About Tj and Siobhan
We have three kids and live in the Bay Area. TJ is an ex-architect who now works in technology operations while Siobhan is a speech therapist. Together, we have spent the last two years renovating this cabin so that we can enjoy time together as a family. This has been our labor of love and it shows in all the warm, comfortable and hand-crafted details in the cabin. Our mission is simple: we want to you to enjoy our family getaway as much as we do!
Tj and Siobhan purchased this House in 2011
Why Tj and Siobhan chose Alta
We love the space and freedom of the outdoors as a family. Several times, we stayed in a few of the old Forest Fire Lookouts that are available through as campsites. We purchased this property because it reminded us of those wonderful experiences: the comfort of a warm, secure home within the beautiful setting of an outdoor, mountain campsite. There is nothing like sitting by a campfire at night under the brilliant clarity of stars in a dark sky, then coming inside to a hot shower, glowing fire and all the amenities of a well-equipped cabin.
What makes this House unique
There are literally hundreds of houses that are available in the Tahoe area. All the great activities that attract folks to this region are easily accessible from our place too. What makes the Fool's Gold Cabin truly unique is the sense of privacy, seclusion and serenity - despite being so easily accessible - that this ten-acre property offers. We love the feeling when we're here that you don't have to be anywhere else. This is a magical place where time loses some of its urgency and our otherwise hectic lives find some peace and tranquility.

This was our first time in the area, and we were visiting family. What a pleasure this cabin was! The open layout downstairs and the large deck gave us plenty of room. Bedrooms were quite comfortable. The cabin was well-stocked with games (both indoor and outdoor). The wooded 10 acres was beautiful for walks and a late-night campfire. Everything was clean and check in was a breeze. Owners responded promptly to all our questions. We would definitely visit again.
We love the walks and campfires too! It’s the best of both camping and staying at a comfortable place. So glad you enjoyed your first visit.
Beautiful remote cabin. Perfect open floor plan with great kitchen, dining area and sitting area. Houses stayed the perfect temperature with no AC necessary even on the hottest of days we were there in July. Hosts were extremely courteous and attentive.
This is our second time there.. This is a little hidden gem. Can't wait to do it again. Plus the owners are great to deal with! Thanks again guys... Jim and Rachel
Well-maintained and comfortable with a spacious deck and quiet surroundings.
Peaceful, isolated retreat
We loved staying here! The home was comfortable and spacious, with a well-stocked kitchen and lots of games/toys for everyone. The master bedroom upstairs was like its own little treehouse and we really loved the skylight up there. The property was beautiful with lots of trails to explore. The big grassy area also sets it apart from other properties, as it gives space for games and for little ones to run around freely. For being a short distance from the freeway, it had a great tucked-away feeling. The only sounds we heard were horses in the distance, the wind and birds, and the occasional train whistle. We made use of the sporting equipment, too, and the ipod for blasting music out onto the deck. We feel like we found a real gem and definitely plan to return.
Great Private Cabin
Great private place for a family or small group. If you're looking for a low key spot to relax and hang outdoors (during the summer) Fool's Gold fits the bill perfectly. The outdoor speaker system is essential and provides great sound, even at the firepit. The big yard was clean and perfect for games. Good spot for meteor shower watching too if you plan ahead. Can get toasty on the deck during the day, would recommend bringing canopies or more patio umbrellas. We did luckily, and worked out well.
The area around the cabin was the site of the most prolific gold mining activity during the 1800's. It's historic sites offer museums, Malakoff Diggins State Park and charming historical districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley for shopping and antiquing.
The region offers great skiing, hiking, wineries, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, golf, tennis, sailing, fishing and more. There are cultural / musical festivals all year long at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and during the winter season, Grass Valley hosts Cornish Christmas and Nevada City offers Victorian Christmas festivals. Truckee offers a Brew Fest, Renaissance Faire, Rodeo and other fun events.
