Casa Esmeralda is a lovely well-maintained three bedroom, three bathroom Mediterranean style villa, located above Lake Arenal in the Guanacaste highlands of Costa Rica. The view is one of the most spectacular in Costa Rica that features ever changing colors as clouds pass high above the lake and surrounding mountains. The home was recently renovated and refurnished to be put back on the rental market after several years of exclusively private use. It features a spacious, covered terrace for morning coffee, afternoon cocktails and conversation anytime. There are four comfortable 'Tico' rockers on the porch for your relaxation. The home has satellite TV, DVD player, telephone and WiFi, in case you feel the need to stay in touch. The home is fully air conditioned, but this is rarely needed with our mild temperatures and gentle mountain breezes. The kitchen is well equipped with new appliances. The dining room seats eight and features dramatic lake and mountain views. The laundry room is conveniently located off the kitchen and is equipped with a washer and dryer. Each of the two main bedrooms comfortably sleeps two adults. The third bedroom is equipped with a futon for children or additional adults.
The house is owned by a North American family. The extended family members vacation at the house whenever their schedules permit.
Ed Woods purchased this house in 2001
The owners were vacationing in Costa Rica. Overwhelmed by the view from the house and the surrounding area, they purchased the house without concrete plans. It has been one of their best decisions.
The house is conveniently located right off the main road and only a few minutes from Nuevo Arenal. The area is a vacationer's paradise that offers a variety of activities unique to Costa Rica. The house is entirely air conditioned for any 'outdoor challenged' visitors.
An excellent place to stay. A little off the beaten path so it's nice and quiet. Incredible views, clean house. We hope to stay again.
Our stay last week was amazing! The home has stunning views and the solitude was enjoyed! The porch and rockers were addictive! We spotted toucans and enjoyed hearing the howler monkeys every morning.
We drove to La Fortuna almost every day for activities, which was about 50 minutes each way. The area has so much diversity!
If you or family members get car sick, BRING MOTION SICKNESS PILLS! (Or you can get them at the local pharmacy as we did) The roads are as windy as the scenery is beautiful!! :)
Our only difficulty was the wifi which didn't work even 1 moment the 3 days we were there. My husband needed to send out some work documents a couple of times and we had to drive into town and send them from a restaurant there. Other than that, we can fully recommend this home!!
The driving directions given were so helpful and we found the home with no difficulty.
Thanks for a lovely place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful Arenal area. While there we did the Mistico Hanging Bridges tour. We had already been hiking a lot by our selves and I'm glad we took the time to do it with a guide. He was able to point out so much more to us and it changed how we viewed things for the rest of our trip. We also did canyoneering, a river rafting trip on the Balsa river and the Arenal Volcano hike with finishing at the local's free area of the hot springs near Tabacon. We were thrilled with everything we did. Costa Rica has done an amazing job with tourism!
My family came to visit me in Costa Rica, so we decided to stay in this beautiful home for part of our trip and wow, we are so glad we did! The house is beautiful with a breathtaking view of the lake! There is so much flor and fauna around the house that only makes the view that much sweeter. The climate was cool but humid, so the house can get a bit musty, but my entire family who is usually hyper-sensitive to this had no issues! Ed was absolutely wonderful and even came over to pick some mangoes off of the mango tree outside for us to eat! An overall fantastic stay that we will not soon forget.
We had a wonderful time at Casa Esmarelda!! The view of Lake Arenal was one of the best we've ever had in all of Costa Rica. The house was very nice- clean, comfortable, well equipped. Our host Ed was great-good suggestions for excursions and local places to eat. Our favorites- the Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfalls, Ecoglide zipline, our hike of Cerrochata( difficult but well worth it), and finally, soaking after our hikes in the hot river outside of Tabicon with the locals. The food at Tinajas Arenal and Los Platillos Voladores was wonderful. Hope to make it back soon! Bret, Michigan
Our stay at Casa Esmeralda was perfect. The astonishing view of Lake Arenal, the howler and capuchin monkeys, the toucans, the crested guans, the chachalacas, the montezuma birds (with their very bizarre electronic sounding call), the parrots and parakeets, the occasional soothing light rainy mist and all the beautiful flowers and lush vegetation. Not to mention the always friendly people of Nuevo Arenal. What’s not to like?
The house, too, was perfect; especially the panoramic view from the dining room. It’s nicely laid out, very clean and well furnished. We particularly enjoyed the extremely comfortable rocking chairs on the porch…where we sat for hours simply taking it all in. The house is also easy to find, thanks to Ed’s very detailed directions.
Yes, the Wi-Fi is a little bit slow and, yes, there are teeny tiny ants often wandering around the kitchen. But we’ve never rented a property in Costa Rica that didn’t have ants or slow Wi-Fi. In fact, we’ve come to expect it as part of the charm.
No question about it…we’ll be renting this property again very soon.
Thanks for your hospitality, Ed!
My stay at the house was great. The view of the lake is amazing. If you have kids, they will have a blast with the sounds of howler monkeys and beautiful birds. The house is ample in size and well laid out. The furniture is comfortable, along with the beds. The only thing stopping short of a full five star rating are some inconveniences. Nothing that makes the stay unfit. Ed was very helpful with an issue we had with the tv and it was sorted out. The ants in the kitchen are just a pain. There is some spray they provide but it doesn't stop them, just be careful with any food left out. The wireless internet is not very good at all. Couldn't connect very often and once a couple people were on it was extremely slow. Finding the place was a bit of a side show. It isn't very well marked from the road but I was driving at night when I got there and this made it much more difficult. These things will not ruin your trip or dampen your stay.
The small town of Nuevo Arenal is great. You can get almost anything you need from the stores and there are some local bars that have some nitelife. I will say that if you want a secluded place to relax, then this is perfect. You won't bothered by any traffic or neighbors. The lake is close by, so if you want a quiet vacation, this is highly recommended. If you want hustle and bustle, the best place to visit is La Fortuna, which is about an hour away. Much more of a tourist town. I don't recommend driving at night, this goes for anywhere around the Arenal Lake. It can be tricky during the day with the curves and bends but at night it is a little precarious.
I would stay here again on my next trip, if I go back to the same area, because of the tranquility.
Lake Arenal is a world famous wind and kite surfing destination. Tico Winds is a 20 minute drive. Zip-lining, hot springs, and waterfall rapelling are all within an hour driving distance. Monteverde Cloud Forest is a two hour drive.
