Welcome to our mountain cabin! The perfect spot for a peaceful vacation with family, a romantic engagement, a festive retreat with friends, or just because you deserve to get away from it all. With easy access from I-80 along a private country road, the Fool's Gold Cabin is just over two hours from the Bay Area. With Sugar Bowl only 35 minutes away, fifty mountain lakes nearby and plenty of things to do at the cabin, there are endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Situated above the snow line at an elevation of 5,000 feet, there is a beautiful mix of deciduous and evergreen trees and not a neighbor in site. If you're looking for peace and privacy, this is the place for you. With a large common space inside, two bedrooms and one bathroom, the two-story 1,100 square foot cabin is ideal for a family - or 2-3 couples - to get away and relax! The cabin has contemporary furnishings and every room has charming wood floors that were made of reclaimed bleachers from the San Francisco State University basketball arena (compliments of the Wooden Duck in Berkeley). Enjoy a good book while relaxing on a leather couch with a fire raging in the large, stone fireplace with an old-school Lopi wood-burning insert (firewood provided). With 60GB of music on the iPod provided - or on the device you bring - you can easily rock out to the indoor and outdoor sound system.
There is an upstairs bedroom with a California King bed and a downstairs bedroom with two bunk beds (so, four twin beds). While the cabin sleeps 6 most comfortably, there are cots and sleeping mats available for more flexible arrangements. Bedding is provided (sheets, towels and extra pillows too). There is also a hi-end, large capacity washer and dryer (with hypo-allegnic settings too!).
The Fool's Gold Cabin has a well-equipped kitchen with plenty of seating at the bar, on the deck, or at the hand-crafted dining table - which features a topographical map of the wilderness area surrounding the cabin. There is ample room in the stainless steel refridgerator and pantry for all the groceries you bring. The Serra Market in Colfax is the nearest full-scale grocery store, but there are also some wonderful Mom-and-Pop markets in nearby historic Dutch Flat or in Alta for some of the more basic needs. With the 5-burner, 40' stainless steel stove and oven (including a convection oven that I don't know how to use), you can prepare a wonderful meal that can be enjoyed on the spacious deck with teak furniture. We provide some collapsable camping chairs in the winter when the furniture is in storage. There are too many appliances to list (microwave, toaster, Soda Stream, etc) but the kitchen is well-equipped for most every need. There are even home-made S'more Sticks so you can sit around the campfire at night and enjoy the clear, mountain sky. What's the point of nature if you don't have s'mores?
The Fool's Gold Cabin offers plenty of outdoor activity as well. In addition to the multitude of activities and events that are available in the area, our ten acre back yard has wonderful trails through scenic, private woods. There is plenty of open space for kids to run and play while you enjoy the views from a spacious deck. There's lots of fun for small kids, big kids and adults who want to act like kids.
SOMETIMES, YOU DESERVE YOUR OWN TEN-ACRE MOUNTAIN ESTATE.
If you like to be away from noisy crowds, see the night sky clearly, play in private woods, converse around campfires and dine against the backdrop of the Sierra... the Fool's Gold Cabin is the place for you!
We have three kids and live in the Bay Area. TJ is an ex-architect who now works in technology operations while Siobhan is a speech therapist. Together, we have spent the last two years renovating this cabin so that we can enjoy time together as a family. This has been our labor of love and it shows in all the warm, comfortable and hand-crafted details in the cabin. Our mission is simple: we want to you to enjoy our family getaway as much as we do!
Tj and Siobhan purchased this house in 2011
We love the space and freedom of the outdoors as a family. Several times, we stayed in a few of the old Forest Fire Lookouts that are available through recreation.gov as campsites. We purchased this property because it reminded us of those wonderful experiences: the comfort of a warm, secure home within the beautiful setting of an outdoor, mountain campsite. There is nothing like sitting by a campfire at night under the brilliant clarity of stars in a dark sky, then coming inside to a hot shower, glowing fire and all the amenities of a well-equipped cabin.
There are literally hundreds of houses that are available in the Tahoe area. All the great activities that attract folks to this region are easily accessible from our place too. What makes the Fool's Gold Cabin truly unique is the sense of privacy, seclusion and serenity - despite being so easily accessible - that this ten-acre property offers. We love the feeling when we're here that you don't have to be anywhere else. This is a magical place where time loses some of its urgency and our otherwise hectic lives find some peace and tranquility.
Fool's Gold Cabin is a beautiful cabin with everything you need plus more to enjoy a quiet and peaceful getaway. My little family (husband, son, two dogs, and me) stayed for 5 nights and not once did we get bored! We were thoroughly entertained by the beautiful 10 acres, swings, tree house, board games, and AMAZING music sound system provided through out the house. The hosts, Tj and Siobhan, are so considerate and thoughtful (they even had baby gate and baby crib ready for us when we arrived!). Tj and Siobhan made the whole booking process easy and are very helpful with any questions you have about the area or property. I hope we can return to Fool's Gold Cabin at least once a year.
My husband and I took our teenage daughter, her friend, and our three dogs to Fool's Gold for a three day snow weekend. We were so pleased with the location, the property and the cabin! It's not far from the main roads, but you feel like you're all alone in the woods. The cabin has a nice open space for family time and separate bedrooms for quiet time. You can see the snow covered mountain tops from the back of the house through the trees. We played in the snow with the dogs and let them run free. In the evenings, we snuggled by the wood stove, made s'mores, played family games! We will certainly be going back. Maybe in the spring or summer so we can explore the property more without the snow.
The owners were wonderfully accommodating in allowing us to check in early and out a little later. Their home is lovely and they were very gracious and responsive.
Thank you for a great trip and some awesome memories:)
All I can say is wow! Great location, beautiful and cozy cabin, and extremely accommodating! I was so pleased with the cabin as soon as I drove up. Perfect for adult seclusion, and family fun! Thank you for a great experience.
Our second stay at Fools Gold Cabin was just as lovely as our first one. The cabin is the perfect family get away to enjoy peaceful, non-interrupted time with your family. The house being set back so far on the property and the property having so many acres of usable land makes it the perfect place to settle in and feel like you really do not need to go anywhere else if you do not want to. We love the trail down to the railroad tracks for both hiking and sledding. Being able to watch our kids and dog plat out in the snow from the kitchen or living room windows was so nice. If you do want to get away it is an easy, short drive to down hill, or cross country skiing.
The owners have been wonderful to work with. Very accommodating, responsive to emails and kind. They obviously take great pride in their home which is apparent from the outside of the property and all throughout the house. I would recommend the cabin to any of my family or friends and hope to go back next year with my family.
This is a great 'cabin' - and exactly what we were looking for, well furnished with attentive owners who wanted us to enjoy ourselves. One concern in booking anywhere in the area is the limited amount of private property in the region that is far from I-80 (and away from traffic noise). The cabin is several miles away from I-80, so it is extremely quiet, and there is no highway noise at all! Definitely rent this place if it is available.
We came up from the Bay Area with our two toddlers and two dogs for a weekend away, and it was perfect! Lots of space to play and explore, every detail exceeded expectations. We hiked nearby trails, meandering our way home through quaint mountain towns. My husband kept saying, 'If we owned our own cabin, this is exactly what I would have done...' Happy, exhausted kids and pups fell asleep early each night, giving us time for wine in front of a romantic fire :)
This cabin greatly surpassed any expectations!!!! It is wonderfully decorated with a cozy, rustic ambiance. Easy to get to but nicely tucked away where you feel secluded. Loved the patio, sound system, comfortable bed, bedroom skylight, pet friendly option, and how well equipped every room was. There are so many hiking trails and lakes within a short distance that you would never have to hike a trail twice. We really can't say enough about this cabin & are hoping to go back soon to show off this gem to friends and family.
The area around the cabin was the site of the most prolific gold mining activity during the 1800's. It's historic sites offer museums, Malakoff Diggins State Park and charming historical districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley for shopping and antiquing.
The region offers great skiing, hiking, wineries, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, golf, tennis, sailing, fishing and more. There are cultural / musical festivals all year long at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and during the winter season, Grass Valley hosts Cornish Christmas and Nevada City offers Victorian Christmas festivals. Truckee offers a Brew Fest, Renaissance Faire, Rodeo and other fun events.
