About the property

Spacious 4 Bedroom, 3 Bath; Minutes To Cultural And Natural Attractions

Enjoy all the Berkshires has to offer in our new (2014) restoration and outstanding renovation of the historic South Lee Schoolhouse. Perched on a hillside just across the road from the Housatonic River and Beartown State Forest in the hamlet of South Lee, just outside of Stockbridge, the 1892 schoolhouse has been converted into two spacious and comfortable post and beam homes with all modern amenities. Your host resides on site and is available to assist you during your visit in any way you may need (including granting you your privacy!)

Please be advised that booking requests will not be accepted until the owner has corresponded with you, and there is a window of 24 hours for this to occur. Best to send an email with a little information about your party first, then proceed to booking after we have had a chance to chat via email. I want to make sure the Schoolhouse is a good fit for you before we commit to each other!

We are just a few miles from the Exit 2 interchange on the Mass Pike, making it easy to find us, as well as to use us as your home base to explore the area.

With 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths, the Schoolhouse can comfortably accommodate 8 guests. The fully equipped gourmet kitchen is open to two lovely seating areas, one with a fireplace and the other with a flat screen TV, and the dining area. The private patio is equipped with a gas grill and large table for al fresco dining. Families with kids and dogs will enjoy a large grassy area abutting the woodlands at the rear of the 2-acre lot.

If it is cultural activities you enjoy, we are ideally located:

o 2 miles from Berkshire Theatre in Stockbridge

o 6 miles from Shakespeare and Company

o 6 miles from Berkshire Theatre in West Stockbridge

o 7 miles from Tanglewood (and we know a secret back way!)

o 9 miles from the Mahaiwe Theater in Great Barrington

o 11 miles from Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival

o 14 miles from the Colonial Theater, Barrington Stage Company, or the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield

o MASS MoCA, The Clark Museum and Williamstown Theater Festival are further away, but still worth visiting.

If shopping is your thing, we are 3 miles from the Lee Outlets, and 3 miles from a very good supermarket. Great Barrington has good shopping just 9 miles from us. In the summer we can steer you toward the myriad Farmers Markets in the area.

Nearby hiking (we have maps and guide books you can borrow):

o Beartown State Forest

o Ice Glen and Laura’s Tower

o October Mountain State Forest

o Monument Mountain

o Sages Ravine

o Bartholemew’s Cobble

o Tyringham Cobble

o Savoy Mountain State Forest

o Bash Bish Falls

o Mount Greylock (highest in Massachusetts)

o Appalachian Trail

Paddling on the Housatonic: there is a put-in just down the road at the Housatonic River Association headquarters on Pleasant Street in South Lee.

Goose Pond

Golf and tennis are 2.5 miles away at the Greenock Country Club in Lee (Donald Ross designed the 9-hole course).

Swimming:

• Benedict Pond in Beartown State Forest

• Lee Town Beach on Laurel Lake

• Public beaches on Lake Garfield, Otis Reservoir, Onata Lake, Pontoosuc Lake

• Indoor pool at Berkshire South Recreation Complex

Other nearby attractions:

o Norman Rockwell Museum

o Naumkeag

o Berkshire Botanical Garden

o Chesterwood

o Hancock Shaker Village

o Animagic Museum of Animation

o Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health

o Herman Melville’s Arrowhead

o Ventfort Hall

If you get tired of cooking, there are many good restaurants and cafes in Lee, Lenox and Great Barrington, all within 15 minutes driving.

Pets:

Our super friendly yellow lab plays well with kids and other dogs. You are welcome to bring your house-trained, well-behaved pooch (sorry no puppies under one year of age). We ask that you not leave your dog home alone for the whole day, however. We can recommend a great doggy day care about 5 minutes away. (Our dog boards there when we go away.)

About Mary L.

I chose to relocate to the Berkshires because I am a 'nature-culture-vulture!' I grew up in Ohio but 'came East' for college and have lived all over the Boston area and in New Hampshire for the last 30+ years.

I enjoy meeting new people and sharing what this lovely area has to offer. My friendly yellow lab and I are on site and available to provide any assistance you may need.

My favorite activities are hiking, gardening, quilting, playing chamber music and listening to classical music.

Mary L. purchased this house in 2013

Why Mary L. chose Lee

The historic South Lee Schoolhouse was built in 1892 and was used as a school until the 1970s. My next-door neighbor attended school here!

The building languished until it was rescued by a local builder who specializes in fine post and beam construction. He gutted it, added the dormers, and completely re-constructed the internal posts and beams using reclaimed wood. I came along at this stage and purchased the property from him. During the summer of 2013 he built the gorgeous post and beam barn and over the winter of 2013-14 he completed the interior renovation for me.

Another Memorable Long Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six returned for another long weekend and enjoyed every minute of our stay. From night skiing at Catamount and a day at Butternut to a trip to Mass MOCA, there is so much to do. We plan to return in the future. Thanks again to Mary who thought of everything that we needed.

Beautiful property in charming town with wonderful manager

  • 5 of 5

I came to stay at the South Lee Schoolhouse to celebrate New Year's Eve and had a wonderful time there. I visited with a party of 6, though there is easily space for a few more. The house is gorgeous with tall ceilings and open spaces. It had available everything we needed, including a fully stocked (and beautiful) kitchen for cooking full meals at home. There is also wood available for a cozy fire in winter. The house has a scenic view, is easy to locate, and is only a short drive from downtown Stockbridge.

The owner, Mary, is great. She is easily available if any questions come up, and is very responsive if you should need anything. She really went above and beyond in making our stay happy and smooth.

Finally, the area is scenic and filled with great things to do. Since we visited in winter, we went snow shoeing at Hilltop Orchards, for a sleigh ride at SweetBrook Farm, and really enjoyed the hot chocolate menu at the Blantyre. We also loved the Norman Rockwell museum and the Clark Institute. Plus, walking around downtown Stockbridge finds iconic settings and fun shops. Altogether a great stay!

Superb accomodations

  • 5 of 5

The property was beautifully appointed (Mary created all the quilted bed covers, pillow covers, wall designs.) She thought of everything from puzzles and games to a well stocked kitchen, supplies at the ready and wood for the fireplace in ample supply. We could not have been happier, as were our adult children and our friends.

Wonderful holiday stay!

  • 5 of 5

Quite a beautiful property. The space is well designed for a family. The island in the kitchen attracted us all for much of the visit. Location is very convenient to shopping and other activities. Mary was very thoughtful and set up a Christmas tree for us. Highly recommended!

Stunning interior space with magnificent natural light. Every room was decorated with exquisite quilts, textile art, and photographs. Well equipped kitchen with good working space. This was a perfect home for a quiet weekend getaway. South Lee is a great stepping off point for a visit to the Berkshires

Peaceful Yet Convenient Location With Comfortable Spacious Accommodations In Beautiful Berkshires

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful home was the perfect spot for our Book Club's annual gathering. Our gracious hostess has restored and renovated this historic schoolhouse by opening it up to the views of the surrounding Berkshire foothills. The home is tastefully decorated with beautiful handmade quilts, original paintings and even a few old fashioned schoolhouse motifs cleverly placed throughout the home. The outside grounds are spacious enough for an array of lawn games and are beautifully landscaped as well. We will certainly recommend this place to family and friends.
