About the property

Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Natural Bridge

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin if full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

We love this cabin we have stayed twice!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd stay at this cabin because we fell in love this 1st time and decided to use it for our next red river gorge trip! If you come to the gorge/natural bridge to explore and need a cabin to rest, eat, and shower this is the one! The owner is very on top of updates. The new mattresses were much appreciated and more comfortable than our own! We noticed they added beautiful new couches and rugs! This cabin has an awesome bathroom and most of all the area outside is our favorite! We love the wrap around porch, the fire pit area, and picnic area! We treat this cabin as if it were our own! We also appreciate that this cabin is dog friendly because our dog loves to hike with us. We hope that if this cabin were to ever be sold we could jump on the opportunity to snatch it up, we love it that much!! Thank you to the owners for all the love you put into this cabin and we cant wait to come back for a 3rd time!

Cozy & secluded

  • 5 of 5

I had a short 3 day stay to get away and relax and this was the perfect place. I felt like I was away from it all, but with the conveniences I enjoy. I could choose a quiet time sitting on the porch listening to the wind in the trees or get reconnected with the WiFi or cable TV. I hope to return for a longer stay someday.

Owner's Response: Ya, that is a mighty relaxing porch. I'm in the rare book business and though I hate to admit it I often bring along a box of books or two and sit out there doing reseach with a laptop, WI fi, and the internet. Doesn't seem like work that way. John

Cabin is very nice, was very clean. The fire pit area is by far the best

  • 4 of 5

Nice, clean. To anyone visiting this area, there is a Kroger grocery store in Stanton, exit 22. Would recommend stopping there for anything. The gas station prices are unreasonable. Also, take firewood with you.

Owner's Response: The Kroger is a full service grocery. It is about 15 miles from the cabin but is on your way to Big Rock off the Mountain Parkway at Stanton, exit 22. After you exit take a left, at second stop light take a left on why 15. Kroger is 3 blocks on the left. Best place for gas but still higher than city prices.

2017 Anniversary Trip MG Midget resurrected!!!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed the firepit. The fireplace was very nice. The tub was great. Quiet and peaceful. Worry about issues with the oven because the door doesn't close properly. Great stay. Will return.

Owner's Response: Thanks for coming to Big Rock and glad you enjoyed your stay. I regret a renter right before you sprung the oven door causing it to not quite close completely. There is no issue beyond a little heat loss. We are currently waiting for a part to come in to repair it so soon we will have it back to new. Very sorry it caused you concern. John

Beautiful! Located near red river gorge activities! Amazing property and amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We thouroughly enjoyed or time at Big Rock- this unique and amazingly decorated cabin was clean and cozy with everything we needed! If you enjoy folk art, you are in for a great treat! You get an amazing view from the windows and the wrap around porch had us spending most of the daylight hours outside. As a family of three we had more sleeping space than we needed but it gave our 8 yr old a whole loft space with bathroom to herself. This place was close to all the activities in Red River Gorge, we enjoyed hiking, rock climbing and rappelling, zip lining and horsebackriding all within a 15-30min drive! The fire pit under the rock was fantastic for bonfires/s'mores and our daughter had a blast making "fairy" rooms in the side of the rock face. We found the beds comfy and linens/towels clean and plentiful. The Outdoor grill was great for cooking and the indoor fireplace, tv and board games made for great relaxing memories after our daytime adventures! john, our host, was quick to get back to us with questions on where to go/what to do and was able to help us out with letting us use laundry machines on site. I hope we will get the chance to visit again- great place to stay and a great area to explore!
