Get away from it all at Hidden River Cabin, a family retreat tucked away on 2.5 acres of quiet forest at the end of a private road, along the banks of the Betsie River, and surrounded by the Betsie River State Game Refuge. The Betsie is a protected Natural River, which limits development and preserves the natural beauty, and you will have 330 feet of natural frontage and private dock all to yourself. The river is shallow and gentle with a sandy bottom, great for big kids to play in (averages 2-4 feet deep), and deep enough for leisurely kayak trips in the two tandem kayaks provided (each seats 2 adults + 1 child). An assortment of life vests are available for toddler through adult.
The river will take you to the east end of the Betsie Bay, Frankfort and Elberta (2 hour float or 1 hour paddle), or all the way to Lake Michigan for the more ambitious paddlers. For the fishermen in the family, fall heralds the arrival of the king salmon run (starting as early as mid-August) with winter and spring bringing in the steelhead trout. Use the portable fish cleaning table and the grill/smoker to cook your catch for dinner, or take them to the Port City Smokehouse for the best smoked fish or pate you've ever had! Watch their Facebook page for tournaments and fishing news.
Hidden River Cabin is just a few minutes from the beautiful pristine beaches at Frankfort and Crystal Lake, and just 30 minutes from Sleeping Bear Dunes. There is a family-sized folding shade tent, lots of sand toys, and plenty of folding chairs that you can take along with you on your beach outings.
Use the bikes to explore the adjacent 22 mile Betsie Valley Trail, which connects Frankfort, Beulah and Thompsonville, passing by some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. The cabin has a variety of adult and kid sized rides - just bring your helmets! Enjoy the volleyball and badminton set, bocce set, stomp rockets, s'mores around the firepit, and numerous other activities. Explore the forest, play in the river, or just curl up with a good book in the family size hammock.
The bedrooms are themed, and tastefully furnished with family antiques. The Forest Room, upstairs, has a mahogany four-poster queen sized bed. The River Room, also upstairs, has two sets of knotty pine bunk beds. The Beach Room on the main floor has a full sized mahogany sleigh bed and dresser. Additional sleeping can be found in the Living Room, a queen size futon with spring mattress.
Your family will never run out of things to do at Hidden River Cabin! Inside, you will find plenty of kid-friendly games and toys, as well as a selection of DVDs and VHS tapes.
We loved this hidden gem. it was exactly as described. we kayaked, bicycled, swam, fished, shopped and enjoyed ourselves all week. we had 6 adults and 3 kids, the cabin was just the right size. The Betsie river is a special river in it self. thanks again.
