Laurel River Retreat : Riverfront…Secluded, Riverfront

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Just 25 miles north of downtown Asheville, Laurel River Retreat is a charming, comfortable and fully-equipped chalet. This is a truly unique property that sits on the bank of the scenic Laurel River in a 130-acre undeveloped forest. The Laurel River is the area's most scenic waterway. Its rapids are a practice run for Olympic kayakers. The river is stocked with trout and greatly enjoyed by area fly fisherman. For others the river is popular for bird watching, wild flowers, swimming, tubing and hiking.

Laurel River Retreat is just five miles from Hot Springs, North Carolina, where the Appalachian Trail intersects and famous for its natural hot springs spa.

No other house for at least one-half mile. No motorized vehicles are allowed except retreat visitor'. No all-terrain-vehicles, motorcycles, guns, or fireworks. The sounds throughout the day and night are the Laurel's rapids, the wind in the trees and the birds.

Secluded and serene, this is a place to sit on the large screened porch, two stone patios, or front deck and read, meditate, be. Its perfect for friends and family to gather and reconnect and a wonderland for kids.

A panoramic deck, 25 feet off the ground, spans the front and overlooks the Laurel River. A comfortable screened porch overlooks the surrounding forest. Each room has electric base-board heat with its own thermostat. A brick fireplace is the focal point of the lhe living room/dining room. Pinewood floors are in kitchen and living/dining areas. The stairway and the bedrooms are fully carpeted. Each bedroom has its own closet. The ground-level basement area has recently been renovated as a 300-square-foot heated work/play area with five windows overlooking the river and access through glass doors to patios on each side of the house.

The house is tastefully furnished in traditional antique and completely equipped with kitchen and bedroom supplies. The dining room has a large, circular, glass-top table on a cypress trunk base with chairs. An eight-foot-long picture window faces out to the deck, bringing in the sky, mountainside, and river. One of the upstairs bedrooms has an outside balcony with sliding glass doors. Enjoy original art in every room.

About Robert FitzPatrick

We consider it one of our greatest fortunes in life to have found Laurel River Retreat more than 14 years ago. Developing it, enjoying it, and sharing it have been among our highest enjoyments.

We live and work in Charlotte, NC. Robert is a writer/consultant. Terry is a professional artist. Her paintings are on exhibit in galleries in Charlotte and in corporate and private collections. (Some are on the walls of the house.)

It is our great pleasure to share this treasure with rental guests.

Almost every year, we have sought to improve Laurel River Retreat.

Two years ago, we completely remodeled the larger upstairs bathroom, adding windows, all new lighting, ceramic tiles and river stones and a signature stained glass in the beautiful walk-in shower.

In 2012, we totally remodeled the kitchen, with ceramic counter tops, wood ceiling, an bar/island with antique barnwood, an ultra-quiet dish waster and a disposal. We also now have high speed internet service, satellite cable and free long distance phone.

Above all, Laurel River Retreat is unique because of its location. It sits almost invisibly among poplars, mountain laurel and hemlocks on a hill overlooking the Laurel River and Laurel River Trail. The sounds of the river rapids envelop the house. The water, tree canopy and hillside breezes keep it cool in the summer. It is well insulated and heated in cold months. The fireplace adds a cozy warmth.

Laurel River Retreat offers a respite from the pressures and routines of daily life. It is an opportunity to connect with nature -- to hear it, smell, feel it, and truly be in a beautiful natural environment; yet also enjoy the comforts and conveniences of a well equipped home.

Secluded and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The Cabin had everything you would need, and is hidden on the hillside over the Laurel River. Only challenge is navigating around the Hikers to get to the Cabin!! All Beds were very comfortable, very clean and well maintained. Screen Porch is a great amenity that allows you to listen to the rushing river, while enjoying a Glass of Wine or Cocktail. Highly recommend this rental for any family, or a Romantic Weekend Getaway.

Hard Property to Rate

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time! There were some great and some not so good things. Owner was very considerate for our comfort. Cabin was well maintained. Views were incredible. River access did not need a car. Kids could tube by walking down the hill to the creek. Absolutely loved the upstairs showers with its windows. Kitchen was very well equipped. On the negative side --the driveway was not passable without "growth" touching our minivan on both sides. Very nerve-wracking when thinking about the price of cars! Driveway was flat until the very end and very long. Must follow directions to find the driveway in the weeds. Driveway was the biggest drawback. The living area (with the couch) was very, very small. However, if you didn't have kids and hubby that are six feet tall and/or no rainy days, it might be adequate. Musty smell in cabin --but probably typical for a cabin the smokies. Bathroom linens were lacking. This didn't bother my husband and sons, but mismatched and scratchy towels aren't what I expect for a room over $100 night. Such a shame with such a beautiful shower! Very hard to rate this property. The washing machine did break on the day of our arrival, but not a big deal for us. The negatives might not be a big deal for some, but might be a deal breaker for others. Our family had a wonderful time!

Fantastic location

You will be hard-pressed to find a cabin with a better location or host. Right on the Laurel River, secluded & private, close to Hot Springs. We return every year.

Absolutely phenomenal!

  • 5 of 5

This chalet and property on the Laurel River is absolutely phenomenal for a restful, secluded break. The woods and river are truly quiet and peaceful. There's only foot traffic along the river during the daytime. The evenings are dark - free of light pollution, and the chorus of the tree frogs and cicadas, etc. at night is the only sound over the rushing of the river below. The home, itself, is the perfect balance of modern convenience and rustic character. We spent our days hiking the trail while hubby fished the river. It was lovely in the early spring so we didn't avail ourselves of the deck, firepit or grill because of the chilly weather, but this is as close to a perfect retreat as one can get - fully equipped for a great time in a sylvan setting! Hot Springs is a quaint town just a few minutes up the road on the Appalachian Trail, with eclectic dining and shopping. I can't say enough about this property and location - it is truly a hidden gem for folks that want some quality alone time with family/friends.
