This town-home is incredibly private (we own and rent out both sides) and very pet-friendly and baby ready! This rental is impeccable. Pets are very welcome and we are obsessive about cleaning and maintaining our home for those who don't love pets! We are also able to fully set the house up for your baby. We've traveled with them ourselves and know how much easier is when you don't need to bring along a pack and play, high chair, toys, etc.! These items are neatly packed away out of sight for those without children. Please make sure to let us know if you'll need them during your stay.
The home is bright, airy and within a couple of short blocks to the beach. Each side has a private, fenced in backyard and a separate, private driveway. The kitchen is open and renovated with exposed beams and hardwood floors throughout both stories. Upstairs are two bedrooms, both with new queen beds and a full bathroom with a tub/ shower. Downstairs is completely open with a family room and dining area in the front and kitchen in the back. Off the kitchen is a cozy sitting room with wood stove. From there, french doors lead to a private deck. The unit gets great light throughout. There is also a half-bath on the first floor with a washer/ dryer dedicated to the unit.
The backyard is large and private, with plenty of room for your kids to play and BBQs to be had. The landscaping is professionally maintained and is gorgeous. You're welcome to bring your kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards and any other summer toys! There's plenty of room to stash them.
The house is within walking distance of all of the local restaurants, including Scratch Bakery (just ten buildings up the street) as well as the amazing locally made, Willard Scoops ice cream!

Hi! My name is Maggie and welcome to our perfect vacation spot! I'm in my late 30s and my family comes many, many generations from Maine on both sides - my mom from a long line of dairy farmers and my father from generations of sea captains and fishermen. He was the first generation NOT born on Cranberry Island. Instead, he was born in the bustling village of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. I myself am a builder and designer and take a lot of pride in providing all of our guests with the kinds of places that we'd like to stay in ourselves. Our standards for design, decoration and amenities are incredibly high and we want you to reap the benefits of this!
Maggie Birlem purchased this townhome in 2006
These two town-homes are located in Portland's hippest area, the Willard Beach neighborhood. Both units are fresh, stylish, super comfortable and perfectly appointed for your trip to Maine. The house is located just a quick two minute walk to the beach as well as to all of the local, award winning restaurants, cafes, bakeries and ice cream shops (yes, there THREE within walking distance of the house!). It's incredibly close to downtown Portland while maintains the privacy that you'd want on your vacation. Our pet friendly policy allows you not to stress with your pet on vacation but we also thoroughly clean and maintain the unit for those who have pet allergies or just aren't as appreciative of pets. You'd never even know a pet has stayed there before! We'd love to have you come stay in our affordable and perfect vacation spot!
We had a fantastic stay in Portland. This home had everything we needed and was decorated beautifully. The yard was perfect for our small dog and the location could not be beat.
I would not hesitate to book this again in the future and would recommend it for anyone considering a Portland vacation.
This is the third September we've spent here, and we continue to love it for its interior and exterior layout as well as the location. The inside is artistically decorated, both interesting and comfortable at the same time. We like that the first floor has two separate living rooms, one at each end of the unit. The kitchen is conveniently and amply set up, and the dining area is lovely. Actually there are 3 dining areas that we use: one: for breakfast at a cute table for 2 in the kitchen, one with a nice large table to serve a family and guests and then a round table on the deck, our favorite spot. Upstairs, the bedrooms are cozy and each are set up with air conditioning which is usually not necessary except for a hot summer such as this one. The shower is not only gorgeous but is the best we've experienced in our travels, hands-down.
Being outdoor worshippers, our favorite spots are the deck and yard. The trees over the deck provide beautiful dappled sunlight, making it a perfect place for all times of the day. There's also a grouping of chairs around a fire pit where we have enjoyed spending several evenings roasting marshmallows, talking with friends and gazing at the stars. What fun! The grassy yard provides a perfect basking spot in the sun along with space for an occasional game of fetch for our little Westie. There's even a storage cabinet by the deck and a shed on the other side of the lawn that's equipped with beach chairs, umbrellas and bicycles.
All this comes with the added bonus of a great location. It's an easy walk to the beach, to Scratch and the ice cream shop, not to mention a wonderful pet store complete with our little dog's new best friend, a gigantic, sweet-tempered borzoi! And then, Portland, Fort Williams, Two Lights and other local attractions are just a 10 to 15 minute drive. This truly is a perfect home away from home complete with owners who have always been friendly and responsive to our needs. A gem!
This is a good house in a great location--strategically close to the wonderful South Portland beach, Willard Scoops Ice Cream (yum!) and Scratch Bakery (yum yum!). The house is clean, attractive, and comfortable as a home away from home. There were a couple of quirks that could be (fairly) easily overcome--hopefully these will get some attention:
- The bathroom sinks were impossibly small, and the upstairs one was also located under a shelf, which made washing and tooth-brushing difficult.
- Some bulbs were out, and one bedroom needed an extra reading light. (I ended up using my camping headlamp).
- The shower lacked a non-slip mat (at least as far as we could tell). I slipped & almost fell in the tub, which could have ruined an otherwise good trip.
- There was a lengthy list of check-out duties to perform, more so than we have seen elsewhere in our HomeAway and airbnb experience. Seems kind of picky & unnecessary, since I'm sure the house is cleaned & serviced between visits.
But, mostly, a good house in a really great location. We had fun!
When visiting, be sure to plan for plenty of time on the beach, a trip to nearby Fort Williams/Portland Head Lighthouse, and a visit to the Fort Preble ruins & its lighthouse.
My children loved having plenty of space to relax and having the beach and a park within walking distance was perfect. My teenager enjoyed biking and exploring. We all loved being able to quickly reach all the sites we wanted to visit including light houses, historical sites, the beach, Portland for a bit of city life including art galleries, and a ferry ride for a day on Peak's Island. We loved walking down the street to grab a baked goodie or gourmet sandwich from the Scratch Bakery, eating some artisan pizza at Ottos and having some soft serve at Red's. And it was nice to head back "home" each evening to grill up some dinner and sit by the outdoor fire to relax. We loved living the Maine life. Thank you for sharing your home with us. It was very hard to leave! We will visit again!
We had a wonderful stay at this toddler friendly little place. It was a relief not to haul pack n play, plates and toys with us. Our little guy was quite content with all that was there. We also enjoyed it. Wonderful open space for playing, downstairs, and quiet cozy rooms, upstairs. We enjoyed all the nearby State Parks, as well as the local cafes. We didn't want to leave!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We have a rental that we are just putting into service and took away so many good ideas for decorating and equipping a rental. We were there as a couple for a night and then were joined by our son and his girlfriend and could have stayed a week, cooked in the well-appointed kitchen and walked on beautiful Willard Beach nearby - as well as exploring the city just 10-15 min drive away. Near a great bakery and in a nice neighborhood The apartment is clean and spacious. We loved it!
