Overview

About the property

Chalet, 3 Bedrooms + Futon bed, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Starlit evenings perfect for romance. A dance floor. Stargaze from the deck. Look, there's Orion! Folks love the privacy, quiet ... no traffic noise. And breathing pure air and drinking sweet, non-chlorinated water. The chalet is a comfortable base from which adventurous families launch serious explorations of Yosemite and the Sierra. Days begin with animated fly-ins of wild doves, stellar jays, dark-eyed juncos, grosbeaks and hummingbirds who come to enjoy birdseed on our deck. Guests watch happily from comfortable chairs in the Great Room. Squirrels join the party. Sometimes, wild turkeys and gray foxes. Deer cross the meadow. After Mother Nature's morning shock and awe, the bell sounds; time to peek through another window at one of America's richest historical periods. We head for Gold Country Mariposa to enjoy the California Mining and Mineral Museum or the History Museum, visit one of our state's oldest newspapers, and tour California's oldest active courthouse. History is alive in Mariposa!

Explosion of Beauty–Everywhere:

You don't have to wait 'til you arrive at Yosemite to be captured by nature's splendor. Starlit Chalet is surrounded by mountain landscape, Ponderosa Pines, Oaks and Incense Cedars. There is a constant explosion of beauty outside every window. Put on your walking shoes, walk down the hill to the mailbox, turn right onto Jerseydale Road and walk up to the Sierra National Forest Fire Station. Drink in the trees, the meadows, the quiet, the dramatic terrain of the Chalet, the extravagant display in every direction. And, when the sun comes up again, get the birdseed from the pantry, sprinkle it generously along the deck railing and watch the joyful ballet of feathered and furried friends.

Star-gazing–Cooking Fun:

The only lights to distract at night emanate from the moon and billions of galaxies that populate a vast window to the Southern Sky. Our forest recently got a haircut to make it more healthy so, for the first time, we can see a tiny glow of lights from the B&B nearby but they don't affect the starry majesty of the heavens, all seen most nights from the redwood deck circling half the chalet. You don't need a Hubble telescope to enjoy the parade of the universe’s celestial extravagance – our star chart and binoculars will do the job just fine. The spacious kitchen includes custom cabinets and many appliances. The inviting tile bar connecting the kitchen and dining area is a great place to gather during meal preparation and cheer on the cook. And, if the cook is willing, throwing a few steaks on the barbie may be the perfect preparation for tomorrow's Yosemite hike or tonight's star party.

Dance Floor–Sandy Beaches: Your willing host, Paul, has hiked the Sierra Nevada for 20 years and can answer your questions about hiking trails. Paul also teaches Argentine tango for beginners. Se habla tango! The Great Room's comfortable seating can easily be moved to create dance space when the sun goes down. Bring your CD's and dancing shoes and enjoy your favorite dances with your favorite partner as the stars twinkle overhead. Set a romantic mood with the dimmable track lights. Feet sore from dancing all night? Relief is just 20 minutes away at Briceburg on the Merced. Cold water and sandy beaches for tired feet. A perfect place for swimming, picnics, hiking, kayaking, fishing and seeing wildlife. In May and early June, white-water rafting is available.

About Paul Weiss

Se habla español. I spend my time traveling, writing, and producing documentary videos to help make the world a better place for children. Nature and photographing it are big interests. And when I'm at the chalet, hiking twice weekly with a local hiking group. Life is good! And I take being your host very seriously. I and my professional staff spend a lot of time making sure the chalet is clean, safe, comfortable and … spectacular.

Paul Weiss purchased this chalet in 2001

Why Paul Weiss chose Yosemite Area

On my very first visit, I was stunned by the beauty of Yosemite and this entire area. That reaction continues today. This is one of the most beautiful areas on the planet and being able to share it with friends and family for so many years has given me a lot of joy. Now I get to share it with new friends, my guests. And what guests we have! From all over the world ... and all in love with nature. These are the folks who are going to save the planet!

What makes this chalet unique

Being so close to the beauty of Yosemite and the Sierra National Forest is everything! And at almost 4,000' elevation, our cooler chalet is a great plus in Mariposa's warm summers. I love to hike, enjoy good food and curl up on my favorite chair in the Great Room with a good book. Just being quiet in the presence of nature's majesty can be very healing. And being surprised by a deer or the whirring wings of a humming bird ... or looking up at night and seeing a billion stars ... all quite wonderful. And, when the mood strikes - and it often does - slipping a tango CD into the stereo and moving slowly across the dance floor as the music invades every pore of my body ... aaaaahh. What a wonderful world!

Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

The Chalet was a perfect location for my husband, daughter and I to explore Yosemite. Beautiful, quiet setting in the woods with wild turkeys, birds and squirrels. Cozy inside with comfortable beds, a great kitchen stocked with everything you need and lots of books, puzzles and local information to entertain. Thank you Paul for sharing your little slice of heaven with us!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Barbara,, for your kind words. It's guests like you that keep us motivated to make Starlit Chalet the best it can be. Our guests are a big reason we call our home "starlit" - the heavenly stars and our guest-stars both bring their special light to the chalet!

Would recommend, great experience with owner and manager, stay was foiled by heat wave and A/C issue

  • 4 of 5

The property was very tidy and neat. The size of the home was great for our party of four and would accommodate more. The owner and manager of the property was in contact with us well in advance of our arrival, making our trip to the chalet pain free, especially due to a late check-in. When we arrived to the chalet, the windows were open to allow the cool night air into the home, it was a bit warm in the house though. We turned the A/C on and unpacked and went to sleep for the night. The next day the power had gone out while we were away for the day and the house was, again, very hot inside. The power didn't return until after 8PM. Again, we had opened every window to allow the cooler, outside, air inside while waiting for the A/C unit to bring it down as well. This is when we noticed the outdoor A/C unit was not running/working.I informed the manager of the issue and we were told the matter would be dealt with first thing in the morning. Sadly, the repairs to the unit would not be made until the day of our check-out. Apparently the heat we were experiencing was wide-spread and causing issues across the state. We were reluctant to contact the owner to discuss our options, but he was generous enough to allow us to cancel our reservations for the remaining three nights if we could find accommodations elsewhere. We were able to find a room at a hotel, with A/C, and he graciously canceled the remainder of our stay and refunded us the money for those nights cancelled. We were sad to have to leave, but circumstances left us no choice, especially since a hotel room cost the same amount as the rental house for three nights. The heat wave across the state had brought the temperature inside the house up to 95 degrees during the day and made our evenings very uncomfortable and our nights restless waiting for the temperature to drop into the 80s. The mornings were very nice, in the 70s, but it would take all night to get there.

I have nothing ill to say about this property. We had a few strokes of bad luck: Heat wave, power outage, long wait on repairs, no breeze pushing cooler air into the house, etc. But, under normal circumstances, this property had everything we would have asked for. Short of having a working A/C the home was a great value and I would stay here again if I ever found myself returning to the Yosemite area.

I'd like to thank our hosts for doing everything they could in making our stay as comfortable as they could!

Owner's Response: This is what global warming and one of our rare power failures can do to our great guests! The power outage tripped a switch in our a/c and because of the same problem in many other homes, our usually quick-responding a/c service repair company could not help immediately. They finally arrived after our guests left and fixed the problem in 10 minutes!

As advertised!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful location! Paul is a gracious host. We saw him our first day and was certainly available if we needed him, but we did not see him after to the disappointment of our kids who enjoyed hearing his stories about the area. The property was clean and well maintained. The night time sky from the deck is breathtaking.

Paul's place is very comfortable and quiet. Located outside Mariposa, it is within a 1 hour drive of Yosemite. All the conveniences of home are there. Paul is a very personable and interesting person. We really enjoyed chatting with him when we arrived, and he made us feel so welcome. I would highly recommend this property.

Great place, great views and great host!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent cabin! Excellent views! We stayed for three nights. The cabin is really neat, and well maintained. The bedroom upstairs has an attached deck with really pleasant views. It felt serene to just lie in the bed and look at the view outside. The kitchen has all the pots and pans and other things you might need during your stay. So overall it was a very pleasant experience for us.

Paul is an amazing host, one of the nicest souls I have come across till date! He joined us for the cheesecake I prepared to celebrate my husband's birthday, and gifted us a book he has authored. He even agreed to pose for a quick selfie with us. Paul, we have really fond memories of our stay at your place. Thanks! We would love to go back!
