This review is for the people who may be thinking the same way I was and hoping they can learn from my experiences. This is not intended to attack the owners or their views, but I'll talk about difference in views, my thoughts on interacting with them, and try to give a fair review on the house itself. (and I'm sure they will leave comments to justify their positions)
For however long I've been renting houses, I always thought I rent the SPACE which COULD accommodate X number of people. And if I decide to bring additional people, I would be sharing my rented space and we have to manage the sleeping arrangement. It'll be tight, but I sign up for it. That was my thought process. The owners apparently had another view. When I informed them we might have another family staying, they told me they "never allow more than 6 people", but they "can make an exception for additional $xxx" (they demanded to pay double). This "exception" price went down a bit after I negotiated. We were initially 9 people but at the last minute we became a party of 10 (added one niece). At this point, I was still thinking kids can sleep in the living room like a camp out. They would enjoy that. BIG MISTAKE. Upon arrival, owners wanted to know how many we are so I said 10. "TEN? YOU SAID NINE! YOU SAID NINE!!! NO WAY! NOO WAAY!!" He was very aggressive and I just could not communicate with him. I really didn't see what was causing such aggravation because I was still looking from my point of view, renting a space. It's not like I brought 30 people but they acted as if I did.
Maybe to their mind, they were only getting paid for 6 people and having more people should cost more (for the same amount of space). It's their house and their rule so I should respect that. If they were more calm, we probably had a better outcome. But after hearing the screams, my other family decided to go home and kids could not spend time together for our annual event.
The house itself was actually nice. Good space for 6 (3 full size beds), a large living area with a long couch and a futon convertible sofa (ironically it would've been great for kids). And no shoes allowed in the house (all carpeted) which is a plus. They are very quick to respond to emails for questions.
Since the owners live right across, they do look over your shoulders and watch every move you make from their window, which didn't make a good impression. We only stayed a night and went home. It was a hard lesson learned. 6 means 6!
The owners were very accommodating. Everything was as advertised. The house is very clean and it has everything you need for a stay in the country.
Average house. Site made it confusing on what place I was renting. Homeowners live across for side house.
