Overview

About the property

Secluded Forest Retreat, 3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, Sleeps 10,

Rock Haven is a beautiful and modern multilevel cabin built in front of a limestone cliff that towers above it, located in a secluded forest valley adjacent to Natural Bridge State Park and near the Red River Gorge. It easily accommodates 10 persons. Come and feel the excitement of being in the middle of the forest, enjoy the beautifully designed wood interior, and relax in this comfortable vacation home. If you are interested in staying at Rock Haven, we prefer you click on "Send a message" instead of clicking on "Request to Book."

The lovely spaces in Rock Haven include four bedrooms including one on the middle level, one on the lower level with two beds, and the two loft bedrooms (both without doors) , 2 ½ baths, a whirlpool room with a view of the rocky cliff, a fully equipped and roomy kitchen, an inviting spacious living room, a fantastic sun-room to relax in, a front deck surrounded by the tall trees, and a back deck almost within arm’s reach of the cliff. All linens, blankets, and towels, and some basic kitchen items such as spices and napkins are provided so all you need to bring is food, drink and personal items to have the perfect stay. The deep woods and the cliff-side location moderate the summer heat and winter cold and ensure that only the sounds of nature are heard. In addition, the location is close to the area's attractions--the many arches, hiking trails, scenic drives, and a surprising variety of restaurants.

Cell phone service is available--best via Verizon, spotty for other providers unless one goes to the top of the hill. There is a TV and a DVD player, so feel free to bring your own movies for family entertainment. Enjoy the freedom that comes from getting away from the pull of WiFi! Discover, or experience again, how rewarding it is to quietly sit on the deck and to enjoy the sounds of the forest both in early morning and in the evenings. This is a wonderful way to experience nature. You can see more pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/arvinvos/RockHaven.

About Corrie Vos

My husband, Arvin Vos, and I were living in Bowling Green, KY, where he taught philosophy and I practiced psychology, when together with our daughter we bought Rock Haven. We have had marvelous family times there with our five children and grandchildren. Now that we have retired to Michigan and our children have established themselves in places across the country, we especially enjoy spending time together at Rock Haven.

Corrie Vos purchased this cabin in 2002

Why Corrie Vos chose Natural Bridge

The moment we saw Rock Haven, built almost against a towering cliff, surrounded by forest, built of local lumber inside and out, we knew we wanted to own it. Over the years we have added several rooms, modified the most rustic features to increase comfort and convenience, and built a beautiful oak spiral stairs leading up to the upper level. We are happy to share it with our guests, which defrays some of our costs, and provides some work for our housekeepers.

What makes this cabin unique

We love our beautiful and comfy cabin, the rock climbing opportunities, the cycling in the Gorge, eating at restaurants like Miguel's pizza and Rock House, and the fantastic scenery and hiking, but what we love most is that it is a quiet and peaceful place to enjoy being in nature.

Beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic all around! I stayed with my family - 4 adults and 1 teenager - and we all felt comfortable. Everything is exactly as advertised! We were attending a wedding 9 miles away and found this location perfect. I was baking the cake and the kitchen with the open pantry was perfect for all my supplies. The kitchen table was great spot to set up for games. It was a quiet location that felt very private.

Tip: Read the directions the owner posts about how to get there - and write them down. Our cell service did not work once we got to Slade so we did not have GPS. The directions are very clear. (It would be great if the Street signs were more prominent because I missed the Glencairen road a couple times). Once you have been there once though, it is to find.

I would come back again and I would recommend this property!

Great home away from home! Beautiful cabin in an even more beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

Instructions made it easy to find. Very clean & well kept. Quiet & secluded yet close to all the trails & sights of the area. Whirlpool tub is great after all the hiking. Very spacious.

On our visit the solar lights leading up the outside stairs were not functioning, only thing that needs fixed. And not really a big issue, just would be nice if they were working.

There were only 3 of us so we did not utilize the whole house but you could easily accommodate a group. Not having cell service took some getting used to but it also encourage conversation

Rock Haven is located in Rocky Hollow, a valley on Mill Creek upstream from Mill Lake. It is just off the Glen Cairn-Rogers road, between Highways 11 and 15. Natural Bridge State Park is a five minute drive away. The Mountain Parkway is about five miles away is. Going in the other direction is Muir Valley about 8 miles away. In addition to being close to many of the best known rock climbing sites in the area, there are numerous hiking trails in the Red River Gorge and at Natural Bridge State Park. In the summer on Friday and Saturday evenings there is folk dancing near the Park's visitor center. There is a public swimming area at the park, open in season. Most of all, the valley location of the cabin is a quiet wooded retreat where it is possible to reconnect with nature, experience the rhythms of the day and evening. In summer, the trees around the cabin provide the comfort of shade, especially on the deck, and in late fall and early spring the cliff protects from the wind, and so the deck is a lovely place to sit in the sun. Nearby there is opportunity to enjoy a Zipline at Cliffwood and also a Via Ferrata. For those interested in rock climbing, Muir Valley and the many other sites that the area is famous for, are within a short drive. If you enjoy sight-seeing, then taking the loop drive from Pine Ridge through the Gorge to Slade is a wonderful introduction to the area. Even better is cycling the same route.
