The owner, Peter Gill, is the grandson of Leo Power, one of the longest serving light keepers at the Fort Amherst lighthouse. Peter operates Fort Amherst Vacation Homes along with his wife Nicole.
All the benefits of a sea side property in outport Newfoundland with the convenience of being located in the city. See the downtown lights from the front deck. A 5-minute drive to downtown. Entrance to the East Coast Trail just feet away.
My first reaction was that we were a little isolated from St. John's but after one day I completely changed my mind. St. John's is only a short drive away and the views from the house were spectacular. I don't think there is a place in St. Johns that could offer whale and bird watching on a daily basis. We saw more whales from the deck than we did on the tour boat. The house was extremely comfortable with all the conveniences of home. After touring around during the day I was quite happy to come back to Fort Amherst and watch the boats come in and out of the harbour while we prepared dinner. The house is a short drive away from many popular tourist spots, i.e.: Cape Spear and Signal Hill. I would also highly recommend the Zip Line Adventure in Petty Harbour for the more adventurous types. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer.
What an amazing property! A spotless house with an amazing position at the entrance to St. John's Harbour. Just a few minutes from all the great restaurants in St. John's... if you can tear yourself away!
This was one of the main highlights of our two weeks in Newfoundland. Peter and Nicole made our stay so enjoyable. The cottage has everything you might possibly need. The ocean views and the ships entering the Harbour right before our eyes was mesmerizing. The historical value of both the lighthouse and the Fort is worth the stay alone. The city is within a 5 minute drive so we enjoyed St. Johns attractions as well. We will return!
My family came from all around the world to reunite at this unique and wonderful vacation home.It was more than we had dreamed off. On the edge of the ocean but 10 minutes from the city of St. John's. Sitting on the deck and watching the parade of ships and boats pass through the Narrows and watching the sun and the moon rise up out of the ocean will never be forgotten. The house is perfectly equipped, everything you can think of; the hosts are always available. A glorious place to spend time with loved ones. Full of history, unique setting, generously furnished.....what a place !!!
The house is excellent, very clean and very well equipped. Great location, very comfortable for a family or 2 couples. The owners were very attentive also. If you want great views of the ocean, ships and a fully functioning house, this is it.
This cottage is a near perfect location for a holiday. The views are incredible and there is a sense of being 'away from it all', while only being 15 minutes from St. John's. The accommodation is very comfortable and there are few things better than an afternoon spent reading and watching the ships in the Narrows. This really is a unique place to spend some time. The owners are especially helpful and responsive.
