Great location – Property in bad shape

My two sons invited my wife and me to spend three days together at this property. We were truly impressed when we saw the size and location of this property, as well as the amenities and pictures posted here; so we anticipated a great time with the family.

Well… we had a great time with the family in spite of the many disappointments about the property. The first impression was that the house has not been cleaned and much less inspected before our arrival: missing light bulbs, clogged sink, pubic hair in bathtub, thick grease in the oven, dirty baseboards in bathroom, dirty towels, etc. (You can read comments from other travelers here about some other inconveniences).

We arrived also excited about the advertised amenities: there was a pool table… with a torn cloth and broken sticks; there was a roulette table… without the roulette wheel!

My advice: beware, it’s not like it looks in the pictures! It’s a shame that the owner let this property decay for lack of cleaning and attention.

Exactly what we needed for a relaxing and fun weekend with the guys

We were looking for a secluded place to get the guys together for a fun weekend and this place fit the bill. The weather was beautiful in late February. There was a cool desert iguana on the rocks by the grill.

The good points are a big, well stocked kitchen with a big fridge, plenty of dining and TV/movie watching seating for a group of up to 12 people, lots of extra floor space and closets for extra people to sleep in, great views, secluded area, hot tub, and cool rocks to hang out on for sunset.

The bad points included a leaking sink in the hall bath (Danny says he's going to get it fixed ASAP), some stains on the sofas and rugs, a bunch of broken vertical blinds stored in some closets, and being within the view of the security cameras in all of the outside areas.

I'll also have to admit, throughout our stay, I was concerned about the stern warnings in the rental contract about the many ways to lose your $750 security deposit. Rules include a maximum of 8 cars parked in the driveway, maximum of 12 guests ($29 per night for each additional), in after 4 pm, out by 11 am, take your trash with you, and no fire pits. Scanning the reviews, I can't see anyone complaining about their deposit being kept unfairly, and Danny refunded my deposit relatively quickly (2 weeks) after our stay. He also refunded the extra money we paid for additional guests beyond 12 when a couple of friends had to cancel.

Things that could be improved about the place include better instructions for the operation of the surround sound system (we could only get the rear speakers working), it would be great if there were curtains you could close in front of the big windows so you can see the TV in the daytime or just block the sun that comes through very intensely, and the place needs a deep cleaning (windows, carpets, furniture).

To get the most out of your trip, I would recommend bringing your own large trash can, recycling bin, and some heavy contractor bags as you'll need to pack out your trash. I wasn't sure the landfill in Landers was open on Sunday, so we brought trash home to throw away. Bring your own paper towels, extra TP, and some basic cleaning supplies.

We had a great time!

The Desert Palace was the perfect spot for a larger get together. The owner/manager, Danny, was very professional and easy to deal with and the location was beyond our expectations. It really is located in a very special spot among the unique rocks of the Joshua Tree region. The only small "critique" I might have is that the house was a little dirty upon initial arrival, but what can you expect from a place that is literally in the middle of the desert dirt. We quickly forgot about that anyways and simply had a good time! We would definitely come back again!

Classic Style Vacation

Nice property. The surrounding rocks and location gave us the "wow factor". Stayed here and another property in the area that the owner owned. Very relaxing and stress free experience.

Perfect in Every Way

Can I just say, WOW! This property was absolutely gorgeous! We wanted to stay in a place that was close enough to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs for much needed hiking and relaxing. This house and its location were perfect. Nothing beats sitting in the Jacuzzi in the backyard, surrounded by the massive boulders and amazing pink sunsets after a long day of trails and photography.

To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to rent after I read the one star review, but let me reassure you that there was NO evidence at all of what the reviewer stated. The property was in perfect shape and we had no problems at all. Danny was more than helpful in every aspect, answering all of our questions and concerns and even hooked us up with an awesome taxi service to bring us to Palm Springs for the late nights of gambling and bars. We are already planning our next trip later this summer! Just a tip, go midweek and the rates are lower. This home is now our official desert getaway.

Beautiful location, disappointing over all

Well I would have to say the home is in a beautiful property. We stayed there over Christmas and had MANY problems, as in, dingy sheets, stained pillows and towels, bath tub jets DID not work on ANY of the tubs, a couple beds had 2x4 pieces of wood instead of box springs, no clean sponge, no access to a broom or vacuum, no dish washer detergent, carpet was dirty, coffee left in coffee maker, and on top of all that a pipe burst inside the wall in the downstairs bathroom , flooding the floors. Oh and those amazing windows to overlook the incredible view, filthy dirty.

When you spend THOUSANDS of DOLLARS, you at least expect it to be clean!!! We complained in an email, ( which is the ONLY way to contact anybody, even for the emergency flood, which they did respond quickly too... after they finally believed that towels wouldn't solver the problem) listing these problems with NO ATTEMPT to make it right... oh wait, he did add a 2x4 in a bed, which just made a different sink hole in the mattress.

The sheets on that bed, were worn and pilled with other people's hair in it. We rewashed the sheets thinking they weren't washed, they most likely were, they were just OLDER than anything I would ever keep in my house.

No mattress pads on any bed, and no towel bars or hooks in most of the bathrooms.

So very very disappointing, will be much less likely to rent a " home away" again.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that the renter had an ill experience at our estate. Properties are subject to wear and tear, and this renter had the unfavorable event of an unforeseen pipe burst. We have always provided our personal phone number to contact us with any questions or concerns. Email has never been our only way of contact. We answer emails as quick as we can, but during the holiday season, we prioritize phone calls first, as it is the busiest time of the year for any family. Unfortunately, this renter did not contact us via phone, but through email. We would have been able to resolve problems a lot quicker if we were given a phone call. As no professional technician was available during those holiday dates, we went out of our way and personally attempted to solve the issues despite our own family plans, to the best of our ability. Upon addressing the issues, the renter remarked their appreciation and satisfaction. We can assure future renters that the property is clean and up to rental standards with access to plenty of cleaning supplies. The renter stayed for over a week which might contribute to the illusion that the property was not clean. We can offer additional maid service during a renter’s stay if needed. We could assure you that in the rare unfortunate event that something is in non-working order, that we will respond and do everything possible to repair and fix the issue.
