This eco- friendly all season* compound sits on the scenic shore of Moosehead Lake in Maine overlooking Mt. Kineo. Whether you are looking to relax amongst the tall pines or looking for a bit more adventure such as fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, ATV, hiking, biking, watching moose or boating and ice fishing - Moosehead has it all!
Our compound consists of four cabins which were originally built for use as a boys camp in the early 1900's. They have been tastefully updated maintaining the charm of yesterday but included todays modern amenities such as internet. The landscaping and furnishings are magazine worthy. The cabins are far from rustic.
The property is 'off the grid' so it is important to note that the use of the solar and septic should be limited with large groups. This is the perfect setting for a family reunion, yoga retreat, small weddings or just a get together with friends.
The cabins are not rented separately so if you were to rent the entire compound would be included in your reservation. There is a main camp with a master bedroom and den that has a full futon, full kitchen and dining room. A second camp with two twin beds a futon and a small kitchen and bath and two other sleeping cabins. One with bunk beds and the other with a queen bed. In the winter months the main camp is not winterized so only the smaller 3 camps are for rent.
Many people ask me about hiking. There are so many mountains in the Moosehead Lake region, it is difficult to highlight them all. Among the most popular hikes of the Rockwood area are Mount Kineo A trip to Mt. Kineo is a must. When reaching the top a hiker can take in the astounding panoramic views of the distant ranges. There is a pebble beach at the base which offers the perfect setting for a picnic lunch.
For those of you looking to rent a boat there is a marina within 5 miles away where you can rent a boat. A boat can be rented and brought right up to our dock for your stay.
Although you feel you are away from it all the town of Greenville Maine is just 20 miles away where you will find a quaint general store, restaurants, tackle shops, boat rental marinas, ice cream shops and an old fashioned candy store and gift shop. There is also a convenience store and restaurant with great pizza and burgers etc.. just a couple miles away.
Ask us about coordinating a private guide for hunting and fishing, planning a 'foodie long-weekend' with one of Portland Maine's classically trained chefs or a private yoga retreat.
This is not a place to have a wild party. If you are looking for a mellow retreat this is perfect. There is an age limit on renters for this reason. This camp is a place for our family to get away as well and we are looking for responsible parties who will respect the property and neighbors.
*** Main camp is not for rent in the winter months. Side camp with kitchen and two bunk houses will be available all heated but call about availabilty.
My husband and I grew up in Connecticut and moved to Maine in 2000. We live right outside of the city of Portland. Moosehead Lake was one of the first places we traveled to during our first summer here and we fell in love. What an amazing place to have only 3 hours away from home.
From our first trip to the lake we have always dreamed about buying a family compound on the water. Every year as we travel to different Lakes we always look at what is available to purchase. We have a lot of family so ultimately thought that finding a family compound would be ideal. We continued to look for over 10 years but we are very picky and wanted the right place and the perfect spot.
When we found this property we new it was rare. So private, on the lake and a perfect place to invite family where everyone could have their own sleeping quarters.
kathryn townsend purchased this lodge in 2013
Moosehead is a very special place. The Lake is the perfect location for people looking for a unique outdoor experience. The region is often referred to as 'God's Country' by locals.
Moosehead is largest lake east of the Mississippi contained in one state. A home to nature lovers looking for a secluded getaway. There a so many activities to keep you busy year round ranging from fishing, hunting, camping, white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, exploring, skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, sailing, photography, viewing wildlife or just taking in the natural beauty of the region.
This camp is the perfect place for our two boys to spend their summer. During the day we fish, swim, take drives to go moose hunting or the camps are also within 20 miles of the quaint town of Greenville, Maine which has many restaurants, shops and a local hospital. The boys love the vintage candy store and getting ice-cream.
At night we love to cook so we bbq outside, sit on the dock and fish or read a good book by the fire.
Although, we are nature lovers we also love our modern amenities and Deer Lodge has the perfect balance between nature and convenience.
We offer internet and a flat screen tv to hook up to computer/netflix for those that need/want it.
We loved the camp. It was both quaint and comfortable. The setting was gorgeous, really stunning. Even tough there are camps adjacent, we felt completely secluded. Would definitely like return.
If you are anything like me and have an inner-Boy Scout, Rockwood Lodge will not disappoint. Think Next Gen Boy Scout though. Our 'cabin' was retro-fitted to make you feel like you are playing the part, only it also comes with things like a fireplace, full bath, fridge, and a fire pit right out the back door. And that was only one of the camps. So dreamy. The main camp is open and welcoming with views all around you. It is the perfect balance of spacious and cozy. The owners were incredibly cool and resourceful with loads of information about the property, the sights and the local fun. Truly special spot that is not to be missed.
This property is phenomenal. The cabins are well maintained and very comfortable. It's a unique property with several cabins so everyone has their own space if you go with more than one family. The lake is pristine and incredibly beautiful. We had a fantastic week here.
We gather from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston for a week-long 80th birthday celebration for my father in-law. The dirt road is long, so you know the property is private. Each turn you leave your busy life behind and begin to exhale and take in the clean air. You have now entered Deer Lodge land and see a most welcoming meandering pathway of rocks and plants marking off the 5 separate buildings on this truly one of a kind property.
Kathryn and Christian have turned the original boys camp from the 1900s into a home compound worthy of the set "On Golden Pond" or "Northern Exposure". The kitchen is stocked for any type of chef - gourmet to grill master. We claimed "kid land" as the building with a large flat tv (no cable) and a bookcase full of games and DVDs which they could occupy as the adults had wine in the main lodge. Deer Lodge is a place where everyone has their own experiences. A grandfather reading his book, a son creating lego space ships, and a niece on her laptop updating her virtual world game. Yes, there is wifi.
Here are a few things we did during the week: Rent a boat from The Birches and drive 10 minutes across the lake from Deer Lodge to Mount Kineo for a hike. Pack a picnic and walk 20 minutes into the forest to see Moxie Falls. Contact Moxie Outdoor and take a 1/2 day duckie (kayak) down the lower Kennebec River. It was perfect for our entire family as we floated for 2 hours with a gentle current. Adventure seekers don't miss doing a full day of white water rafting. Visit the cute town of Greenville and don't miss The Moosehead Historical Society. The docents dressed in period costume and explain the rich history of Greenville along with the gossip. It's a small home, so would suggest leaving the kids behind. It received distinction as one of the finest small town museums in the country.
Communication was top-notch before, during, and after our stay, as both owners helped to create a magical week in Moosehead. They were so generous with their time and knowledge. I never felt rushed when I kept asking just one more question from Los Angeles. This is more than a rental, this is their special family place and we feel honored to be able to spend time in this wonderful home. If I could rate this with 10 stars I would! Thank you Kathryn and Christian for making this a week my family will never ever forget.
