Why Angelique Bennett chose Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island

We began coming to Bar Harbor when our first child was born. We fell in love with the town and Acadia National Park. We now have four children and are thrilled to own this beautiful home so they can grow up visiting Bar Harbor

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the wonderful week we had together in Bar Harbor. Spending time with my mom, sister, aunts and cousins far exceeded my expectations. La Maisonette is the perfect home for sharing stories of the past and making so many more fun memories. The 10 of us were so comfortable in your home - it is the perfect layout and the fully stocked kitchen was great.

Great vacation house

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent the last week in June at La Maisonette and our trip and weather were fantastic. The house is situated in a perfect location on West St. just a block from the Bar Island sandbar which you can cross at low tide. It's an easy walk into town to restaurants, shopping and the tour boats. The grocery store was also a few blocks away. We had my 87 year old mother with us and she loved spending time on the screened in porch reading and relaxing.

The house is very old, with loads of character and plenty of room for all of us plus some. We made a few meals at home and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. The bedrooms were well appointed and the bathrooms had plenty of towels. There were also two washers and dryers upstairs which also came in handy. The downstairs rooms were very spacious with a big dining room table for meals. We especially liked the foosball table for added entertainment and, as I've said, the screened in porch was a plus where we had our lunch and people-watched.

The best part was also being so close to Acadia. We spent every day exploring and hiking in this beautiful National Park.

All in all La Maisonette was a great choice for our family vacation and I would definitely recommend it. The owner was also very responsive with any questions I had during the rental process.

Communication and money handling issues

  • 2 of 5

The Good – Location, location, location. It’s right on the fringe of downtown Bar Harbor, sparing you the effort of having to park there. The house is well equipped. The beds are quite comfortable.

The Bad – The stone pillars bracketing the driveway are close together, making it a challenge for a wider vehicle. There are some minor broken items (lock, window, etc.). These aren’t of concern except for wondering if the owner knows or will repair be deducted from your deposit?

The Ugly – Communication/contract compliance, or lack thereof. Beforehand, questions and requests were ignored (example: it took multiple efforts and three weeks to get my copy of the signed contract) or subject to lengthy delay. You pay all the rental and a substantial deposit up front. The contract states your deposit will be returned within 45 days of the rental. I don’t see any reason for holding my money that long (I rent about a half dozen places a year with less days), but signed the contract. But, I didn’t even get it back by then and it took multiple efforts to get my deposit money eventually returned, in spite of indications that it would be taken care of. To provide perspective, the rental occurred the week after Labor Day and my money wasn’t returned until December.

Owner's Response: I do not feel a 2 is a warranted rating for our home which she really had no negative comments about. To address her comments: the stone pillars are part of the original 100+ year old home and add to the charm of the property. We drive a van and suburban and while it requires careful attention, we have never had issues getting into the driveway. There is street parking in front of the house if a renter is uncomfortable pulling in. The minor items are fixed as soon as we hear about them or are done in the off-season if they are too disruptive to renters and don't pose a safety issue. Our contract, including deposit refund, is industry standard provided by the primary rental agency in Maine. I do my best to get contracts out timely and deposits refunded timely but in a couple of cases this year, I did experience a delay because of events going on in my life and for that I sincerely apologize. I am trying a new system to prevent this from happening in the future. Angelique Bennett

Amazing, amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This home was absolutely perfect for our recent stay. My older boys were thrilled to sleep in the attic on the futon; my younger two sons very happy in one of the bedrooms with twin beds. We had a delightful formal meal of lobster in the dining room (and with a second table set up there, all 17 of us sat down for dinner), and having a double kitchen proved incredibly helpful: the two refrigerators were put to good use, the counter in the smaller kitchen was perfect to store the caterer's dishes.

We could not have asked for a better location! To be one minute from the sandbar, five minutes walk from the health food store, FedEx, the bicycle rental shop ... it was amazing. We would turn out of the driveway and bike up to Acadia, and once we passed a man who said, "Living the dream," and I thought, "Yes, that is exactly right."

The foosball table was used regularly. The table by the back door proved ideal for the cousins to make little Sculpey clay creations that made them VERY proud. We did 1000 piece puzzles around the table, shared the projects we have worked on this year in the family room, and had space enough not to be with people if we needed that time, too.

La Maisonette, Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

The house was very comfortable with plenty of room for the 12 of us. The dining room was large and had seating for 12. All the appliances were new and worked well. The house was very clean and well-maintained.

The location was great with the supermarket 1 block away and all the activities of Bar Harbor 2 blocks away. The "walk" to Bar Island when the tide was out was less than a block away.

At Bar Harbor, was a wonderful shoreline walk, lots of tours to choose from and free buses heading for Acadia National Park.

The hiking and biking to various places in the Park presented awesome vistas of the ocean and the islands in the area.

Vacation at La Maisonette June 27-July 4 2015

  • 3 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our stay in La Maisonette and Bar Harbor. I will summarize the review by noting the Pros and Cons of La Maisonette:

Pros: excellent location with easy access to downtown { 4-5 minute walk} and the activities, shops and restaurants.

The house is big and easily accomodated 6 adults and 5 kids with plenty of room.

Enough parking for 3-5 vehicles.

Big dining table and also a breakfast kitchen table with good working appliances and refrigerators {2} washer and dryer.

Cons

The house shows its age from the outside not bad but certainly is seen

The rooms are OK but the bathrooms can use some improvements, i.e. towel hangers bigger bathrooms, etc.

The kitchen is big and functional but perhaps some teflon coated frying pots and pans for easier cleaning after cooking

The two stone posts at the entrance to the driveway requires careful maneuvering if a van is used, OK for cars

Owner's Response: Our home is over 120 years old on the historic registry. In the last 3 years, the roof was replaced and the entire outside of the house repainted. We restored the upstairs replacing plaster with drywall and completely renovated the kitchen. We are limited as to what modifications we can make because the homes is on the historic registry and have attempted to maintain the home's historic feel both with the restorations and the furnishings. We believe that is what gives La Maisonette its charm and has resulted in so many 5 star reviews and positive comments from other visitors.
