The LOFT

Warm & inviting colorful space, with amazing views of the harbor, and beach below. Cresting waves on the jetty, sailing boats, wind surfers, and visiting wildlife are only a few of the sites to enjoy while sipping gourmet coffee in the "Crow's Nest Seat" by the expansive bay windows.

Take your coffee along for an early morning stroll on the beach. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need for a great seafood dinner, which you can buy fresh from the Fishing vessel "Sadie K" in Pillar Point Marina 3 blks east, or hop on the bikes and cruise over to have great Italian food at the Mezza Luna.

The bath features a roomy walk-in shower, with on demand piping hot water, so it never runs out.

Enjoy a complementary bottle of wine under the stars on the furnished deck overlooking the beach. Then hop into the comfy queen bed, in the glow of the remote control wall fireplace, and watch you favorite cable channel, (choose from over 100 entertainment or music channels) .Beatspill & DVDs are provided for your listening & viewing pleasure, or choose an interesting book from the shelf.. Have a relaxing night's sleep lulled by the sound of the waves.

Guest Access

Furnished Beach side Pavilion and lounge chairs & BBQ. There are 2 bicycles also available on a first come first serve basis, Beach chairs, body boards, beach balls, buckets shovels, folding chairs, umbrellas, etc are stored in the a hut in the private gated parking area.

Interaction with Guests

I am in and out of the gallery, but am always on call for guests concerns., and am generally around weekends during the day.

The Neighborhood

A short stroll or paddle to Mavericks Big Wave ocean beach & tide pools, shell gathering, a short 3 block walk or bike ride to Pillar Point Harbor Marina Sea Food & Shops! The local yacht club is a few doors down, and there are boat and equipment rentals the same distance. Amazing hiking on the pillar point bluff to hidden beaches, wildlife & Bird watching at the estuary across the road.

Getting around

Marina is an easy 3 blk walk, or take the bikes! There is a new bike path that goes all the way down the coast to Half Moon Bay, about 3 miles south.

Other Things to Note

Beach Towels, folding chairs and umbrellas are available. If you have larger pets (small pet accepted) or kids, please get in touch so we can discuss features that may or may not work for you. No parties or loud music. This is my home also, and I expect the property and neighbors to be treated with respect!

Greetings! My name is Michael and I run the Tribal Art Gallery located below the Loft & above the Garden Flat.. I live in the Redwood Forest in the Santa Cruz Mts, but am close by & always available for the needs of guests. The gallery is by appointment, so foot traffic is minimal

Why Mike Auliso chose California

Princeton by the Sea, where the property is located, about 9 square blocks in size, was the original center for crab & general commercial fishing in the Bay Area, and still is mostly Boat repair, crab trap storage, the Yacht Club, boat rentals, and other marine related businesses or local artists. There is no commercial manufacturing allowed, and generally businesses must be marine or art related, like my gallery. Basically Pillar Point is a working Harbor, with a few artists & craftspeople in residence.

The 'Romeo Pier' in front of our property was the unloading point for fishermen's catch since the early 1800s. Many of the 'crabbers' have gone, and the community is slowly turning back into the small creative enterprise, private residence & artist colony, that it was back in the 1920's through the 1960's, when many famous artists and musicians lived in the old warehouses.

We are continually working to beautify the old buildings & general area, particularly the 3 blocks of beach road between the Harbor Marina, and West Point Beach where we are located; so that hopefully soon, there won't be as much of a contrast between the two areas, without having Princeton be 'touristy' like the Marina.

Sometimes it's interesting to get out of your normal environment, and experience something completely different, and that is why I was so taken with the property. Also it is the closest building to Mavericks Big Wave surfing beach, which to surfing enthusiasts is what a cozy chalet at the foot of Mt Everest would be to avid climbers. We have a lot of water sports and fishing activity in the harbor, as well as wonderful hiking on the Point & bird watching at the estuary across the street.

What makes this apartment unique

Half Moon Bay has a quaint downtown with lots of amazing restaurants, and a variety unusual Art, as well as amazing shopping opportunities. Renting the Loft is my way of sharing the HMB experience I enjoy with others.

about hesitating to review a place I want so bad to be available next time we're planning to visit HMB (for the umpteenth time).



My (now) wife and I rented the upstairs unit for four days during our wedding weekend and we couldn't be more pleased with the experience.



We'd mentioned in passing that we were getting married and Michael and his team blew us away with an amazing first impression that included a welcome basket with wine and treats (plus music playing!) upon arrival.



The pictures do the rest of the place justice and don't lie -- it's an incredibly peaceful place with myriad options to have fun nearby: a short walk to The Old Princeton Landing (great bar!), stand-up paddle or kayaking in the bay, a short hike to view Mavericks, fishing charters, and lots of great food options.



And of course it's RIGHT ON THE MOTHER F-IN BEACH with a shared backyard patio type area (con Koi pond) and master chef area that's great for BBQ'ing. Perhaps better is the space just off the private parking area where you can settle into chairs and enjoy a book and/or glass of wine from a perch overlooking the dogs and families and fellow tourists taking the area in. Don't let the the shared component of the BBQ area deter, unless you're trying to duck federal agents and not be seen by anyone or something. It made for a cool way to meet the "neighbors", who were super cool and ended up sharing GIANT fresh salmon with us and visiting friends. The more the merrier!



Last couple points:



- unlike a bunch of places I've stayed this place has ben meticulously customized with guests in mind. All drawers etc. (even the shower settings) are labeled so you don't feel lost acclimating to the place. You never feel like you're crashing at someone's place while they're gone.



- we took our dog and he loved it! it's a very dog friendly beach with miles of beach for dogs to run. I think he slept for four days after.



I'm sure my wife could add tons of commentary about the cool little touches with the decor and whatnot, and I surely appreciated it, but I'll save you my surely feeble attempt.



In sum: never stay here. Ever. It's terrible and Michael is not accommodating or welcoming at all... ;o) In fact, just stay away from Half Moon Bay. I've heard Pacifica is where all the cool kids stay anyway...

One of the Best Vacation Rentals we have encountered

Outstanding

This was our second visit staying at Mike's property. It was fantastic and we love the location (great beach access, restaurants to walk to and hiking trail access too) and accommodations, everything was terrific!

Regarding the accommodations ... We stayed in the loft this time and Mike provided everything one would need for cooking etc. We definitely will be coming back to stay again. We love this place! 😎

The Third FLoor Beach Loft is one of a kind rental

Michael and Carol do a superb job of presenting their property at Mavericks Beach to potential renters. The apartment has everything one needs, just bring food or eat out in the nearby eateries. The website is very accurate and thorough in describing what's in the apartment and what the area is like.

Bailey the dog and I drove over the hill (local parlance) just to sit at the spacious aparment windows and "drink" in the harbor and the world beyond. (I really mean drink a glass of sauvignon blanc that Michael provides.) I used Michael's Bushnell binoculars to watch the huge Coast Guard ship doing maneuvers beyond the breakwater. The coast brings sun, fog, drizzle and sometimes rain, so be prepared for whatever.

The beach is popular with well-behaved dogs that romp around fetching balls from owners or dog walkers. (The early AM and evenings offer the most solitude.) Have you ever seen a small dog wearing a life vest sit calmly on the board while his owner paddled out into the harbor? Or, watched while 2 (!) little dogs did the same thing with another board/owner. Amazing.

I love Romeo's wharf, the aging structure just out the window, that used to process sardines, abalone, etc. History abounds. Think of whiskey running during 1920's prohibition with the feds at your heels. (They used to hide it under the floating seaweed until the coast was clear. Literally. )

Drive down the airport road to the far end to the famous Moss Beach Distillery and Restaurant. Weekdays are best when you might snag a seat on the patio overlooking the Pacific.

A reviewer expressed a desire for something closer to a "hotel" atmosphere. May I suggest that you drive 6 miles down the highway and pay $700 per night at the Ritz Carlton. Or, smarter, park in the RC lot and have a drink on their beautiful oceanfront patio. Be sure to enjoy the walk along the cliffs by the golf course.

Owner's Response: Gloria and her clever dog Bailey are the best guests you can imagine! It puts a smile on you face just chatting with them, as you could see Gloria genuinely enjoyed watching all the quaint harbor activity, and Bailey was happily aware of all canine movement on the beach, as well as being a very well mannered little guy. A bonus was that Gloria is very familiar with the HMB area, and had quite a few insightful observations to share. All in all They are a lot of fun to have visit and spend time with, I highly recommend this interesting traveling couple to all hosts! Thanks Gloria & Bailey, please come back soon! :0) Mike

Unique Loft Apartment, Great Decor

The loft was very nice, and all the details were wonderful. The apartment had wonderful artwork, which makes sense, since Michael owns the gallery downstairs. The bedding was all very comfortable, and the kitchen was well appointed. I loved the rain shower, but didn't take advantage of it as much as I would have liked given the drought conditions.

The harbor/bay view was incredible. The windows seemed like an almost non existent barrier between us and the ocean. There were binoculars available for watching the ocean life, and we saw numerous harbor seals.

I was a bit disappointed in the beach itself, which ended up being more of a local dog park. Not quite the location I want to run around barefoot, but a gorgeous view all the same.

Michael was also extremely informative for a rental owner - providing many details about the area, current activities, and dining options. His expertise was much appreciated on our trip.
