About Ann Morgan James

My 17 year old son Jack and I are so very excited to have this property. It was a family get away and when my husband decided to leave the family we were worried we could not keep the house...but we did and we could not be more thrilled!

We are both published authors. My title is How to Raise a Millionaire and Jack's is How to Let your Parents Raise a Millionaire. When you stay at the house, you can check out the house copy of the books! :-)

We are excited about our books. How to Raise a Millionaire is the ultimate parent’s guide to increasing confidence and growing bully-proof self esteem in any kid.

My book provides simple everyday tips and a unique action plan to teach my six millionaire skills you need to teach your kids so they can imagine and live the life of their dreams!!

Jack's book is the kid's companion piece to my book and is written from one kid to another. His book helps kids see the benefits of starting their own business!

We are a mother and son team on a mission. We want to fill the world with kid entrepreneurs.

If you have a kid and you want to tap into every ounce of potential your kid, help them start a business. Read our books, we'll show you how! It so simple it criminal!

Ann Morgan James purchased this house in 1999

Why Ann Morgan James chose California

We originally bought this home just before our son was born. We actually did the final walk through about 3 weeks before he was born! The first moment we saw it, we knew we had to have it.

It was a place to get away and fish, but we quickly fell in love with the area. The people, the weather, the surroundings, the activities, it is just the whole package! When we came to a fork in the road a year and a half ago (husband asked for a divorce), it was Jack who insisted I not sell the house. This brought me to the decision to rent it out as a vacation home so others could enjoy it just like us!

Renting our home to others allows us to keep our home and that is important! So Thank You from the bottom of my heart and the bottom of Jack's. You are helping us keep our special home.

What makes this house unique

Cassel is a small lazy mountain town. It offers the ease of country living with some of the best outdoor activities around. But more than the fishing, hiking and mountain air it offers peace.

Our home sits in the shadow of Burney Mountain -- whether you are in the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, the master bedroom or relaxing on the back porch, you are surrounded by the magnificent view of one of nature’s creations. The peace and calm this home offers to its guests invites you to relax and revive.

Bring your tool belt and mosquito spray

  • 2 of 5

We recently finished a five night stay at this property, and have rented numerous VRBO listings. First let me acknowledge that the owner was very responsive when we needed assistance navigating the Wi-Fi. I'll start with the pros for this property: location, ample supplies like toilet paper, shampoo, BBQ and towels etc....

However, this property is in desperate need of some TLC. Within 15 minutes of arrival we realized the back slider was not working....my husband spent some time with WD 40 and re-working the latch to make it functional and to make the lock work. There were ants in the kitchen, and we resolved the issue with spray that was located in the garage. It was quite hot during our stay and we used the air conditioning to cool down....however it was inadequate to cover the upstairs comfortably. My husband went out to inspect the unit and found it completely covered in leaves which he washed off. No outdoor lights in the rear seem functional, the very lovely pool has not been properly maintained or cleaned....it was unusable. There were two swarms of yellow jackets adjacent to the house (in the gutters) which my husband sprayed (with spray that was in the garage). The lights in the garage did not work properly. In the master closet there was a large pile of linens and quilts which had a VERY strong odor of mildew, the screen door on the slider in the master is torn and has a two foot flap/opening at the bottom (which was an issue because the mosquitos were everywhere). The bedside light in the downstairs room did not work? or needed new bulbs.

I would imagine this was a lovely home at some point in the distant past, but it is in desperate need of some maintenance ASAP. We did not reach out for immediate repairs on this house because it became apparent that it had been some time since anyone has invested time in maintaining this home. The photos of the outside of this home must have been take some time ago and do not accurately portray the current state of this property.

Pet friendly vacation rental with conveniences of home.

  • 4 of 5

Our family from Kentucky were in town for our son's wedding in Cassel in late June. I found this property on VRBO.com. Less than two miles from the wedding venue. House was big enough to house them and we were able to have our RV there as well. The house was cool and clean. It had internet and tv, and a large selection of movies available to watch. Home is well furnished and comfortable. The kids and adults loved the pool. Which was nice way of cooling off in the summer heat. Being a pet friendly, we were able to bring our fur kids with us. This home is a short drive to Burney falls, a must see if you are in the area. Only complaint was the mosquitos, which is no fault of the owner. We had a great time making memories :). Thank you Ann!

Very nice experience

  • 4 of 5

Property was very nice. A couple of things could be improved:

1)The dining room sliding door to the outside is very hard to open

2) It would be nice to have a lamp on the upper bedroom nightstand

3)I was bitten 3 times by mosquitos in the dining room. I killed at least a dozen mosquitoes on the dining room ceiling

Great stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the house in Cassel. Ann was very helpful in allowing us a last minute reschedule when our family fell ill. We stayed for 3 nights, which gave us 2 full days at Burney State Park.

Our 3 year old really wanted to fish for the first time on this trip. While we didn't catch anything, it was great that fishing was within walking distance of the house. There were quite a few folks out fishing and all were very helpful in sharing what was working for them.

It was a great trip and the house was a great size for our little family of 4. Thanks Ann for the hospitality!

Dan

Short Weekend Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five adults enjoyed the private, fully stocked house. The pool was great even though it was cold. Once you moved around a bit, it was fine. The guys weren't able to fish out the back gate because of all the tall weeds and brush but were within walking distance of a more open area. Our dog enjoyed the large fenced backyard. The only downside were the numerous mosquitoes. We brought bug repellent but all of us managed to get bitten, especially one of my sons. Hopefully we'll be able to return again when the mosquitoes aren't so prevalent.

Owner's Response: Tina, So glad you all had fun!!!! Fishing out the back is best for flyfisherman/woman who can wade out from our side of the creek. It is a great for those folks, but you are right, there is a lot of foliage back there. :-) Yep...skeeters are not fun -- we know your pain -- this is the bummer of bring right on the river. I try to worn people and this year was particularly bad with all the rain. You are so right about the pool. It is brisk in the spring, but a great cool dip on the 100+ days of the summer. We hope you return too!!! :-)

I really want to give this property 5 stars...

  • 5 of 5

Pros: Owner is very nice. The home is cozy and in a rustic neighborhood. Scenery is beautiful and neighborhood is quiet. (Only exceptions were there were several door-to-door solicitors that came by each day. That's out of anyone's control.) Yard seems fenced and is large. Beautiful, hand-crafted quilts and afghans on all beds. Well-behaved dogs are allowed. Couch covers are provided so your dog can join you on the huge, sofa. You can park your car right near the front door for easy loading and unloading. View of mountains from upstairs. Nice master bathroom upstairs and small one downstairs. Tile and hardwood floors downstairs and carpet in bedroom downstairs and upstairs. Kitchen stocked with plates, glasses, & cookware. Groceries are available with a 20-minute drive. Owner is a published author and has copies of her book in the entryway.

Cons: Major item was that prior (multiple?) visitors' garbage was rotting in the garage and it smelled so bad it made your eyes water in the kitchen... and then permeated the rest of the house. The odor crept in, even with both the garage and laundry room doors closed. During the day, we kept the windows open so it was yucky but bearable. However, when we left for the day or during the night, we had to close/lock the windows... and it was bad. The prior residents were supposed to take out the trash but, obviously, they weren't aware or didn't do it anyway. The owner apologized about the smell.

Minor stuff: Check with the owner beforehand about availability if you or your kids really want a pool experience. When we visited, the pool was a froggie pond. Although our kids were disappointed, I totally understand that it must be hard to keep up an outdoor pool. I would hate to drain it because clearly its own eco-system as it is now. BBQ on backyard deck was too gross to use with brown mystery goop on the tanks. Again, it's country so maybe it was birds because I could hear lots of geese by the river. Or, prior tenants could have cleaned up after themselves better. We cooked inside and that was fine. Hand soaps were non-existent or empty but, fortunately, we travel with bar soap as backup. Coffee maker was gross so we cleaned it. Same for the stove top. Place mats were not washed so we just flipped them over and hoped for the best. Cleaning person must have had an off day.

Overall it was a nice stay and we would return if the garbage situation is addressed.
