Beautiful Animas Valley Home. The best location for your Durango vacation

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,700 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 5 nights

About the property

3 bedroom open floor plan with beautiful views.

Hermosa is just North of the City of Durango in the Animas river valley and is the perfect location for a great vacation. Hot springs, restaurants, grocery & liquor store, are all nearby. The area has a rural neighborhood feel with houses scattered about and lots of open space, forest and farmland. We live in a house on the North side of the 6.5 acre property and are available anytime if you need anything.

The Cider House Home Away # p385579 (VRBO # 385579) is next door and both can be rented together.

This classic 1940's house was slated for demolition in 1990 to make way for a KFC in North Durango. We moved it and did a complete remodel and addition. In 2015 we decided to turn it into a vacation rental and put in new carpet, kitchen counters, and re-finished the hardwood floors. The bathrooms were redone in 2017 and have all new tile and fixtures. A stone patio was built out back for grilling and relaxing in the back yard. It is a roomy house with an open floor plan and a master bed/bath addition. It has large windows with great mountain views and a sunny enclosed porch. If you want a nice comfortable house for your vacation, this is the one. Cherries, peaches, apricots, apples, and plumbs are available to pick in season.

This house has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths and can sleep up to 8 in beds. The master has a queen bed, walk in closet, and master bathroom. The 2nd bedroom has a queen bed and the 3rd has two twin beds. On the enclosed porch there is a twin day bed and trundle bed great for hanging out on in the day and sleeping at night. There is also a pac-n-play for the little ones.

The Hermosa House is located in the Animas river valley between Durango and Durango Mountain Resort, about 10 min from Durango and 15 from Purgatory.

The Hermosa House is just 2 miles from Trimble Hot Springs with pools, massage, and great outdoor space. Drive 2 miles North and you are at James Ranch, the #1 rated restaurant in the area where you can also buy vegetables, meat, eggs, and cheese fresh off the farm. For breakfast or lunch the Hermosa Creek Cafe is just a short walk away. There is also a nice local grocery and a liquor store a few minutes away.

The house is available for 1-9 month rental September - April at $2500/month.

We are local owners that live on the property a few houses away so you can be sure if you need anything or have any problems, we can accommodate your needs. We have 3 boys ages 11-13 that love making new friends, playing soccer, hide and seek, tag and other outdoor fun on the property.

About Chris Hall

I grew up in Durango and moved back in 2000. It's a great place to live and raise our 3 boys. We love the outdoors and spend lots of time hiking, camping, mountain biking, rafting, etc. The winter brings skiing and hockey.

Why Chris Hall chose Durango

This 6.5 acre property was once a much bigger farm. Despite the growth in this area it still retains a rural feel while being just 10 minutes away from Durango. There are dozens of mature fruit trees on the property including apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, and cherry and lots of space for the kids to run around. We just love living here.

What makes this house unique

It has great views of the mountains and a pear tree, wild roses and raspberry patch in the yard surrounding the house. The rest of the property is orchards among the houses.

Perfect for our needs!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this property based on the location as we were attending a wedding in the neighborhood. Walkability to the event was most important so it was perfect! Accommodations were just as pictured and great for the six of us. Hosts were very nice and available if we needed anything but left us to enjoy our vacation. They do live on the property but rarely ever saw them.

Perfect house and location for Durango vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this house and the beautiful surrounding grounds. The house was perfect for our family of 5, with plenty of space to settle in for the week. The house is located just a bit out from Durango, so it was an easy drive into town yet still felt "out of town". The house has everything we needed, and the linens were fresh and clean. We cooked in several nights and the kitchen was stocked with the essentials. Chris was a wonderful host, and always answered our questions in a timely manner. Wish we could have stayed longer! We would rent this house again in a heartbeat!

We rate the accommodations good.

We are two adult couples who stayed in the Hermossa House. We enjoyed our stay and found everything very satisfactory. We would stay there again if we traveled to Durango.

Disappointed in what the property really was!

  • 1 of 5

The property was not what was described on the VRBO website, showers in both bathrooms did not work when we first got there, the owner had to come the next day and get them to work. It would have been nice to know this, we had traveled a long way and a hot shower would have been nice., property was overgrown and cluttered. Next time I will do a better job of researching before I rent a house.

Owner's Response: We really try hard to provide a great vacation rental home, so it’s disappointing to receive a review like this. We’re so sorry that you felt the house didn't meet your expectations. If you would let us know what you feel was not as described we would like to take a look at it. We try to have the pictures and descriptions as accurate as possible. We’ve been renting this house for several years and all the other reviews and feedback have been positive. The showers do work fine, however, you have to pull harder on the handle than most faucets to turn them on. This is explained in the house information book. I did come over and show you how they worked. I know this handle can be harder for older folks and it’s not the best faucet design. We will be replacing them this fall. We mow the yard around the house every week and the areas not mowed are the wild rose bushes and the raspberry patch on the North side of the house. This is shown and described in the pictures. The property is 6 acres and we let some areas away from the houses grow wild plants like sweet peas and milk thistle as it is beneficial to bees, butterflies, etc. and as we have lots of fruit trees we like having these beneficial insects around for the fruit trees.

Very clean with everything we needed.

  • 5 of 5

Owner was friendly and helpful even though I called him when he was on vacation. Plenty of room, comfortable furniture, and some friendly cats! I so wanted to let them in but my husband and son are allergic. Just know you have to pull HARD on the nozzles to start both showers! Very lovely house and very easy to get on the highway to go to Durango or purgatory.

Our Colorado Vacation Fall of 2016

  • 5 of 5

Hermosa House was very comfortable and clean. We had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable. The two bathrooms were both a nice size and clean. The kitchen was well appointed with top notch appliances. The views of the surrounding mountains were gorgeous!!! And the apple trees were just loaded with ripe apples which we enjoyed snacking on. We made a delicious fresh apple pie as well. The location was perfect as our home base for our Colorado vacation! It was close to Durango and close enough for longer drives to Monument Valley and the Four Corners Monument. We would definitely recommend Hermosa House to friends and family.

Trimble Hot Springs is just 2 min away. The world famous Hermosa Creek Trail is just up the road and is the best single track mountain bike ride anywhere. Great for hiking too. The Colorado trail starts in Durango as well or can be accessed from Little Molas lake, about 20 min drive north into the high country.
