Interaction with Guests
We live about 100 yards away from the cottage and will be happy to help you with any questions, directions, recommendations of what to do in the area, etc.
I am originally from Ireland, but have lived in Texas for about 19 years - most of it in this neighborhood. We are avid travelers and over the years when we traveled to Europe with our girls, we would have loved a service like Homeaway to help us find interesting places to stay with more flexibility than a hotel. (We have always preferred to steer clear of the hotel chains, resorts and heavily touristed areas.) Our goal is for you to experience your stay as a house guest rather than a hotel guest so you can have the type of relaxed and comfortable experience that we always seek in our travels. In addition to English, I also speak French and some German and I am currently taking Spanish lessons.
Aedin purchased this cottage in 2006
We like this neighborhood so much that when we moved house about seven years ago, we just moved 3 blocks down the street!
Our home is on one acre in a very quiet and peaceful cul de sac and backs onto about 70 acres of undeveloped land. Sage Cottage is tucked away in a wooded area a short distance from our home. There is a very secluded in-ground pool available for our guests.
We enjoyed our stay here, especially the afternoon walks with our dog in the friendly neighborhood. Thanks for the breakfast items in the frig the first night. Unpacking left us depleted and it was nice not to have to go to a grocery store before retiring for the night.
We found the address a good spot from which to explore south Austin. We also appreciated Adin's recommendation of local places to eat breakfast tacos. Ample, safe parking.
We stayed Thanksgiving to Sunday. Aedin greeted us and actually let us check in early (10:30 am) since the house was ready. It was nice of her to provide a variety of breakfast on the 1st day. The house is a humble 2 story, just a little cold since it doesn't have central air, luckily it was in the 70's this time. The house is overall clean, plenty of towels and blankets. My kids who are 23, 20 and 16 had a great time exploring the wild. We went hiking almost everyday to places that were not even far from this house, and of course found plenty of places to eat nearby.
The only thing that I would say, not sure if Aedin would consider taking off those ceramics and dry walls on the drive way. We were afraid they were going to poke our tires. I think we prefer it to look more natural.
Our 3 dogs had so much fun also! Overall, this place is pretty good!
The house was perfect for what we needed, which was a pet-friends place to stay that's close to Austin, so we could attend a couple events in Austin and not worry about our pups. The owners are very friendly, and live close in case you need anything, but aren't overtly "there" like some owners can be which was great. Our only real complaint would be the driveway to the cabin - its recommended that you have a truck if you plan to drive down it. Very rough. Other than that, great place. Would stay again.
We had a very comfortable few nights at the cottage. It is very quiet and peaceful. It definitely feels like the country but it's still very close to downtown. The hosts have thought of many details, like soap and shampoo, and breakfast foods. Comfortable bedding and nice towels. Very clean! We had some guests for dinner one night and we had everything we needed for entertaining - even board games! I'd love to return.
The goods- beautiful area, nice shade trees, Aiden was a wonderful host. When I arrived beginning of December the weather was perfect, the area quiet, deer were (lots of deer) wandering around the neighbor hood, and it was a great place to relax. Highways to town and surrounding areas are close by and
shopping and dining establishments are with in ten minutes drive. Interstates are close by so a trip to San Antonio is pretty easy (Be aware the Alamo is really crowded). Barbecue is close by north and south (Texas magazine has best rated Austin area BBQ-but try Valentinas which is the closest good one and my favorite).
Washer and dryer in out back shed.
The not so goods-you really only have two choices going north to Austin proper, construction to widen one starts this summer. Be aware, Austin drivers did nothing to negate their reputation for aggressive driving.
The house has no dressers. Be prepared to live out of your suitcase. Only one toilet, bath/shower. There is no TV so bring an ipad or kindle. Internet is around 0.5 MB so streaming content isn't really an option unless you can down load movies and watch later. Forget sports lest you want to go to a sports bar (couldn't watch college bowl games). Kitchen is set up for light breakfast, most of my meals were BBQ I brought home to eat later.
Austin has some awesome restaurants so I assume you won't be eating at home much.
Stairs are steep, mobility issues beware. My 55 yo knees took some time to get used to. Fireworks are legal and during xmas to New Year's, lots of booming, new years eve didn't stop till around 230a and I had to get up to got to airport at 0430.
Dog parks good-onion creek (closest one with water, lots of places to run, Red Bud (go early but our favorite), Walnut creek, and circle C (not an off leash park per se, but in back many early AM dog walkers do so off leash). Manchaca vet was great if you have an issue (https://www.yelp.com/biz/manchaca-village-veterinary-care-austin-2) and need a vet.
Dog not so goods, area yard not fenced, if your dogs roam, not so good. Weather was nice, i could keep doors open so dogs could go in and out but summer might be an issue. My 10 year old lab had issues with stairs, I eventually moved downstairs. My lab had bad anxiety due to fireworks (which aren't allowed every year, depends on rain and fire risk)
I would definitely stay again, but at different time of year.
My friends and I had such a pleasant stay in the cottage. Aedin was very organized and informative on several local attractions. Also, had the kitchen stocked with breakfast food for us. The cottage was in a very quiet location which made it a nice, relaxing getaway! Will definitely be returning for another stay!
