Breathe Deeply, A Cozy Austin Cabin

Bedrooms 1
Space 390 sq. ft.
Property type cabin

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 2

A stone throw south of the Austin City Limits, this cabin is situated in 2.5 wooded acres. While not in the class of a bnb, it is comfy, private and quiet. The land is inhabited by deer, raccoon, fox, owls, lizards and butterflies. There is an old stone well filled by an aquifer (legend states the well was built by Ben McCullough; the civil war hero). A large back yard is used for walks, bonfires and golfing/batting balls. Lounge in the dappled sun on the patio near a running pond surrounded with gardens. Prepare a leisurely bar-b-que. Talk late into the night by the fire pit.

This 100+ yr old cabin has been revived and furnished with love. Time seems to stop while soaking in the deep old claw tub filled with endless hot spring water . Drifting to sleep, become aware of crackling in the wood burning stove, a train whistle and the trickling pond. Breakfast choices are street tacos or pecans?

Its possible you'll be tempted to stay all day. However, the center of Austin or San Marcos, with music, swimming, fishing and kayaking are just 15-25 minutes from this retreat. (Circuit of the Americas is 18 miles through country roads.)

Included in price:

heating with wood burner &/or electric heater. Host can prep the fire. Firewood complementary AC for the summer/fall plus ceiling fan

About Tamara Trager

I'm a semi retired pediatric social worker. I grew up around the states and in south east asia. Went to college in Conneticut, Mexico, on World Campus Afloat and finally years later, with lots of gaps for traveling, graduated at the University of Texas in Austin. After my two sons were successfully launched; one's an elite athlete and fireman and the other an aspiring physician assistant, I began renovating the property as a nature preserve and guest house. I have now successfully hosted 100 plus guests and have expanded my exposure in hopes of enjoying an ever growing variety of guests. I love hosting travelers and focus on making sure your travels are as pleasurably memorable as mine have been.

Tamara Trager purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Tamara Trager chose Texas

As a child, I always fantasized living in an old wooden home with lots of windows in a picturesque setting; the types often seen in the Grimm's fairy tale pictures. When I was ready to buy, I only looked at one home, one not usually on the market, a home typical in the 30's in Austin but now in a large wooded area just outside the southern city limits. As I walked onto the property my heart said 'this is a grandmother's home!' and I was sold. Now I garden endlessly with the goal of attracting birds, butterflies and all the small creatures seeking a haven. After all the traveling, I've found my home and I am eager to share this haven with others.

What makes this cabin unique

I enjoy the fireflies and crickets, late night fires on the patio by the pond, enticing birds and humming birds to nest nearby, and, watching the fawns frolic. A moment later, I can spontaneously leave my retreat to join friends in town to enjoy Austin's great fare and Central Texas's wonderful rivers, all within minutes from my home.

Fantastic experience - best host we've had

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Breathe Deeply for 4 nights and, while the accommodations were stellar, Tamara really made our visit special.

This is really a perfect mix of VRBO and B&B - private space with A/C, full bath, wi-fi, kitchenette and a comfy bed AND Tamara is available by text at almost any time to help with whatever you need. She was great (and honest) with local recommendations about where to eat. She greeted us upon our arrival with a coffee cake, leaves the patio bug candles lit each night for you, is willing to stack a fire pit if you desire, and got us breakfast burritos one morning! We didn't want to run the AC all day while we were gone if we didn't need to, but then realized that may have been a bad choice... we texted her to ask if we'd made the wrong decision and she turned it on for us before we got home.

The location is great - right near everything (just a few minutes off major roads) but feels rural - it's quiet and rustic and we spent most evenings and mornings on the mostly private patio.

We couldn't have asked for more and will certainly return next time we need a place to stay in the Austin area.

And it's located in a very nice relaxing cozy spot! If you're looking for peace and quiet after a full day of adventure I highly recommend this cottage!

Beautiful, quiet, relaxing

The cabin is just what my wife and I were looking for. The firepit and serene garden area are great for unwinding. The bed was very comfortable and the sounds of the birds chirping in the morning left us leaving feeling relaxed and happy.

Comfortable, welcoming, clean, great bath tub

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in this little cabin behind Tamara's vintage home. We sat for hours both nights enjoying a wonderful fire and the starry starry night. Breakfast tacos each morning from a little restaurant around the corner were delicious. Tamara is a sweet hostess, great conversations we enjoyed together. The evening trains added a whimsical country flavor when they came by. The bed is very comfortable too.

All in all, a cozy cabin, comfy bed, gracious hostess and reasonable price made our stay one to remember and look forward to going back.

Fantastic getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Tamara had a beautiful fire waiting for us in the evening! Claw foot tub is perfection! The pictures don't do the quaint cabin justice. Beautiful and so comfortable. Had an amazing nights sleep. We felt like we were staying with family and definitely didn't want to leave. Tamara is the sweetest and an Austin soul. Very kind and welcoming! We will be back!

Years ago when people spoke about Austin they typically raved about the music. That's just the beginning of what they're saying these days. Austin is also home to a wonderful ballet, world-class museums, the US Grand Prix, the X games, and beautiful outdoor spaces with outrageous bar b que! You can just as easily spend your morning paddling the lake as you can strolling through a celebrated history museum. From fishing to theater to international racing; time your visit and you'll be able to experience your passion. Then retreat to your secluded cabin nestled in 3 acres of trees, butterfly gardens and an open field where deer graze. After exploring, this cabin emphasizes leisurely relaxation around a fire near the pond. 'Breathe Deeply, you are Here'

This BNB is attempting to renovate the natural flora thus helping the bees and butterflies. Consider this venue to be more like luxurious, private camping. Enjoy being outside with an evening fire then roll into a comfortable claw tub bath. The cabin is over 100 yrs old and recycled materials were used to renovate. This is not a high end venue with pristine gardens.
Pets are welcome.Cleaning after pet guests requires removing all dog hair. Upon arriving, please submit 25$ for cleaning. Weekend reservations require 2 nights maximum: either Fri, Sat or Sat, Sun. Last minute reservations for weekends not full can certainly stay for 1 night,. Asking is encouraged.
SXSW guests min of 3 days Call to ask about a 2 day min.
Grand Prix, Formula 1 reserve for entire event. Back country roads to Circuit of the America's does not require getting into Austin traffic. A popular venue, after race days is less than 10 minutes from the cabin o another country road.
The train, a half mile away, toots pretty regularly these days consequently, if you sleep lightly, or want he windows open, you may be awakened. There is white noise in the cabin to mask the train whistle and the bull frogs....
Inviting guests to join you by the fire is encouraged. A pet friendly adults playground, Moontower, with music, sand volleyball/horse shoes and great local beer is 2.5 miles north
