Overview

About the property

3 bed, 2 bath, sleeps 6

Hello!

Diamond Hill House offers the potential for an experience that will refresh your sense of well-being. We know this can be true because many who have visited have told us that they have been immeasurably enriched by being in this place. It is a home and an island haven that has proven to welcome all who spend time.

Privacy

The 5-acre property is gently crisscrossed with paths through the Salal, native Douglas and Grand Fir, Cedar, and Ocean Spray. The view leads to sunrise vistas toward Obstruction Island, across Eastsound inlet. Several picnic settings are situated within the acreage. BBQ? Ready in minutes, the propane grill is on the deck facing the pond, perfectly suited to prepare seared steaks, fish or to pop open fresh oysters purchased at the Farmers’ Market in Eastsound. Croquet played on what we affectionately call our “lawn spot” can be set up at a moment’s notice. You’ll see, in the photo gallery, that we’ve contrived a bit of a golfing challenge in the midst of it all with a single green in the center of the lawn spot with chip shots that challenge even the most experienced. This activity is known for its success in making serious golfers laugh heartily and non-golfers believe in themselves.

Ease of Access

And yet there is ready access to the ferry landing (7 minutes away) for coming and going or for an inter-island day trip; Orcas Village for Friday night tunes and dinner; culinary options in Eastsound, Deer Harbor and West Sound; Farmers' Market at the Village Green, and ease of access to a fine selection of locally owned and operated restaurants.

Activities

Moran State Park and Turtleback Mountain entice hikers and offer magnificent views. Orcas Athletics offers a complete weight training and pool facility in Eastsound; Rosario Resort and Spa is upscale; the Golf Course (a real 9-hole one, not our creation) is reasonably priced and open to the public. Morning slow walks are always a possibility; bicycles and kayaks can be rented. The swimming beach at Cascade Lake is very family friendly with picnic areas, dinghy or paddleboat rentals, and playground structures. Just down the road is Lake Killibrew - filled with very smart bass. :)

Sailing and whale watching

We can give you recommendations for whale watching, sail and salt-water fishing charters offered by island operators.

House and Grounds

Diamond Hill House is two-stories with living room, kitchen, free standing wood stove, master bedroom, and bath on the first floor; two bedrooms, full bath and loft library/game area on the second floor. A wrap around deck on the east and southeast face the summer sunrise and afternoon warmth. Nestled in the center of the wooded five-acres, the house, shop, orchard, and gardens share a clearing that includes a wetland, pond, and numerous walking paths. Picnic and quiet sitting benches will quickly be discovered on your walk-abouts.

We are happy to answer any question you might have about the island and Diamond Hill House. Just let us know! Our shop-loft dwelling is not too far away, giving us the opportunity to assure you optimum comfort and courtesies during your stay. At this time we are offering our home to guests year-round. Each season offers a different experience of island times. Our gardens and grounds and the pond change quite dramatically given the temperate climate. We love the seasonal transitions, too - hope you'll come visit!

About Victoria and Bruce Parker

Recently retired, I enjoy being busy during the summer with gardening and keeping Diamond Hill House beautiful and ready for guests. Bruce manages the property and is the sailer in the family. Our two adult sons live in the Seattle area so we get to see them quite a bit!

Victoria and Bruce Parker purchased this house in 1992

Why Victoria and Bruce Parker chose Orcas

Privacy with a view, nested in mature Douglas Fir and Cedar forest with Salal undergrowth. Lots of light and windows in our home keep you connected to your surroundings. Feeling of openness.

What makes this house unique

Diamond Hill House is located in an area of Orcas Island of 5-acre+ ownerships. While providing quiet privacy we are within easy reach of the ferry landing, Eastsound, and a great bass fishing lake: Lake Killibrew. Moran State Park is a 25 minute drive and Turtleback Mountain hikes about 15 minutes. Lawn areas in front of the house allow for a game of croquet; a single green golf course challenges all comers with woods and pond shots; sunrise/set bench for coffee or champagne; walking paths within the grounds; and the stars appear within arms length. Travel to other islands, Victoria, Canada, and the mainland are simple to plan.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A gem!

  • 5 of 5

The photographs do not adequately capture the beauty and serenity of Diamond Hill House. Huge spruce, fir and cedar tower over the comfy 3 bedroom cottage full of beautiful antiques. We enjoyed sipping our morning coffee on the large sunny porch. Piano playing guests will especially enjoy the vintage full upright piano and eclectic collection of sheet music. The cottage is surrounded by manicured grounds and gardens. Guests have free rein to explore the entire five acre property and linger on conveniently placed benches along the trails. Having lived on Orcas for over thirty years, your onsite ( but unobtrusive) hosts are very knowledgeable as to what you might wish to do and see during your visit. We especially enjoyed hiking in Moran State Park. Our only regret was that our stay was too short. We highly recommend Diamond Hill House as a great place to unwind.

Beautiful peaceful and relaxing home!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful home for 2 nights and loved it! It is such a peaceful and relaxing place to get away from the stresses of life. Loved the view of the water and all of the paths for the kids to explore. The house had everything we could possibly need. Victoria even brought over some fresh garlic, parsley, flowers and green onions! The short drive to/from the ferry was great and it’s also an easy drive to the Eastsound area from the house. One of our favorite touches at the house was the electric warming blankets on each bed. It was cool at night and felt great climbing into a warm bed. I actually came home and ordered the same blanket for my own bed! The only thing I might recommend is to bring a travel alarm clock with you if you’ll need to be up early. I try not to have my phone by the bed when I sleep and missed seeing what time it was without looking at my phone or setting my alarm. Will definitely stay here again the next time we make a trip to Orcas Island!

Owner's Response: Me, too! A warm bed is a cozy beginning to a good night's sleep. Thank you for such a descriptive review - and suggestion of travel alarm clock. We will be sure to provide for future guests. Very happy to know that your young teens found the woods paths intriguing. Having lots of space and no other houses in sight is often a novel experience and a very good reason to come to a rural island like Orcas. We hope you'll return. V&B

Diamond Exceeds Expectations

  • 5 of 5

I never dreamed the home would be such a treasure chest of interesting and unique antiques. The beds were very comfortable with above average linens. Although we didn’t do much cooking, the kitchen seemed to have more than enough supplies. There were lots of games, dvd’s and even a piano. The large property has privacy and beautiful gardens. The owner, Victoria, was very hospitable and had helpful suggestions before we arrived. Diamond Hill was a perfect place for our girls weekend and would be a great place for a family to stay. The only downside (which I loved) was the poor internet connection. I don’t think one could go wrong with Diamond Hill.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Marcy! The piano's been in the family since I was about 8 - happy to know that you enjoyed it all. Re: internet...yes, tends to be slow in this very rural place, it's true. Also depends on the carrier you have, I've found. Glad it was a good trade-off for the privacy and quiet! Safe travels, V

Nice, great location

  • 4 of 5

We were happy with the location, fairly close ( 5-10 min) to the ferry landing and hotel. Beds and house are nice. Nice owners that are in nearby house. No laundry facilities on site. All in all, I would give it an 8. Everything that you would expect was present and they were good to work with.

Owner's Response: We're so glad your family was able to enjoy Orcas and gather for several evenings and breakfasts at Diamond Hill House. You're correct - we do have to make sure that guest showers and kitchen water availability are both comfortable and adequate so have noted on our listing that there is no washer/dryer available for use. Typical for the San Juan Islands! So far in our 5 years that has worked out well for everyone...and leaves a little water for the gardens. We hope you'll find reason to return to visit Orcas and Diamond Hill House. Best wishes, V & B

Beautiful peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

This last weekend, we stayed in this lovely house and were able to enjoy so many of its pleasures. Victoria and Bruce were lovely hosts who made the stay a joy. The house itself is very nice, and kept everyone happy. It was the land around the house, though, that really made it an extra-special joy. There are little trails around, and a beautiful "lookout" over the water. In addition, there are hidden places to sit and just enjoy the quiet of Orcas.

We can't wait to come back.

Owner's Response: You've touched on what we had hoped guests would find here - quiet and space to just be present. We hope you'll come back, too. Thanks for giving the new bbq a go - being on the deck near the stairs to the pond table seems to be a good spot. Maybe see you again - V&B

Very enjoyable experience

  • 5 of 5

We found Diamond Hill House to be perfect for the four of us in our party. The home was well equipped, immaculate, and very close to the ferry terminal and town. Victoria and Bruce were very accommodating and easy to work with. We will most likely be back when in the area again.
