Welcome to our mountain cabin! The perfect spot for a peaceful vacation with family, a romantic engagement, a festive retreat with friends, or just because you deserve to get away from it all. With easy access from I-80 along a private country road, the Fool's Gold Cabin is just over two hours from the Bay Area. With Sugar Bowl only 35 minutes away, fifty mountain lakes nearby and plenty of things to do at the cabin, there are endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Situated above the snow line at an elevation of 5,000 feet, there is a beautiful mix of deciduous and evergreen trees and not a neighbor in site. If you're looking for peace and privacy, this is the place for you. With a large common space inside, two bedrooms and one bathroom, the two-story 1,100 square foot cabin is ideal for a family - or 2-3 couples - to get away and relax! The cabin has contemporary furnishings and every room has charming wood floors that were made of reclaimed bleachers from the San Francisco State University basketball arena (compliments of the Wooden Duck in Berkeley). Enjoy a good book while relaxing on a leather couch with a fire raging in the large, stone fireplace with an old-school Lopi wood-burning insert (firewood provided). With 60GB of music on the iPod provided - or on the device you bring - you can easily rock out to the indoor and outdoor sound system.
There is an upstairs bedroom with a California King bed and a downstairs bedroom with two bunk beds (so, four twin beds). While the cabin sleeps 6 most comfortably, there are cots and sleeping mats available for more flexible arrangements. Bedding is provided (sheets, towels and extra pillows too). There is also a hi-end, large capacity washer and dryer (with hypo-allergenic settings too!).
The Fool's Gold Cabin has a well-equipped kitchen with plenty of seating at the bar, on the deck, or at the hand-crafted dining table - which features a topographical map of the wilderness area surrounding the cabin. There is ample room in the stainless steel refrigerator and pantry for all the groceries you bring. The Serra Market in Colfax is the nearest full-scale grocery store, but there are also some wonderful Mom-and-Pop markets in nearby historic Dutch Flat or in Alta for some of the more basic needs. With the 5-burner, 40' stainless steel stove and oven (including a convection oven that I don't know how to use), you can prepare a wonderful meal that can be enjoyed on the spacious deck with teak furniture. We provide some collapsible camping chairs in the winter when the furniture is in storage. There are too many appliances to list (microwave, toaster, Soda Stream, etc) but the kitchen is well-equipped for most every need. There are even home-made S'more Sticks so you can sit around the campfire at night and enjoy the clear, mountain sky. What's the point of nature if you don't have s'mores?
The Fool's Gold Cabin offers plenty of outdoor activity as well. In addition to the multitude of activities and events that are available in the area, our ten acre back yard has wonderful trails through scenic, private woods. There is plenty of open space for kids to run and play while you enjoy the views from a spacious deck. There's lots of fun for small kids, big kids and adults who want to act like kids.
SOMETIMES, YOU DESERVE YOUR OWN TEN-ACRE MOUNTAIN ESTATE.
If you like to be away from noisy crowds, see the night sky clearly, play in private woods, converse around campfires and dine against the backdrop of the Sierra... the Fool's Gold Cabin is the place for you!
We have three kids and live in the Bay Area. TJ is an ex-architect who now works in technology operations while Siobhan is a speech therapist. Together, we have spent the last two years renovating this cabin so that we can enjoy time together as a family. This has been our labor of love and it shows in all the warm, comfortable and hand-crafted details in the cabin. Our mission is simple: we want to you to enjoy our family getaway as much as we do!
Tj and Siobhan purchased this house in 2011
We love the space and freedom of the outdoors as a family. Several times, we stayed in a few of the old Forest Fire Lookouts that are available through as campsites. We purchased this property because it reminded us of those wonderful experiences: the comfort of a warm, secure home within the beautiful setting of an outdoor, mountain campsite. There is nothing like sitting by a campfire at night under the brilliant clarity of stars in a dark sky, then coming inside to a hot shower, glowing fire and all the amenities of a well-equipped cabin.
There are literally hundreds of houses that are available in the Tahoe area. All the great activities that attract folks to this region are easily accessible from our place too. What makes the Fool's Gold Cabin truly unique is the sense of privacy, seclusion and serenity - despite being so easily accessible - that this ten-acre property offers. We love the feeling when we're here that you don't have to be anywhere else. This is a magical place where time loses some of its urgency and our otherwise hectic lives find some peace and tranquility.
Fool's Gold Cabin is a beautiful cabin with everything you need plus more to enjoy a quiet and peaceful getaway. My little family (husband, son, two dogs, and me) stayed for 5 nights and not once did we get bored! We were thoroughly entertained by the beautiful 10 acres, swings, tree house, board games, and AMAZING music sound system provided through out the house. The hosts, Tj and Siobhan, are so considerate and thoughtful (they even had baby gate and baby crib ready for us when we arrived!). Tj and Siobhan made the whole booking process easy and are very helpful with any questions you have about the area or property. I hope we can return to Fool's Gold Cabin at least once a year.
My buddies and I were able to enjoy "Fools Gold" as our base camp for our 13th annual "Mancation" snowshoe trip. This place is perfect for a getaway with friends- several in our group have also expressed an interest in returning with our wives and kids to share this special place with them. The cabin is well supplied to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. It was great to unplug- no TV, no phones, no neighbors. For our first day of snowshoe adventures, we headed up the hill to Norden to hit some of our favorite spots from past Mancation trips- it was an easy drive. The next day, we stayed on the Fools Gold property to snowshoe and do some sledding, too. The cabin was a delightful place to rest after a full day of playing. Making meals was a snap- the kitchen had everything we needed. Evenings were a blast- the big table with the topographical map top was perfect for poker, Mille Bornes, Dominos, and even ping pong. The 80GB iPod has a little bit of everything- we took turns being "DJ", and we never ended up using our own music. The built-in sound system with outdoor speakers rocked it. Even though there were a couple minor issues that came up with the property, Fools Gold still gets 5 stars, all due to how TJ attentively handled the situation. Our needs were well accommodated for.
Our family had a wonderful time at this lovely cabin. It comes stocked with most of your needs. The 10 acres were wonderful to wander around on, and the kids enjoyed the tree house and tire swing on site. Although we had a few minor hiccups the property owners were on top of it and handled it professionally. We look forward to coming back.
We had a 3 day stay at this hidden treasure and was our introduction taking our 3 year old twins int he snow land. Tj and Shioban were great in responses and letting us know about the cabin before our date of arrival. There is great information on their site. The cabin itself is a wonder on it's own and we made wonderful memories of our time them. Snowball fights, snowman and sledding all checked. The cabin is well equipped for all you can think of and more. Thank you again for this great time in our lives and look forward to coming back inthe summer to explore the surroundings.
The Fools Gold Cabin is flawless. It comes equipped with everything one needs to optimize fun & relaxation.
The interior has many unique qualities including; cool flooring, a fun dining table, awesome fireplace, great mountain decor, and a pantry full of games and toys for all ages. Our 7 year old son loved it. The house is warm and inviting with an open floorpan. The kitchen came fully prepared with all tools one would need to make a superb homemade meal. We loved it.
The exterior was even better. You have 10 acres of wilderness seclusion with tons of hiking and snow play. We were able to sled, build snowmen, and have snowball fights in the yard adjacent to the house. We were here for four days and never left the property. Other seasonal activities include a tree house, horseshoes, fire pit, and an awesome patio with an amazing view.
We really enjoyed our time at the cabin. We are looking forward to returning as soon as possible!
The property is beautiful, we spent four days at the cabin and never left. The hiking and snow play, coupled with the inviting feeling of the cabin and wood burning stove is a perfect hideaway for a family. My husband, three children and myself were all able to disconnect from electronics for the entire time without any complaints from the children.
The drive to the cabin is very easy and if needed there are stores close by as well as cross country skiing, and sledding a short distance away, although the sledding on the property is also quite fun. The owners were very accommodating and kind. It is clear by how well kept the house is that they take pride in the cabin.
We would highly recommend time away at Fools gold Cabin in Alta, CA.
Clean, very stylish and comfortable, private, well-stocked (and there are even more coffee filters now....). Everything worked great! Amazing stars. Thanks for letting me borrow your home!
The area around the cabin was the site of the most prolific gold mining activity during the 1800's. It's historic sites offer museums, Malakoff Diggins State Park and charming historical districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley for shopping and antiquing.
The region offers great skiing, hiking, wineries, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, golf, tennis, sailing, fishing and more. There are cultural / musical festivals all year long at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and during the winter season, Grass Valley hosts Cornish Christmas and Nevada City offers Victorian Christmas festivals. Truckee offers a Brew Fest, Renaissance Faire, Rodeo and other fun events.
