Safe & Warm(ish) but not clean !!

  • 3 of 5

My family, a party of 5, stayed at this apartment for a week commencing Boxing day 2017 and have to say that although it was in a safe feeling area and provided much welcome warmth from the sub zero temperatures outside, it was a let down in terms of cleanliness!

We made a 3 flight journey from the UK to reach this appt. and were looking forward to our NYC holiday but spent the first night trying to get a hold of the owners in order to complain about the state of the accommodation!

The advertisement that swayed us to book this Brooklyn appt. portrayed the place as being an old, charming property that had recently been refurbished and whilst the first part of that claim could be said to be correct, there is no validity in the 'newly refurbished' bit! The place is seriously in need of work to bring it up to standard, for example (1) door frames and skirtings were rough and in need of a good sand down and repaint, some needed replacing because of decay. (2) The splash back in the kitchen was seriously rusty, (3) the window in the small double bedroom would not seal properly and was seriously draughty (4) The smoke alarm in that same bedroom was hanging down from its wiring.

Then comes the cleanliness of the place, we were shocked by how dirty it actually was (1) All curtains were filthy, when they should have been white they were grey with black mould in places (2) all light fittings were covered in a thick layer of dust making bulbs virtually opaque (3) the bed base in the smaller double bedroom was appallingly stained and in desperate need of being replaced (4) the radiators were simply filthy and hadn't been cleaned in a long time (5) the rubber seal of the washing machine was just thick grime!

In short, we had to clean the place ourselves to make our stay remotely comfortable.

The owner 'Kermit' attended in person on our second evening and we raised our concerns with him. He said he was unaware of the condition of the place and by way of an explanation stated his cleaner was ill, was due to go into hospital and clearly hadn't been doing what she was expected to do. He said he would do what he could to remedy the situation and after exchanging pleasantries left....needless to say nothing was done at all!

Have to say, the ad for the appt. is somewhat misleading and indeed pictures the exterior of a totally different property however provided it was cleaned and offered at a cheaper price, you could do worse.

Owner's Response: We always strive for the utmost standards of cleanliness in our apartments, and we hope that you'll take the time to look at our other reviews, which clearly demonstrate the high level of cleanliness and attention to detail that we provide. We really care about every single guest having a wonderful stay. If you look over our other reviews, you'll see that just recently we received the review: "Cleanliness and comfort are a must and this place had it all!!! Before that: "Upon arrival we found the apartment to be very clean, organized and looking exactly the same as in the pictures." And just before that: "It was a beautiful place, updated but kept character. Wife loved the cleanliness." These are just a sample of reviews we've received from people from all over the world. As you can see, 96% of our reviews are four or five stars, with the great majority of those being five star reviews. In fact, our only other 3 star review is titled "Solid - recommended!" This review from this guest is the only bad review in our years of renting this apartment. They called to complain about cleanliness, and we immediately scheduled a time to meet with them to understand the issue. While the apartment was generally very clean, they had found several spots where there was some dust (some chandelier light bulbs, the top of curtains when viewed from a ladder). Even though the apartment was clean to the standard of all other guests who had stayed there over the years, we want EVERY guest to be happy. We immediately offered to have the cleaning lady come back the next day and make sure the apartment was absolutely spotless, bulbs and all. Remarkably, they weren't interested in having the cleaning lady come back! To be honest, it gave us the impression that the guest was complaining in an effort to negotiate a discount. If a significant issue ever comes up, we will of course discount a stay — e.g when the central AC broke two years ago, we immediately provided window AC units and substantially discounted that guest's visit. However, in this case, we could not justify giving a discount; the apartment was at a standard that had resulted in praise from all previous guests. This review simply does not reflect the level of love and care that we give the apartments. We hope you will take the time to read through the many years of reviews from all around the world, which paint a very clear portrait of the charm, style, warmth, character and cleanliness of our apartments. —The Owner

Baby's first vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We were supposed to visit Turks Caicos for our family vacation but unfortunately the hurricanes hit. So, we decided to take that trip to NYC that we've always dreamed of. While I would not recommend traveling to this city with two babies (ours are 21 mos and 6 mos) we did make memories!! The apartment and neighborhood felt very safe. The park around the corner was a life saver. Cleanliness and comfort are a must and this place had it all!!!

Great holiday spot!

  • 5 of 5

Hosted Thanksgiving here for family from out of town. It was a wonderful success. The dining room is huge and inviting, as are the comfy bedrooms. It's also an accessible location, making it easy to get to Williamsburg as well as the thick of the city.

I highly recommend this spot.

I loved this apartment! So quiet at night for sleeping. Within walking distance for the subway.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was in a safe neighborhood and within walking distance to the DeKalb St. Subway station. Very comfortable for 3-6 people. We were able to go anywhere in NY! I slept soundly and I usually don't in a big city. Beds were very comfortable. Apartment was so cute. We didn't get the cable TV to work but we did get Netflix. Too busy for TV anyways!

Quiet in the neighborhood, not glitzy or gentrified yet.

Home Sweet Home

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous apartment! Exactly like the pictures. Everything from the appliances to the bedding was top notch. A perfect retreat for our family of 6 (kids ages 15, 13, 11 & 9) after a busy day touring the city. The neighborhood was delightful. We were able to pick up all the food we needed at the local market and our kids enjoyed spending each evening at the neighborhood park. We felt completely safe and for NY standards, it is a very quiet neighborhood. Cannot say enough great things about this property. We hope to be able to come back and visit someday and will definitely stay here again.

Map

Car: not necessary

Straddling the neighborhoods of Bushwick, Brooklyn and Ridgewood, Queens, the apartment is 5 blocks away from the Dekalb Street 'L' train station in Brooklyn—one of the best subway lines in the city. Union Square, the heart of downtown Manhattan, is only 15 minutes away via a direct subway ride; Williamsburg, Brooklyn's stylish boutiques, bars and restaurants are only a 7 minute train ride away.

Ours is a quieter, more residential neighborhood, but it is in an exciting stage of growth. In the last 5 years there has been a huge influx of artists and creatives in our immediate area. As a result, there is now a solid (and rapidly growing) number of stylish cafes, restaurants, wine bars, art galleries, yoga studios, and a great 24-hour gourmet/organic grocery store all within a 10-12 minute walk from the apartment. There are also local Italian bakeries, Halal butcher shops, Equadorian bodegas, Polish food markets and the best tasting Mexican tamales we've ever come across. All relevant information can be found in our Guest Welcome binder in the apartment and we hope that you will explore these local gems during your visit.
