Unique, Immaculate, Well-Equipped and Contemporary Cabin with Old School Charm!
[County of Placer Transient Occupancy Registration Certificate #8726]
Welcome to our mountain cabin! The perfect spot for a peaceful vacation with family, a romantic engagement, a festive retreat with friends, or just because you deserve to get away from it all. With easy access from I-80 along a private country road, the Fool's Gold Cabin is just over two hours from the Bay Area. With Sugar Bowl only 35 minutes away, fifty mountain lakes nearby and plenty of things to do at the cabin, there are endless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Situated above the snow line at an elevation of 5,000 feet, there is a beautiful mix of deciduous and evergreen trees and not a neighbor in site. If you're looking for peace and privacy, this is the place for you. With a large common space inside, two bedrooms and one bathroom, the two-story 1,100 square foot cabin is ideal for a family - or 2-3 couples - to get away and relax! The cabin has contemporary furnishings and every room has charming wood floors that were made of reclaimed bleachers from the San Francisco State University basketball arena (compliments of the Wooden Duck in Berkeley). Enjoy a good book while relaxing on a leather couch with a fire raging in the large, stone fireplace with an old-school Lopi wood-burning insert (firewood provided). With 60GB of music on the iPod provided - or on the device you bring - you can easily rock out to the indoor and outdoor sound system.
There is an upstairs bedroom with a California King bed and a downstairs bedroom with two bunk beds (so, four twin beds). While the cabin sleeps 6 most comfortably, there are cots and sleeping mats available for more flexible arrangements. Bedding is provided (sheets, towels and extra pillows too). There is also a hi-end, large capacity washer and dryer (with hypo-allergenic settings too!).
The Fool's Gold Cabin has a well-equipped kitchen with plenty of seating at the bar, on the deck, or at the hand-crafted dining table - which features a topographical map of the wilderness area surrounding the cabin. There is ample room in the stainless steel refrigerator and pantry for all the groceries you bring. The Serra Market in Colfax is the nearest full-scale grocery store, but there are also some wonderful Mom-and-Pop markets in nearby historic Dutch Flat or in Alta for some of the more basic needs. With the 5-burner, 40' stainless steel stove and oven (including a convection oven that I don't know how to use), you can prepare a wonderful meal that can be enjoyed on the spacious deck with teak furniture. We provide some collapsible camping chairs in the winter when the furniture is in storage. There are too many appliances to list (microwave, toaster, etc) but the kitchen is well-equipped for most every need. There are even home-made S'more Sticks so you can sit around the campfire at night and enjoy the clear, mountain sky. What's the point of nature if you don't have s'mores?
The Fool's Gold Cabin offers plenty of outdoor activity as well. In addition to the multitude of activities and events that are available in the area, our ten acre back yard has wonderful trails through scenic, private woods. There is plenty of open space for kids to run and play while you enjoy the views from a spacious deck. There's lots of fun for small kids, big kids and adults who want to act like kids.
SOMETIMES, YOU DESERVE YOUR OWN TEN-ACRE MOUNTAIN ESTATE.
If you like to be away from noisy crowds, see the night sky clearly, play in private woods, converse around campfires and dine against the backdrop of the Sierra... the Fool's Gold Cabin is the place for you!
Note: We are a registered rental property and abide by all local laws. There is an 8% occupancy tax that reflected in your total cost for room related fees and services (i.e. room charge, cleaning and our hosting fees). About Tj and Siobhan
We have three kids and live in the Bay Area. TJ is an ex-architect who now works in technology operations while Siobhan is a speech therapist. Together, we have spent the last two years renovating this cabin so that we can enjoy time together as a family. This has been our labor of love and it shows in all the warm, comfortable and hand-crafted details in the cabin. Our mission is simple: we want to you to enjoy our family getaway as much as we do!
Tj and Siobhan purchased this House in 2011
Why Tj and Siobhan chose Alta
We love the space and freedom of the outdoors as a family. Several times, we stayed in a few of the old Forest Fire Lookouts that are available through as campsites. We purchased this property because it reminded us of those wonderful experiences: the comfort of a warm, secure home within the beautiful setting of an outdoor, mountain campsite. There is nothing like sitting by a campfire at night under the brilliant clarity of stars in a dark sky, then coming inside to a hot shower, glowing fire and all the amenities of a well-equipped cabin.
What makes this House unique
There are literally hundreds of houses that are available in the Tahoe area. All the great activities that attract folks to this region are easily accessible from our place too. What makes the Fool's Gold Cabin truly unique is the sense of privacy, seclusion and serenity - despite being so easily accessible - that this ten-acre property offers. We love the feeling when we're here that you don't have to be anywhere else. This is a magical place where time loses some of its urgency and our otherwise hectic lives find some peace and tranquility.

Amazing, Secluded, Beautiful and Peaceful
Our Family had a fantastic time at the Fools Gold cabin! Although there wasn't much snow, the kids were still able to do some sledding and had a blast! They also loved the tree house, the swings, the horse shoes and the ping pong. My dog was in heaven with the 10 acres to explore. The hosts, Tj and Siobhan, were fantastic and replied immediately when messaged. We truly enjoyed spending a couple days here. We hope to come back soon!
With or without snow, it is always wonderful to spend some time with family in a peaceful and playful setting like our serene cabin. Glad you had a fantastic time!
Relaxing Stay in the Woods
The Fool’s Gold Cabin was the perfect spot to enjoy several days of quiet, seclusion (great for a dog!) and exploring. The large deck at the back of the cabin made it easy to relax among the forest and beautiful spring weather and the interior was very unique and comfortable….the owners put a lot of TLC into this place! When not staying at the cabin, we explored the small communities and hiking trails scattered along this portion of the I-80 highway corridor and Old Highway 40 Scenic Bypass. We had a great lunch at the Old 40 Bar and Grill at Donner Pass Ski Resort and hiked a bit of the PCT which we accessed across the street from the restaurant. Our favorite hike in the general area was the trail off Hampshire Rocks Road that eventually leads to Loch Leven Lakes. It’s a long but scenic uphill mile-plus to the railroad crossing and there’s a beautiful cascading waterfall just before reaching the railroad. The trailhead is also a good way to access the Yuba River and enjoy a packed lunch. A tasty birthday dinner with atmosphere at the nearby Monte Vista Inn restaurant in Dutch Flat was the perfect way for us to wrap up this trip. We stayed three nights but would have easily enjoyed more.
What a beautiful property! Loved every minute of our weekend. The cabin was much bigger than we expected. My son and I enjoyed exploring the trails on the property, but we spent most of our time on the large deck listening to music and enjoying the gorgeous view. Relaxing, comfortable, well stocked, large kitchen. You couldn't possibly go wrong with this place!
Great house in an amazing location
We were so lucky to be able to stay here for a week, wish it had been longer. The house is beautiful, we cooked all our meals in the house, the kitchen had everything we needed and the modern appliances were great. Beds were comfy and the bathroom was clean and well stocked with towels. Clean and well equipped and we liked the books and local information. Our kids age 13 and 9 had a lot of fun playing outside, more than enough property for their own adventures. We ate meals on the deck and enjoyed the stars by the firepit one night. It is very centrally located for all we wanted to do, Nevada City, Empire Mine Park, Malakoff Diggins, Donner summit and the many hiking trails in the area. The rural neighborhood was great to take a walk in the evenings. The large supermarket at Colfax had all we needed for food and drink for the week. A really amazing place, such a delightful cabin for a family holiday for any ages of kids with lots of activities in the area.
Thanks for leaving some additional books on history in the area. What a great addition to the cabin for future guests. Very thoughtful!
My wife and I came up to this cabin for a winter weekend getaway hoping to be snowed in and boy did we get what we wanted. The cabin had everything we needed in terms of the kitchen and sleeping accommodations. We kept a fire going most of the weekend with the ample firewood provided and enjoyed being snowed in. It's worthwhile noting that we received plow service every morning, so if we had wanted to leave it wouldn't have been a problem. The property is huge and very private. 10/10 will definitely come stay again!
It is definitely special to wake up to fresh snow knowing that there is nobody around to step in it but you! Glad you had that experience. :-)
Peaceful and private
We enjoyed a peaceful relaxing stay in the well appointed cabin. I loved the privacy of this property. The kitchen was amazing and we were able to cook incredible meals. My kids didn't want to leave. We hope to return again.
Kids wanting to stay longer is our favorite thing to hear! There is definitely something about the space and freedom to play up there that is special.
The area around the cabin was the site of the most prolific gold mining activity during the 1800's. It's historic sites offer museums, Malakoff Diggins State Park and charming historical districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley for shopping and antiquing.
The region offers great skiing, hiking, wineries, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, golf, tennis, sailing, fishing and more. There are cultural / musical festivals all year long at the Nevada County Fairgrounds and during the winter season, Grass Valley hosts Cornish Christmas and Nevada City offers Victorian Christmas festivals. Truckee offers a Brew Fest, Renaissance Faire, Rodeo and other fun events.
