Outdoor shower was great in getting off all the beach sand before going back into the cottage.

The one disadvantage to this stay was that the week went by too fast and we didn't want to leave.

This was such a memorable trip for all of us. We have great hopes to return again for many more years to come.

Owner's Response: Sandy, Thank you for your positive comments. Having two bathrooms and an outdoor shower is a plus, we updated all three over the past two years and will continue with updates over the winter. Shore Details has the credit for keeping our cottage so clean, they do an excellent job. We keep the porch screened, one because we like it and because our guest allways comment how much they like it. After a winter Nor - Easter and the screens blow out I am often tempted to not replace them but then think of comments such as yours and and how much our family likes the screened porch, so we repair or replace them, almost every season. The furniture is ours and has traveled from all over the country with us to furnish Hatteras Holiday, we like it and are glad you do also. Being on the Island is great but being on the Island and close to the beach is what a beach vacation is all about, we are happy Hatteras Holidays location fits you well. When next you come to Hatteras you can take care of the vacation being to short and stay a little bit longer, always a good idea. When you come again please plan to stay at Hatteras Holiday. John and Pat

Couldn't be happier

  • 5 of 5

The listing was very accurate, and this very welcoming house has all the basics and is extremely clean and well-maintained. Tons of room under the house for your car and "stuff" including a large lockable storage shed, fish cleaning table, picnic table, charcoal grill, etc. Nice deck and screened porch with wooden outdoor furniture. Large fridge. Everything worked well, including (and this is a biggie for us) the internet/WiFi. It's less than a minute's walk to the boarded walkway that takes you over the dunes to the beach -- close enough to the house to hear the waves breaking. The owners live nearby and were very friendly, helpful and very quick to respond to our emails. Payment processing was a snap (the HomeAway phone app is highly recommended.) We're experienced OBX and Hatteras Island renters, and this is absolutely the best of the smaller units we've booked. Well, "smaller" is relative here; some of the homes on Hatteras are almost ridiculously gigantic. There was plenty of room in this unit for the five adults in our party. It's a one-minute drive to Hatteras Landing and the Ocracoke ferry terminal, and we took advantage of both. We also visited our favorite seafood shack on the island, "Hattersman", several times; it's is only a few minutes' drive north. Go ahead: book this one with confidence!

Owner's Response: Doug, You said it all. Pat and I are very careful to keep our cottage as you described it. We know the importance of there being availablity of smaller cottages like Hatteras Holiday, they are becoming rare. Families with small children who want to get away, be well located close to the beach and be on their own do find our cottage fits their needs. Thank you for staying with us and when you return to Hatteras. please remember Hatteras Holiday, your home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Sincerly John and Pat

Awesome cottage near the beach!

  • 5 of 5

Great location in Hatteras Village! Just steps from the beach and close enough to get a glimpse of the ocean and hear the waves from the cottage. We found the house, clean, well equipped, and ready for us to just show up and enjoy a week at the beach. John and Pat had everything we needed to enjoy the beach (chairs, umbrellas, towels, boogie boards, and outdoor shower) and everything we needed to cook and enjoy our time in the cottage. We spent most of our cottage time on the screened-in porch; which is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, the sounds of the waves, and some occasional fireworks from down the beach. An easy walk to several restaurants and shops, great sunsets, and a few minute drive to a variety of shops, restaurants, and places to buy fresh off the boat seafood! We had the pleasure of meeting John during our visit and they were always very responsive to our emails as we planned our trip. It was a great opportunity for our family of four to enjoy time together and enjoy all that this quiet part of Hatteras Island has to offer!

Excellent. Very clean, private. 2 minutes walking distance to the ocean. Very convenient location, close to ferry, great coffee shop. Provided bikes were great, and we were able to get to the coffee shop, stores and marina. Grill was also a very useful addition. Definitely recommend.

Wonderful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about the cottage is as stated in the description. My husband and I stayed here while attending a friend's wedding. The cottage was very clean when we arrived and it is very well kept. The screened porch and open deck are wonderful. When you stay here you are steps to the beach and walking distance to the Marina and the Ferry. John and Pat were very responsive to our questions. I highly recommend staying here!

Wonderful Family Vacation Spot!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 stayed at Hatteras Holiday for 5 nights. It was all of our first time at OBX and the kids' first time seeing the ocean, so we were excited!!! We have a little 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house ourselves, so this cottage was just the right size for us! First of all, it was very clean! And, secondly, the location was perfect! It's a short walk to the beach and a short drive to the local shops. We were there mid-May, so there were not many people on the beach. The water was chilly, but not too chilly to prevent us from playing in the waves anyway! (We're from the north, so we're used to the cold!) The water was more calm toward the beginning of the day. We built sand castles, collected shells, watched the crabs crawl around on the beach. It was such a calm and peaceful way to spend a family vacation together. The storage room was awesome! The beach chairs especially came in handy! One of the days we were there, it was rainy, so we went to the museum around the corner about the lost ships of the Atlantic. It was really nice, and they even had a craft room with a seashell craft for all of us to do. One day, we took the ferry to Ocracoke Island. The ferry was just around the corner from the cottage. Somebody wrote in the guestbook to get there before 9am, and they were right! There was a much longer line later on in the morning. The Hatteras lighthouse was another highlight. It was a short drive away and definitely worth the stop. We did venture out to Nags Head for some shopping and more touristy activities with the kids. It's a long drive out there, though. I think it took us about an hour and a half. The local fish markets are awesome! The fish was so fresh and delicious. We enjoyed cooking the fresh fish back at the cottage and eating out in the patio. And we really enjoyed our dinner at Dinky's in Hatteras. One evening, we walked to Teach's Lair Marina across from Woodall and watched the sunset from the docks. It was absolutely beautiful! We loved everything about the cottage ~ the deck, the patio, the charcoal grill, the DVD collection for a rainy afternoon. And we had just about everything we needed there. We ended up buying handsoap for the bathrooms, but that was it. The owners and all of the locals were so nice! If we get the chance to go back to the Outer Banks for a vacation again, we would definitely stay at Hatteras Holiday in Hatteras! We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable vacation! Thank you John and Pat!!
