About Jon Harris

My wife and I settled on the Central Coast of California after a 10 year of military service. We have two adult children and four grandchildren, who we enjoy spending most of our time with. In 2001 we traveled to Oakhurst, California, for the first time and immediately fell in love with the area. The first thing that appealed to us was the friendly people and the relaxing atmosphere this area provided. We are outdoor enthusiast who enjoy camping, hiking, boating, sightseeing, and areas that are unique with culture. We enjoy traveling in the United States and abroad.

Jon Harris purchased this house in 2009

Why Jon Harris chose Yosemite Area

The first thing that appealed to us was the friendly people and the relaxing atmosphere this area provided. As we explored the area a little more, we were impressed with how much the local area had to offer. With Bass Lake and Yosemite National Park nearby, we quickly realized this one area had so much to offer for anyone. Whether it is snow skiing, water skiing, boating, hiking, sightseeing, or just the relaxation this beautiful area has to offer, your experience will be sensational.

This property is designed to help protect our most valuable resources, and the beauty that California and the Yosemite area have to offer..

Reducing, Reusing & Recycling

From recycling to installing high efficiency systems, we’re reducing our impact on the environment by reusing wherever possible. We practice extensive waste reduction and recycling of glass, paper, and cardboard, metal, plastic and ceramic. These efforts have reduced our waste significantly, the majority of which is now recycled.

Water Reduction Practices

To conserve water, one of California’s greatest natural resources, we have taken several steps to reduce its usage here at The Yosemite Haus; we have installed low-flow toilets and plumbing equipment. We also personally conserve water and encourage guests to do the same by doing such things as turning faucets off when not in immediate use and asking guests to consider using their linens more than once.

Smoke Free Environment

For the health and comfort of our guests and the health of the environment, Yosemite haus is a smoke-free environment.

Compact Florescent Bulbs and fixtures

Our change from incandescent to compact florescent bulbs in over 75% of our fixtures has reduced our energy usage significantly.

Exactly as depicted - Great home

  • 5 of 5

We arrived after dark so the explicit directions were much appreciated and thankfully the addresses are clearly signed at the driveways. The house was exactly as depicted in the pictures, clean, spacious and comfortable. On the kitchen island was a welcoming bottle of wine, some local jelly and crackers with cream cheese in the fridge - very classy. We turned on the gas fireplace which really puts out heat and provides a relaxing ambiance. Television and WiFi worked great so we didn't miss the Giants and were able to keep up on emails. Everything we needed to prepare our own meals was provided in the well-equipped kitchen, including a bag of kitchen supplies (foil, storage bags, dishwasher pods, sponge) as well as laundry detergent and a dryer sheet so we could wash our hiking clothes after our first day of hiking. The drive to the Valley floor wasn't any longer than we expected after doing our homework on Google before arriving, and the iconic waterfalls were really flowing- the reason we visited in April. The Wawona (now called Big Trees) area is very close, relatively speaking, and we hiked to Chilnualna Falls our second day. Whew what a hike, but it was so beautiful with the rushing cascades and panoramic views from the top. After our full days in the park it was great to return "home" to get cleaned up and relax. Ping pong in the game room was really fun, alas I am not the champion. The master bathroom bathtub was great for soaking our tired muscles. We found the beds comfortable so woke up refreshed. We would definitely recommend this home and would stay here again. When doing that last walkthrough to ensure we didn't forget anything, we neglected to look behind the front door which concealed a fleece jacket handing on the handy hooks. Upon contacting the property manager, she was extremely helpful and is sending the jacket back to us via mail. The owners were also very responsive via email and quickly answered all my pre-trip inquiries.

Great House in a Convenient Location for Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described and met our needs perfectly. The whole family loved it. The house is modern with nice quality finishes. The location is great for entering Yosemite's south entrance. Having Bass Lake in the area was a nice bonus we weren't expecting. We had no issues at all during our stay. Great experience!

Great Mountain Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

Property is modern with lots of nice features, including comfortable beds, two bathrooms, game room, beautiful deck with furniture and grill, and it was so nice to be able to do laundry. Close to south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Secluded neighborhood gave a very private setting. Owners/caretaker make sure you feel welcome. Oakhurst is close so getting any needed supplies is easy. Also very close to Bass Lake.

Excellent - Exactly what we were looking for

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in this home to celebrate our 15th anniversary. We were thrilled with the rental. The house is very cozy and we felt right at home. Navigation led us to the house fine, though I had downloaded offline maps of the area. I'd also made sure to grab an offline copy of the entrance instructions.

While there are neighboring houses, the house feels very secluded. Wifi worked just fine during our trip. We didn't push it too hard, but were able to place calls, browse, and stream Youtube videos on one occasion with no problem. We cooked (omelettes, then steaks on the grill for dinner) and had everything we needed and then some. This included a bottle of wine as a welcomer, Keurig machine & coffee, sugar, spices, salt, pepper, plenty of glassware and dishware, cutting boards/cookie sheets, aluminum foil, ziplock bags, dishwashing detergent, laundry detergent and I'm sure other items I'm omitting. The owners also provide heftier kitchen appliances like a blender and I may have seen a food processor in there as well - we didn't use these.

Beds were quite comfortable (we had a close friend come out on the first night, so we wound up using 2 of 3 bedrooms) and the sheets in the master bedroom were great -

both my wife and I commented about that. The bathrooms were also very nice. We didn't use the jetted tub, though it looked sizable.

The living room is very comfortable and I enjoyed the gas fireplace more than I would have thought. The sky was clear when we were there, and we really appreciated the starlit sky. I didn't realize there was a telescope until our last morning - it's in the corner of the closet near other items that families would find handy, such as a pack-n-play. I imagine it would have been cool to use on those starry nights. The game room looked awesome, but we didn't have time to use it.

The main reason we stayed here is the proximity to Yosemite. The valley was 90 minutes from the house. It was breathtaking, to say the least. Outside of the valley, I recommend Chilnualna Falls in Wawona and Nelder Grove - a close, but pothole laden gravel road. We did the latter in a rented Mustang and made it out fine, though we were driving below 5 mph and sweating it at a few points.

It was tough for me as a Miami Hurricanes alum to stay in a place flying the Ohio State banner (kind of kidding, but still want that 2002 title), but I can't deny that this was a fantastic and well appointed place to which I'd love to return.
