About Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager
I grew up in New Zealand, I lived in Vail Colorado for over 20 years teaching skiing and developing a unique program Dynamic Skiing for Life. My husband and I started coming to Maui to windsurf, surf and scuba dive in the 80s as a perfect way to continue our love of the outdoors but this time we were playing in the ocean instead of on the mountains. We fell in love with Maui and the north shore and we bought our property in the early 90s. With a lot of love and family help we created the Menehune Cottage for vacation rental from the original Hawaiian home on this property. We love the location which is close to everything we love to do and we have enjoyed sharing this with our guests. Maui is a special place with its mountains, ocean, rainbows, soft air, music and the people. We have made this our home and now instead we visit the mountains for a little skiing, but we always return home.
Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager purchased this Cottage in 1993
Why Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager chose Paia
3 mins walk to the beach, we can rig on the lawn and windsurf at the Kuau channel, close to everything we love and need - Paia is less than 5 mins away, also Baldwin beach for early morning runs and a couple of minutes from Hookipa beach - it is convenient and delightful
What makes this Cottage unique

Home away from home
We recently spent two nights with our two young boys. It was an absolutely perfect stay and I highly recommend it to anyone considering a stay in Paia. The cottage is charming with all the necessities you need to take care of a family. We enjoyed the short walk to mama's fish house and it was an easy drive to Paia which is a great town to spend time in. A big thanks to Anne for picking up some groceries for us in anticipation of our late night arrival. It made our first morning restful and relaxing and we really appreciated it.
Perfect private cottage! Would stay again.
Had a great trip. Loved Paia Town (nice homemade while we explored the more resort/touristy parts of the island). Had everything we needed, including plenty of towels and blankets, chairs and coolers. Definitely try the outdoor shower. Kitchen was well equipped, place was quite clean. Only two of us so we didn’t use the second bedroom. General store walking distance was very convenient, and we drove into town when we wanted to shop or get food (town is only a mile or so away but there are no sidewalks). Binder of recommendations was super helpful, too.
Off the beaten path yet conveniently located. Very well managed.
Clean cottage and quiet neighborhood, good location for this side of the island, a hidden treasure for the price. We will return to it next year if available. Highly recommend it to the travelers avoiding the mainstream madness of transient party vacationers and obnoxious group gatherings.
This is a charming and clean spot in a terrific location. Owner communication was excellent.
They had beach chairs and boogie boards to borrow! I’d recommend renting a car if you stay here...it’s a great jump off point for the road to Hana.
Charming cottage in such a cool area!
We had a great time staying at this Paia cottage! It was conveniently located for all of our adventures at the beginning of our trip including the sunrise bike ride down Haleakala, beach and snorkel day, and the Road to Hana! All of the local recommendations were very helpful as well. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
My friend and I LOVED it here
The place is tres cute and comfortable, private, quiet, clean, and well-stocked with the things you'll need. The fruit and chips on the table were a nice touch. Communication with the property manager was clear and timely. We met the owner who also lives on the property; she was personable -- warm and welcoming. We encountered the requisite wildlife in the place -- geckos in the shower, some insects that found their way in -- but nothing out of the ordinary for the tropics, and nothing to suggest we should question the cleanliness of the place. The fans kept the place comfortable during our stay. We enjoyed the graveyard across the fence. We also frequented Hookipa Beach and found literally dozens of sea turtles sunning themselves there - mid to late August, they aren't there all year. The Turtle Keepers were there, too, protecting and explaining. We also frequented Mama's Fish House, which is very close by -- no table reservations for weeks, but we enjoyed exquisite food and drinks, service to write home about, and the most beautiful view during the day at the back bar. This location also enabled us to spend pent 3 days traveling and perusing the Road to Hana, which starts just south of Pa'ia, getting acquainted with its nooks and crannies, taking turns being a passenger so we could immerse ourselves in the beauty. This home base was perfect for the trip we wanted to take.
